A good book for starters
A very good starting point. Allows you space to build on what you read.

A good book for learning the Fiber Optics.
The fourth edition of this book is a product of many years of practical experience and trials of previous editions. I always wondered if more information than just reader's level as beginner, intermediate and advanced should be printed on the technical books. What you are looking for in a book and level of satisfaction depends on your involvement in that area of expertise. Please stay with me while I try my thinking on this book. If you are already an expert working in Optical Engineering field this book is not a research paper. Probably you need Warren J. Smith's book Modern Optical Engineering. If you are a student learning about Fiber Optics this book has enough information and practice questions to be qualified as a good text book, but may not be enough for your Graduate School research thesis. If you are like me, a practicing Network Engineer or technician, this book provides everything you need to know and more than enough information. It is written in an easy to understand style, and chapters are in a perfect sequence and length. That's why I am rating it 5 Stars. ... Read more

A good addition to the technical bookshelf
My company, Taliescent, makes measurement standards for fiber optic test instruments. We have recently decided to add products for the FTTH market and the first logical product would be a way to verify Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) Measurements. Since I have not dealt with OTDRs since graduate school, and I was attending the Optical Fiber Conference in Anaheim, CA I decided to go talk about our product ideas with one of the experts, Larry Johnson who is the president of The Light Brigade. His company provides live fiber optic training and makes training videos aimed at the technician and the installer market. During our conversation he mentioned that he co-authored a book on OTDRs. Figuring this would be a useful resource, I went to the Elsevier Publishers booth where they happened to have the book. I then told the booth lady that I publish an online fiber optic newsletter (ftthblog.com) and would like to review the book. So she gave me the book for free.

Response to gary Kessler
This is a response to Mr. Kessler's review.First, he needs to state that he has a biased interest in his review, that he used to work with Walter at Hill & Associates before he went to work for Juniper.Second, I was the reviewer for the first edition of the book and Walter had a lot of misconceptions about SONET in the original draft.So much so that my name is menitioned in the acknoweldgements in the first edition.Since I worked as amanager dealing with SONET at both AT&T as well as Cisco Systems,the book leaves a lot to be desired.He is very verbose in his writing style and has never worked in the field to give the reader a real understanding of the issues that come with understanding SONET - both services and equipment.There are other books in the field that do a better job - Andy Reid is a good one from the technical side for example - but this author needs to change his writing style and tone it down for this book to be considered for readership seriously.

this is not your book if you want hardcore technical details
I can recommend this book to everyone who wants to get an overview on SDH/SONET capabilities and/or products but does not care for the protocol itself. Good Book To Start Sonet Studies
This is very good book for beginners, and for those who wants to understand Sonet basics, but still it very general and lacks from some shallowness.Read more

first of a kind
This is one of the first book that covers topics related to High Speed digital design so extensively. Well written and a good reference. A must have.

A fantastic book, but not for beginners
Optical Network Design and Implementation is the most technically informative Cisco book I have ever written.So much so, that it should be required reading for any WAN engineer/architect.
Excellent book for optical network design
I work every day with fiber optic networks and didnt know anything about Cisco programming but didnt had trouble for reading this book. It is excellent for whatever you need to know or do with optical networks. Very practical and down to earth approach.

Good reference book ...
... but a really bad book to learn from.The book is not written for students; it's more like a collection of facts pasted together.On the plus side, the material is logically organized, and this makes it very easy to find what you're looking for.(Which, again, is what makes this a very good reference book).And, the book is complete: everything you need to know is there - semicond. optical amplifiers, optical receivers and transmitters, optical solitons; the whole nine yards.But if you want a learning book, look elsewhere.From the back cover: "Students and researchers alike will benefit from extensive pedagogical aids including: (1) extensive reference lists for each chapter, (2) survey of recent research material for each chapter, (3) relevant end-of-chapter practice problems ..., (4) solutions manual available to teachers on request, (5) system design software on the enclosed CD-ROM."
Good book, but many errors
Agrawal is very well regarded in the field and in general the book is solid.I am using this book for a graduate level Optical Networks class.The major issue is that there are a lot of errors in the book, especially in the problems.

I don't care for this book.
I prefer Fiber Optics Communications by Gerard Lachs.Unfortunately that book is from 1998, so it is kind of old.

One of the best book I've ever red on nonlinear optics.
I'm absolutly sure that everyone can find something useful in this book, no matter who you are - a novice in this subject or well experienced researcher in optics.
A quantitative text on nonlinear fiber optics
This is a serious book written at a graduate-student oradvanced-under-graduate level for the practicing professional employed indesigning optical telecommunications systems and components. I don't thinkthe book was written with students particularly in mind, since (forexample) there are no examples or problems in the book as typically foundin university course workIn his introduction, Agrawal says "[t]hebook is aimed for researchers already engaged in or wishing to enter thefiled of nonlinear fiber optics." A rare excellent book for Metro Ethernet
Sam Halabi did it again.This is a rare and very informative book on Metro Ethernet developments.It has very clear explanation on all the subjects.I particularly like the VPLS section.
Good overview of metro technologies
This is a fantastic overview if this is your first contact with the metro ethernet. However, it may be not enough for techies willing to find an in depth description of the protocols involved. Moreover, it forgets some outstanding proposals in Layer 2 point-to-point transport over MPLS networks, like the ones from Kireeti Kompella, even though it comprises Kompella's BGP approach to VPLS. In a nutshell, if you don't know almost anything about metro ethernet, this is a 'must have' book.

Authoritative guide to metro Ethernet services/technology
Sam Halabi's book is described on the cover as "the definitive guide to enterprise and carrier metro Ethernet applications". As you would expect from the author of the justly-celebrated "Internet Routing Architectures", Halabi does a superb job.Read more

Full of fundamental and transcription errors
The content is interesting.
OK for a salesman, but overpriced.
The book is fine for a salesperson, but why it cost so much?As a pshysisist the book gives me a good reference on how to approach explaning some technologies to non PhD people.By all means not technical - childs play.

Not easy to understand
Too complicated with all the abbrevations and mathematical details not to understand for "non-scientists". Not everybody is an PhD!Read more

Great Reference
This is a great reference for both the DWDM network designer as well as anyone who needs a quick review of the math behind the decisions.Does a very nice job discussing Chromatic Dispersion as well as Polarization Mode Dispersion.This, alone, makes the book worth the price!
Best book on Optical Networking
The book is an excellent source of information for network design and product development. It covers all aspects of optical network design. No other book covers this aspect of network design as this one does. Network classificaiton and explanation is very contemporary and cutting edge technologies are shown in the manuscript. The futures section covers technologies that seem most appropriate for real time networks. The simulation software is useful for physical layer design as well as network layer routing and wavelength assignment strategies.... 'The' book for DWDM networks
This is good book, giving comprehensive details on the DWDM networks. I think its a helpful reference for beginners as well as those in this field for quite some time. Especially the coverage on WDM network design is really good. I hope we get to hear more from the authors!! But for now...this is truely a must-have for this topic! ... Read more

Best Overall Review of Fiber Optics
I purchased this book, "Introduction to Fiber Optics" by Crisp and "Understanding Fiber Optics" by Hecht to get up to speed on the technology.I work in finance, and am not an engineer.I found this book to be the most clear of the three, and by far the easiest to understand.This book had better diagrams and used better analogies to explain the technology than did the other two books.Read more
