A Great Start
This book is a must for anyone getting into video production.Full of basic information that is conveyed in an intuitive and concise way, plus there is plenty of advanced knowledge to keep you referring back for years to come.Definitely a staple for all video people.

A huge disappointment
I bought this book seeking for an in-depth AJAX reference as it was described by its editors as well as by other reviewers on the net. I found myself reading an entry-level, low-horizon compilation of Google results, stuffed with lots of duplicate, narrow-scoped, non-optimal and non-reusable code chunks.
Great book for both beginners and experts
If you're looking into expanding your web development knowledge and want to learn how to build more responsive desktop-like web pages and applications, this book is for you. Good sleeping pill
The text is unnecessarily lengthy and should not be even used as reference for an introductory course.

Horrible book for communication, great way to fall in sleep
I had the (bad) luck of having Dr. Roberts as my professor for Communication Systems.Frankly, his book sucks more than his teaching style. This book is very hard to follow, and its the most boring book ever.Not many useful examples, no detailed explanation of how to solve problems, this book is useless.

Very poorly written text.
I currently use this text in an introductory course to communication systems.I find the text very porrly written with large numbers of errors.The errors are sometimes easy to spot and sometimes rather difficult to find.My professor many times stumbles over the errors.Sometimes it's a battle to understand the examples worked out in the text.A good example of the extent of the errors can be found on page 109 where the authors claim that 35 + 55 - 199.1 + 20 equals -144.1.I thought that such addition was taught in 1st and 2nd grade.A second example is much harder to find such as the + sign instead of a - sign in example 3.5-1 on page 122. I could go on and on with several more examples of egregious errors, but there's not enough room to fit them all.I have written letters to my dean, the editors, and the publisher stating that this book is riddled with many many errors and should be immediately pulled from course materials and publications.If anyone writes a positive review of this book they are either lying, incompetent themselves or had a very good professor who could help them past the errors in the book or avoided using the text as much as possible.If you have a professor who is using this book I recommend you either drop the course or see if the professor is willing to change the text material. ... Great overview of wireless design
Complete wireless design was a very useful book in developing an understanding of wireless systems, filters, matching circuits, microstrips etc...
Excellent book on Wireless Design
Circuits and Wireless Communication designers and Enthusiasts....ENJOY! The "What you always wanted to know" Design Book
It is not often that you find such a good book that packs such a lot of helpful design information in one volume. Not only does the author get straight to the point without boring you with complicated mathematics and derivations like in some books (there are enough clogging my bookshelf), but also his simple formulas with short and powerful theory is enough to get the job 99% done. He proves that you don't have to get into very elaborate and complicated math routines to get a working design on the table. Sure there are instances where that is needed but as he explains in the book most of the number crunching and optimization can be done by CAD programs these days, leaving it unnecessary for example to hand calculate filter values by hand in these modern times. It is also nice to have a variety of programs included on the CD-rom. Even as a designer for the last 15+ years this book "taught an old dog some new tricks". This will help especially the rookie designer to get working designs in a short time and to avoid pitfalls. Definitely one to have on your bookshelf! ... Read more

Cannibalizing on Manolakis' other book?!
I just got it the other day, and saw much more changes than was originally reported.
Good book
I have read many DSP books, this turns out to be the best one. The other good DSP book to mention is the "Understanding Digital Signal Processing" (Lyons) which is written in favor of beginners. Great Teaching Text - Ok Reference Text
I took a graduate course in Microwaves at ASU taught by a former student of the author for which this was the text. Overall, the book is well written and is an excellent teaching and learning tool.The problems at the end of each chapter are superb.The text provides excellent coverage of practical microwave engineering at an intermediate level.

well written, but out of date
Since this book is from 1998, it's quite out of date and doesn't cover many new media or ideas from the last few years.

Simply the Best Book on Audio
This is the best book on audio I have seen.It covers a broad range of topics in great depth. The most authorative work I have seen.
I have been playing around with amplifiers and recording equipment for a while now - never had formal education in audio engineering, but I do have some electronic background. This book has helped me a lot in refining my recording techniques, my audio system itself and furthered my understanding of audio systems from microphone placement to cabling, speaker placement, phono cartridge alignment to name but a few. Whatever subject I sought advice on, this book has so far provided me with the answers. I would go as far as saying that whatever this book does not cover is not relevant to audio systems. One word of caution though, this book is not like a "cookbook". You have to have an electronic background in order to make full use of the book - as the title rightly puts it, it is intended for engineers.

Handbook For Sound Engineers
You MUST buy this book!Pretend you did not see the price and order this book.It is the most comprehensive book on the subject that I have ever run across.It contains more than 1550 pages of information, diagrams, schematics, and just about anything else you could ever think to need.Covers everything from Accoustic Theory to Zener Diodes (I don't know what they are either...I haven't read that far yet!).I am planning to use this as a refresher for myself (that is what my schooling is in) and for training more sound techs at my church.Read more

Good for learning, less useful as a reference.
Balanis's text is useful for someone first learning graduate level electromagnetics because it walks things through in great detail.However, the text is so detailed that it fails to cover more advanced topics and doesn't have the breadth of other EM texts.

What a Great Textbook
I have many E&M texts primarily because there are so many nuances to learn and I find it important to have different points of view. However, the Balanis text does something the others doesnt. It covers a great deal of ground and puts the multitude of equations into a 'BOX' for easy reference. And all these equations are derived in a very straight forward fashion so a person can remember them and understand their basis. Most texts have the equations all over the place and when trying to solve problems you wonder where to look next.Not so with Balanis.In fact, I have definitely been able to solve E&M problems now after reading his book then I could do before it. If E&M is your field this text is a must.

Good theoretical treatment of electromagnetic theory
In this book Balanis goes into great detail covering the solutions of the wave equation for several important boundary-valued EM problems in different coordinate systems. One of the other reviewers complains of the wordiness in this book and how Balanis' solves both the TE and TM problems in every case. I do not see the faults here as these are fundamental concepts that all graduate level electromagnetics students need to become familiar with. Wordiness, especially to someone unfamiliar with many of the more complex topics in electromagnetics, is only beneficial.

Good overview of the tools available.
I have to admit that this is not a book that I have read cover to cover. I have dipped into it to cover topics listed in the CCIE voice exam. I have found it to be very useful in that respect. For each topic it gives an overview and brief details on configuration before going on to explain how to troubleshoot problems. It will not replace the troubleshooting resources available on CCO, but it will give you a great place to start!Read more

Too many errors and no errata
The book is decent - better than a few I have purchased but suffers from a common failing in technical books - it is repleat with errors. Really, a book which is used by some in technical schools or colleges should have only a few errors at most. This book has scores of errors, which makes learning very difficult. Like most subjects if you intend to teach yourself, you will need three or four references including PLC manuals in order to resolve the many ambiguous diagrams and statements in the text...

Great teaching material
I teach electricians about PLCs and use this book as the class textbook. It has very good coverage of the subject. There are other books that are less costly and cover the same basic material (but not in the same depth that this book does).

Excellent PLC Book
Stenerson's book is an exellent introduction to the subject of Programmable Logic Controllers.He uses several of the major brands in his discussion of automation.The book is not designed to make one fluent withone particular PLC, but rather to give one basic knowledge which isapplicable to all brands of PLCs.Read more
