Wireless and Cellular Networks is a great climax in the other 2 books written by this author Network Administartion and Advanced Network Administration. A mixed bag
This book intends to be the de facto handbook for IMS, but it ends up being mostly reference material.

IMS - Revealed From the Inside
The 3G IMS book provides a look at IMS organization and SIP signaling from one of the people who were there while the protocols were being established.Since this is an emerging and still developing technology, the little insights like "this is what we intended to do here", and "this is where we want this eventually to go" will be emminently helpful in choosing equipment and network organizations.

scissors and paste
The author has done a good job of scouring the antenna literature and summarizing all of the equations in one place.The problem is the lack of any discussion about what the equations mean.I am reminded of the definition of a college education given by Prof. McWhorter of Stanford, "the process of the professors notes becoming the student's notes without having passed through the mind of either."
A delightful read
This is quite possibly one of the biggest books on antennas ever written.The information is presented in a clear and concise manner, and you can easily find what you need.There is all sorts of information on new antennas and the derivations for many equations are presented clearly.There is enough material to give all other books page envy, and therefore, it earns a rating of 5 stars.

Excellent
I have two standard textbooks on antennas, namely, Antenna Theory by Balanis and Antennas by Kraus (both third edition). Both are good books. But if I could keep only one book, I would definitely choose Balanis because, in my non-expert opinion, it is more coherent, more systematic, and has a stronger emphasis on principles. Balanis also comes with a helpful CD containing Powerpoint slides (tons of them), Matlab files, and a few other items. The paper quality is superb but the paper thickness makes for a tome that feels like a heavy college dictionary. The mathematics is not as scary as I originally thought, and should be okay for final year EE undergraduates. I recommend this book highly and unreservedly. ... Read more

Read "a different"book before this one.
Otherwise it might be somehow confusing. This book is a must for professionals as another reviewer stated but it is not very suitable as the first book on UMTS technologies. This book serves best as supplementary reading. For example new-beginner readers might get confused talkink about SIP at the first chapter before explaining W-CDMA and core-network layout. Anyway, this book contains wealth of information on UMTS technologies and warmly recommended for serious readers.

Useful compilation of standards, if you need them
If you like to read standards or have to in the course of your work, this book offers a useful and succinct compilation. Other than that, there is nothing to recommend this book as it does not help improve your understanding. Then again, this is not the kind of book which people who do not have to work with standards will want to read. Not for newbies, must for pros

many problems for the student
This is not really a book big on theory. Instead, its main merit is a focused, problem-based approach. For long established subjects like calculus, say, the usefulness of having extensive problem sets for a student to tackle is apparent. And thus there are indeed plenty of texts to supply those problems.

Solid class-in-a-book to help you pass your Technician's exam
This book is organized as a welcome to amateur radio, followed by chapters with course sections. At the end of each section certain exam questions are listed. You can then flip to the 392 question Element 2 exam at the end and test your knowledge. The book is good for teens through adults and is written in straightforward language with most essentials concisely introduced and explained.

Needs an update... but still a must for every RFID professional
Book provides a solid foundation for RFID physics and the fundamental concepts. It gets really boring at times because of its staright forward approach and technical jargon. There is no other book in the market that capture RFID in such a depth; however the book is requires a immediate update to incorporate EPCglobal standards and other recent developments in the RFID industry.

The best book (as others reviewed) on UMTS RN planning.
This is the best book on UMTS radio network planning. In fact it is a masterpiece. Well detailed contents, good diagrams and easy to understand plain English. Covers some theory on air interface techniques as well. Warmly recommended especially for RN planning tool designers.

This is the Best book for 3G(UMTS) radio network interface
I've read more than 5 books about UMTS air-interface. However,most of books concern only about the physical structure. They didn't tell you WHY the structure is made for. In this book, the explanation is clear and the summary table is really useful. Most of all,it tell you WHY they are made for. Only you know the SPIRIT of physical structure,you will realize the BEAUTY of 3G. I recommand this book for someone with beginning knowledge about UMTS.

Very informative , Well-presented but ....
This is one of the best books I've seen and read on 3G matters. Not recommended for those people who are not technical enough (or who hates) to go into the details of mathematical formulas. This book starts with presenting the architecture of UMTS networks and goes on to describe each of the components of a UMTS network (from user equipment up to the core network). This is a very good and serious book.
I don't agree with the previous reviewer. It is a serious book with wealth of information and it is not a marketing info book. It covers GSM basics, detailed GPRS and EDGE information and an intro on 3G technologies. GPRS and EDGE chapters particularly good and contain a lot of simulation results also. yes, some errors, but overall great text
I give this book a 5, despite the errors, because of how well it covered such a broad topic.The reviewer above mentioned the chapter on RF implementation issues, which was very good.The chapter on smart antennas is pretty good also.I think that it is included because the "software" part of a software defined radio is where beam-steering and space-diversity algorithms are implmented.It's not totally out of place and provides for some breadth.All of these VT profs (Reed, Durgin, Rappaport) tend to put out books that facilitate understanding and then, when you are ready for the underlying mathematics, they'll cite you the places to go for that.IMHO, that's a good approach- otherwise, they might as well not write books and just slap together a bunch of papers, bind 'em and call that a rigorous text.

