2-0 out of 5 stars scissors and paste
The author has done a good job of scouring the antenna literature and summarizing all of the equations in one place. The problem is the lack of any discussion about what the equations mean.I am reminded of the definition of a college education given by Prof. McWhorter of Stanford, "the process of the professors notes becoming the student's notes without having passed through the mind of either."
5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful read
This is quite possibly one of the biggest books on antennas ever written. The information is presented in a clear and concise manner, and you can easily find what you need. There is all sorts of information on new antennas and the derivations for many equations are presented clearly. There is enough material to give all other books page envy, and therefore, it earns a rating of 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I have two standard textbooks on antennas, namely, Antenna Theory by Balanis and Antennas by Kraus (both third edition). Both are good books. But if I could keep only one book, I would definitely choose Balanis because, in my non-expert opinion, it is more coherent, more systematic, and has a stronger emphasis on principles. Balanis also comes with a helpful CD containing Powerpoint slides (tons of them), Matlab files, and a few other items. The paper quality is superb but the paper thickness makes for a tome that feels like a heavy college dictionary. The mathematics is not as scary as I originally thought, and should be okay for final year EE undergraduates. I recommend this book highly and unreservedly. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bible for LNA design
I am a Principal RF Engineer/ Program Manager, with a graduate degree in the field of RF / Microwave and more than a decade of experience working with it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book for LNA design
I recently took an RF course that was using this book. The examples that were provided were excellent. The theory that was presented wasn't hard to follow, and if the reader was motivated enough, they can test it out using a CAD program.I myself used ADS.This is a must have book if you're going into the RF profession.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginner....Not for advanced
This book is truely for beginners who have no clue of signal Integrity. He starts this book with stuff like Ohm's law and how capacitors and inductors work which most people learn in high school.
5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the most readable book you'll find on this
Brook's book is exceptional in the clarity of the writing, esp. in explaining key concepts that most engineers are fuzzy on.This book is great at giving engineers an intuitive feel for basic electromagnetics and how it relates to signal integrity and emi.4-0 out of 5 stars A chasm has been bridged...
As an educator, lecturer and practicing designer I am given many books to read and make comment on. I find very few books that are able to bridge the chasm between the needs of a beginner learning about signal integrity and the needs of a professional desperate to solve design problems. This book is an excellent primer and reference for understanding the interrelationship between the board layout and the signal integrity problem. This book details design solutions to classic signal integrity problems and educates the novice in understanding the reasoning behind the solutions. There is a lot of nonsense being written about signal integrity and few people have the resources to filter out the chaff from hay. This book proves every principle presented with tested board layouts, demonstrated engineering principles, or documented laboratory results. Some people can see the world in formulas and some see the world pictorially. This book is rich in both forms of expressionism and its presentation will not exasperate the PCB designer who sees the world visually, or frustrate the engineer seeking equations for design representation. This book has been added to the required reading list for our PCB layout designers and product development engineering teams. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Survey of RFID; present and future issues.
This is a compilation of papers from numerous organisations with diverse opinions on how this technology will develop.RFID presents opportunities for great improvement in business efficiencies for corporations and better service for customers and consumers. The flip side is that RFID has the potential to negatively impact individual privacy more than most technologies.
4-0 out of 5 stars speculative deployments
The chapters are written by different authors, concerning various aspects about RFID. The topics give an idea of the scope of RFID deployment. None of the chapters would be considered technical. You are not required to be an electrical engineer to follow any chapter.
3-0 out of 5 stars Fast track RFID project helper
For those who want faster diving in RFID technology I would recommend to take a look at DataBrokers TagTracker. Their new version works with LF and HF transponders and uses Hibernate to store scanned data in a database. It comes with PIRF-Lite (Java written API) which allows the user to make new transponder layouts and interact with the RFID reader differently than it is shown in TagTracker. TagTracker itself is enough to collect RFID data from different locations (RFID readers) and store it in a common database. Like a data pump. All you need is to create your own interface to query the database using your preferred languages/tools , etc. ... Read more

I took a graduate course in Microwaves at ASU taught by a former student of the author for which this was the text. Overall, the book is well written and is an excellent teaching and learning tool. The problems at the end of each chapter are superb. The text provides excellent coverage of practical microwave engineering at an intermediate level.

1-0 out of 5 stars No circuit analysis at ALL
This book was used for an upper level graduate course at my university.Unfortunately, all of the homeworks used questions from this textbook, and we were not able to complete ANY of them using the analysis (or lack there of) covered in this text.We struggled to find answers in this book, but eventually found the answers using other textbooks or notes we gained from other professors and classes.
2-0 out of 5 stars Lee's disdain for rigor is antithetical to the competent practice of engineering
Professor Lee's disdain for rigorous analysis, explicitly stated in numerous places in this book, sets a poor example for his students and the engineering community.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't be deceived by the image on the cover !
With the photo of the IC die on the cover and the word Planer in the title I was concerned this would be focused on monolithic integrated circuits but it is not.Excellent coverage of the topic in a light writing style that does not avoid the technical details.A great piece of work Mr Lee.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quirky, insightful, historical, very readable...
You have to like a book that is readable (almost conversational), gives historical insight (how 50&75ohm coax became the "standard"), at times is humorous ("But wait, 30 ohms(that gives optimal power handling) does not equal 50, even for relatively large values of 30.") but does not shy away from the some more advanced but interesting (at least to me) derivations of things like estimating fringing capacitance by use of a variational method. This is an excellent book to have fun with and read for insight as a first introduction to some RF topic or to gain further insight and perspective once you have some mastery of some topic, but the level is somewhat uneven, so that for many topics you may wind up having to use a more traditional, dry standard text like Ramo's Fields and Waves if you seriously need to design something. However, this is a great text in the sense that it is unique and so well-written and interesting that if it is around your desk, you will find yourself thumbing through it when you get bored of a task at the office just to learn something new to break up the day. ... It is a real pity that this book is out of print. What I like the most about it is the use of Maxwell Equations to proof many important Antenna Theory results such as Reciprocity and the treatment of the circuit properties of antennas.
