2-0 out of 5 stars crap
not very helpful compared to the textbook I have. It has a lot of problems and worked out solutions sure, but not a whole lot on explaining the concepts behind them in words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent as a cheap textbook and source of solved problems
This little Schaum's outline is an excellent introduction to signals and systems aimed primarily at the upper undergraduate electrical engineering student. It starts out with an introduction to the various properties of systems - Linearity, Time invariance, causality, BIBO stability - defines them clearly and explains what other properties hold if these properties are present. It does this in plain language that is absent in many expensive textbooks. Next it moves on to clearly describing convolution - the bane of many an EE student's existence. Next it shows how the loathsome task of convolution can be replaced by transform methods if you are dealing with an LTI system. The Laplace Transform method is introduced for continuous systems, and the Z-Transform for discrete time systems. Next Fourier analysis is explained for both continuous and discrete time systems. Next, the student gets just a taste of control theory with a chapter on state space analysis. The final chapter is on joining continuous and discrete systems with discussions on aliasing and sampling of continuous signals. These are very important since everything starts out and often ends up as an analog signal, even if you process it digitally. Of course, there is the ample helping of examples, solved problems, and unsolved problems that Schaum's outlines are famous for. I highly recommend this cost effective study aid.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
It's a great book with hundreds of solved problems. I used it with "Signals and Systems Made Ridiculously Simple" (Zoher Z. Karu) for learning Signals and Systems (with no prior knowledge of the subject) in 4 weeks. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book
The book is well written but not very extensive. It points to the applications right from the beggining and it is certainly of great value for students and engineers already engagged with Balanis Book on antenna theory. I strongly recommend Makarovs book for training students with a strong numerical methods background on electromagnetics, as a prerequisite before taking the course. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Its about time!
This is the Bible on Telephone Systems and it only took 100 years to write.I was searching for a long time for such a book only to be disappointed time and again. From beginner to expert the book has something for everyone and goes into great detail about topics not usually found elsewhere like switching fabrics and photonics as applied to formal telecom.Dr. Thompson has created the defacto standard reference for the true, hardcore, telecom professional and others who seek to enter this domain.I would recommend the book specifically to those in or entering the field of Voice over IP to gain a solid perspective on what they will be dealing with when it comes to convergence.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good reference; poor introduction
Don't waste your money on this tome if you're a beginner like myself. However, if you are a professional, this would be a great reference to have on your desk.A more detailed book on telephone switches probably doesn't exist.4-0 out of 5 stars More pictures and tables would be helpful
This is a "the real deal" book for beginner in switching and telephony world. Although this book requires some preliminary knowledge of North American industrial telephony standards and understanding, the author tried (as best as he could) to explain everything in details. There are no skipped topics, to be concerned.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Electromagnetics book
Pros: Relate EM into real life examples, which makes the book interesting to read. Simple but powerful examples and equations which made my life a lot easier.
1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Book
I'm currently in an electromagnetics course that uses this book and this book is awful. The author cannot explain the concepts in a clear manner. The author skips parts of the explaination leaving me confused as to what he did. Also the examples in the book are not very good, an answer is given with little or no work. The book needs more examples and needs to explain the concepts much better. If you're in a course that uses this book get another book, such as Schaum's Outline of Electromagnetics. From a student point of view, this is a horrible book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Non-traditional ordering of chapters
I just completed a junior-level course which made use of this text.Although the topics are arranged differently than in similar textbooks, I found the explainations of EM concepts quite good. The main strength isgetting right to Maxwell's equations in chapter two(--after all, that'swhat EM is all about, right?).Maxwell's equations are explained well andat an introductory level so that the reader is not overwhelmed. The mainweakness is the very underdeveloped first chapter, "ComplexVectors" which is too brief and oversimplified for the subject matterat hand. The book also presents very informative and even entertainingasides on applications, such as "anti-glare headlights"(polarization), "tails of comets" (radiation pressure) and"microwave ovens" (penetration depth). Overall, a very goodfirst EM book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Cheerleading, Limited Sport
As one would expect, there's plenty of cut-and-paste terminology and mathematics from current academic engineering topics. So there's a lot of cheerleading. But missed is the opportunity to show in depth how useful theory (Signals & Systems, Control, you name it) can be in solving Wireless/Digital Communication problems. So she honestly failed to capture the actual sport of Communication theory (Wireless, Digital, or Otherwise).