Good book with many errors!
This book is a one-stop source for everything you need to know about Software Radio. So, this is an excellent text-book for a 1-semester course on software radio. Some of the concepts such as analog-to-digital conversion are discussed in detail, although the relevance of a 70 page chapter on smart antennas in a Software Radio book still eludes me. A good introduction to RF implementation issues is provided. There isn't too much Math in this book, which is both good and bad. My only complaint is that there are lot of errors, both conceptual and typographical, in this book and many of these errors are not addressed in the webpage maintained by the author. A good book for novices
Although it is a little bit old and there are so many other books on the subject, I still think that it is one of the bests. This book gives you a good basic knowledge of wireless circuits and systems. It's a good reference to look at too. In general, all books by BR are good, he is an incredible writer. His books are always very good to start with when you don't really know anything about the subject. As you get to know the subject more and more, you will know the value of the book and will discover more practical stuff in it. I totally recommend this one and all his books.

OK book, but buyer beware
This book covers a good deal of material in a very hot area. However, coverage is uneven with occasional mistakes. The book seems to be collected in a hurry some lecture notes. For example, the formula for the relationship between jitter and phase noise given at the beginning of the book is wrong (even units do not make sense) and is not the same for the expression given in the PLL chapter (it makes more sense).
Content seemed great, but not explained in detail
When I first bought this book, I was very hopeful. The book seemed to cover a lot of relevant material, in a concise fashion. When I tried to read it however, I found it a little bit too much on the concise side. I have read very complicated books with a lot of math before, and I could follow them easier than this "easy" writing style. Almost every subject is covered in other books in more detail and better. Sometimes it's nice to have a simpler book which is an introduction, and that is what I was hoping for, but this just didn't do it for me.I donated the book to the library,as I felt I would never really get too much out of it. This didn't stop me from buying Mr. Razavi's "Design of Analog CMOS ICs " and I liked his tutorial in the IEEE Phase Lock Loop book he edited.I know he can do a better job. ... Read more

Excellent Survey of RFID; present and future issues.
This is a compilation of papers from numerous organisations with diverse opinions on how this technology will develop.RFID presents opportunities for great improvement in business efficiencies for corporations and better service for customers and consumers.The flip side is that RFID has the potential to negatively impact individual privacy more than most technologies.

The chapters are written by different authors, concerning various aspects about RFID. The topics give an idea of the scope of RFID deployment. None of the chapters would be considered technical. You are not required to be an electrical engineer to follow any chapter.
Fast track RFID project helper
For those who want faster diving in RFID technology I would recommend to take a look at DataBrokers TagTracker. Their new version works with LF and HF transponders and uses Hibernate to store scanned data in a database. It comes with PIRF-Lite (Java written API) which allows the user to make new transponder layouts and interact with the RFID reader differently than it is shown in TagTracker. TagTracker itself is enough to collect RFID data from different locations (RFID readers) and store it in a common database. Like a data pump. Good Refernce book

Little bit disappoint
This has many typos, which can be frustrating in following the context. And I found out that the typos are different to other 2nd editions. Little bit disappointing.

A very technical book
I recommend this book for anyone pursuing a Certification like CWNA, CWNP or other wireless certifications. The technical concepts which are at the core of design, implementation, research, and invention of wireless communication systems are presented in an order that is conducive to understanding the general concepts, as well as those specific to current and evolving wireless communication systems and standards.

Lots of Cheerleading, Limited Sport
As one would expect, there's plenty of cut-and-paste terminology and mathematics from current academic engineering topics.So there's a lot of cheerleading.But missed is the opportunity to show in depth how useful theory (Signals & Systems, Control, you name it) can be in solving Wireless/Digital Communication problems.So she honestly failed to capture the actual sport of Communication theory (Wireless, Digital, or Otherwise).

Must Have Every Year!

This publication is the best shortwave radio guide that I have come across. Super reports on various shortwave radios that are on the market, giving you information which helps in selecting your next radio. Much information about different countries and their shortwave transmissions. This is a got-to-have guide.

Passport to World Band Radio, New 2006 Edition (Passport to World Band Radio)by Lawrence Magne is laid out in kind of a TV Guide format.This lends itself to finding the station or type of shortwave programming you seek quickly.Like past editions there are articles on shortwave and equipment reviews.While not as thorough as its European counterpart, the WRTH (World Radio TV Handbook) it is easier to use.I find myself referring to Passport to World Band Radio, New 2006 Edition (Passport to World Band Radio)by Lawrence Magne and WRTH on an equal basis.Both compliment each other and should be in the libraries of any Shortwave Listener. ... 5 stars without doubt
I bought this book because I needed to brush up my wireless skills for a project during this summer. I liked the table of contents; it seemed to include pretty much anything I would need. But when reading it in detail, I was even more impressed by the skill of the author in explaining the most tricky aspects of wireless systems, mixing verbal explanations, math, and examples. And the book is at just the right level to bridge the usual communications courses I had heard, and the really advanced research monographs and papers. To summarize, this is simply a great book - 5 stars without a doubt.

excellent textbook
This is a very excellent textbook for both advanced undergraduate and graduate courses. It covers almost every aspects of wireless communications without losing depth. The further reading section at the end of each chapter is very usefull to readers who want to explore more on particular topics. It is a good sumary.