5-0 out of 5 stars An appreciation for comprehensive book
The books presents a comprehensive description of wireless communication systems supported with gamut of examples from the world around us.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant book
In this book, the author merges her deep knowledge of the field of wireless communication with her passion of transmitting her knowledge to others. The evident didactic skills of the author are put into service to explain in a clear, profound and accurate way not only the fundamentals of wireless communication systems, but also some of the most recent development in the field, such as MIMO, adaptive modulation, equalization, multicarrier and ad hoc networks, in such a way that the reader will soon find himself immersed in the excitement of this up-to-date knowledge. The book also includes the information theory point of view of both single user and multiuser wireless networks, which are usually omitted in other textbooks in the field.Students pursuing a degree in electrical engineering will find in the first six chapters a comprehensive treatment of the fundamentals in the subject, saving a lot of time, as very few books treat the fundamentals in such a clear and, at the same time, deep way. Students pursuing a Ph.D. degree in the area will find an indispensable reference. For practicing engineers, this book will provide the design tools of modern wireless networks. This book will shortly become a classic. It is simply, an excellent job.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Digital Logic
Book has all the details that one need to know about digital logic...right from basic gate level to information on advanced CMOS logics. I would also say that this is a GREAT book to read in preparation for interviews for digital design engineers. The book has a CD included with it and has software that can be used to write, test, simulate and synthesize the verilog that you may want to write after reading through each chapter. On a whole, I am very happy to own one of these books.

3-0 out of 5 stars excellent starting point, but use with care
Fuel cells is a very difficult topic to write about because of the interdisciplinary nature of the subject.I am using the book to learn about Fuel Cells myself and my feelings are mixed. While this book is an excellent starting point, there are some over simplifications and errors. As a Mechanical engineer, some descriptions in the text made me cringe.Watch out for errors in some equations.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best television production textbook ever!!!!
This textbook is a truly fantastic textbook if you want to learn about television production. There are no other textbooks like it.....it literally is the bible for all television production students. I have done several internships in the field of television and this textbook has covered a lot of what I have done in these internships. Its amazing how much of what I have read and seen in this textbook are also things that I worked with in my internships. It's simply the best textbook out there for television production students!!!Look into other works by Herbert Zettl, he is the Sigmund Freud of the television world! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The most universal treatment of the subject
I say universal because this book would appeal to engineers, computer scientists, and mathematicians alike. Mallat was particularly successful to present the topic in a sufficiently rigorous way but without losing sight of the practical and more intuitive side. The presentation comprises the mathematical and the signal processing viewpoints simultaneously. The wavelet field is very vast by now with several subfields. In this respect, Mallat made a great selection of topics in this book. There is a chapter on estimation which offers great review material and pretty much the state-of-the art on signal estimation over a wavelet basis. The chapter on approximation is particularly useful for those who are not well versed in approximation theory and thus areunable to understand other treatments. If you're interested in learning wavelet theory to solve practical problems such as image compression, signal estimation, etc, this is the book to have.

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst textbook I have ever seen
I just finished Chapter 3 of this book, but I have had enough of it. Conceptions about Fourier Transform are not clear at all.And the most unbearable thing is that, there are many printing errors which may lead to misunderstanding.

3-0 out of 5 stars An interesting read on corporate politics
This was an interesting read... it did very much read like a documentary.Alot of times, the public isn't exposed to the internal workings or scandals or fiascos of a company this size, and this very much got into it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A character portrait more than a corporate portrait
This is a fascinating character study.Michael Eisner emerges from the pages of this book as an outsized personality -- Machiavellian, brilliant, impulsive, and less than truthful. The book focuses on his twenty year tenure at Disney and primarily his conflicts with Jeffrey Katzenberg -- who spearheaded the renaissance of the Disney animation unit, Michael Ovitz, his erstwhile best friend, who became president of Disney for one fateful year, and his relationship with Roy Disney and Stanley Gold, who ultimately led the "war" to oust him from the company.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
In this book, the ideas and formulas are well presented to the readers. Notations are very consistent throughout the entire book. I have enjoyed reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is the best textbook I've ever read. The mix of theory and practice, examples and math, and the ordered introduction of concepts flows so well it reads like a treasure quest.Everything has its place, and the place is known - you just have to follow the signs and keep an eye out for those which are subtler than others, just to keep things alive and interesting. It's indicative of the clarity of thinking and broad sweep of this work that you would refer to it (I do and other students I know as well), for other subject matter such as communications, linear algebra, digital filters, probability and control theory. The homework problems are not just a series of one-liners as in most graduate level text books, but well-marked road maps addressing points discussed in the text and opening up new possibilities. The computer projects are very well commented and the results analysed. The language is concise yet fluid, and there are extremely few typos of any kind. This is a very, very high quality work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have Every Year!
There is nothing like the Passport to World Band Radio. If you are interested in shortwave radio, you should get every edition as soon as it is available.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent Shortwave Radio Guide
This publication is the best shortwave radio guide that I have come across. Super reports on various shortwave radios that are on the market, giving you information which helps in selecting your next radio. Much information about different countries and their shortwave transmissions. This is a got-to-have guide.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick and Easy Shortwave Programming Guide
Passport to World Band Radio, New 2006 Edition (Passport to World Band Radio)by Lawrence Magne is laid out in kind of a TV Guide format. This lends itself to finding the station or type of shortwave programming you seek quickly.Like past editions there are articles on shortwave and equipment reviews. While not as thorough as its European counterpart, the WRTH (World Radio TV Handbook) it is easier to use.I find myself referring to Passport to World Band Radio, New 2006 Edition (Passport to World Band Radio)by Lawrence Magne and WRTH on an equal basis. Both compliment each other and should be in the libraries of any Shortwave Listener. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars 5 stars without doubt
I bought this book because I needed to brush up my wireless skills for a project during this summer. I liked the table of contents; it seemed to include pretty much anything I would need. But when reading it in detail, I was even more impressed by the skill of the author in explaining the most tricky aspects of wireless systems, mixing verbal explanations, math, and examples. And the book is at just the right level to bridge the usual communications courses I had heard, and the really advanced research monographs and papers. To summarize, this is simply a great book - 5 stars without a doubt.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent textbook
This is a very excellent textbook for both advanced undergraduate and graduate courses. It covers almost every aspects of wireless communications without losing depth. The further reading section at the end of each chapter is very usefull to readers who want to explore more on particular topics. It is a good sumary.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference and textbook
This is an excellent book that can be used both as a reference for practicing engineers and as a textbook for teaching wireless communications. The book provides the tools to understand the state-of-the-art wireless technology, theory and practice. Topics covered are wide-ranging starting with the presentation of the requirements of wireless communication systems and the technical challenges involved in communication under multipath fading conditions. The book proceeds to present a thorough description of the wireless channel. It then continues with an in-depth presentation of techniques for designing transceivers for communication over the wireless channel. In this part, the reader will find clear, detailed descriptions of technologies currently in use such as CDMA, OFDM and multiantenna systems. In the last part, the book discusses wireless standards covering both cellular and local-area networks. Review questions and exercises are collected in a separate chapter. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book, great support
I've had this book for a couple of weeks and already had some questions. I went on the Atomic Zombie support spy gadgets forum and found the answers to my questions right away. It's nice to know that the authors do provide support and answer your questions in a day or so. There are some others on the forum that also help. It's a great community so if you buy this book make sure you also join the forum. There's a great section on where to find parts used in the projects. What more could a person ask for!? A great book and great support right from the authors. I'm very impressed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Love it. Must have. Not much else to say.
5-0 out of 5 stars It's about time!
This kind of Evil Genius book is long overdue. I like the series for the variety of projects, but honestly most are expensive, complicated and forget finding all the parts you need unless you work at a research centre or university. This book is refreshingly different from the rest of the series.
