1-0 out of 5 stars One of the Worst Books on the Subject
I had a very strong intrest and like for the subject of communications before using this text. Fortunately, I don't judge subjects by a text or an instructor. I realize that just because an instructor or text is bad, does not mean that the subject is bad. In fact analog and digital communication is very intresting. The Schaum's Guide and the text written by B P Lathi are both excellently written and develops an appreciation and intrest for analog and digital communication. Couch's text, however is the worst that I have seen written on the subject. The first problem with Couch's text is the begining oder of presentation. He introduces pulse code modulation immediately after the Fourier series and transforms. AM and angle modulation(FM and PM) should have been presented after Fourier transforms. Also Couch acts as though he has never heard of the concept of modulation index, during his presentation of AM. The book has pages and pages of nothing but mumble jumble empty words. It does not teach you the subject. He hardly has any good examples relative to the problems at the end of the chapters. AM and FM should have been presented in seperate chapters. I cannot understand why anyone would recommend use of this text. The Schaum's Guide teaches the subject much better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book !
This book covers all the communication basics (analog and digital). I found it VERY useful to understand all the topics related to the Communication Systems course at University of Toronto

1-0 out of 5 stars Warning: Bad book
This is the worst book I was every forced to buy for my undergraduate degree.Bad examples, bad questions, just a very poor book. The idea of the class is good, but the way the information is presented is awful and you do not learn anything. The book assumes you know everything about circuits because it doesn't explain anything. Trust me VERY VERY BAD book from learning prospective. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction
This book is easy to read and covers most topics in a logical easy to follow format. I am a architect and needed a good starting point for understanding cabling installation and various types of low voltage wiring systems (voice, data, CCTV, security). The author emphasizes that this book is meant for practical application, but he does provides good coverage of basic theories without being like an engineering textbook. The discussion of how fiber-optics are transmitted was very helpful. If one already knows the basics, this book may not be useful but I found it a good overview of the subject.

2-0 out of 5 stars Data, Voice, and Video Cabling
Very dissappointing. The video cabling section didn't discusssplitters, taps, attenuators, modulators, signal loss and many other areas of video installation. The other sections were somewhat better but also lacking in depth.I've learned more from reading the appendixes in the Leviton Catalog.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellently Writtten
I found this book to be written in a way that can be understood easily by the common "Joe". I've read many books on this subject and found that I wish I would have started with this one to begin with. It lays out the foundations of the infrastructure field in a descriptive and understandable way. Excellent choice. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This text is geared towards a one-semester graduate-level course in statistical signal processing and estimation theory. The author balances technical detail with practical and implementation issues, delivering an exposition that is both theoretically rigorous and application-oriented. The book covers topics such as minimum variance unbiased estimators, the Cramer-Rao bound, best linear unbiased estimators, maximum likelihood estimation, recursive least squares, Bayesian estimation techniques, and the Wiener and Kalman filters. The author provides numerous examples, which illustrate both theory and applications for problems such as high-resolution spectral analysis, system identification, digital filter design, adaptive beamforming and noise cancellation, and tracking and localization. The primary audience will be those involved in the design and implementation of optimal estimation algorithms on digital computers. The text assumes that you have a background in probability and random processes and linear and matrix algebra and exposure to basic signal processing. Students as well as researchers and practicing engineers will find the text an invaluable introduction and resource for scalar and vector parameter estimation theory and a convenient reference for the design of successive parameter estimation algorithms. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Legendary and masterpiece in estimation theory
Without any hesitation, I consider this book as a masterpiece in the area of statistical signal processing. Kay takes the reader to the journey of estimation theory as if a science teacher takes his students to a field trip. The one special feature of this book is the convergence of thought that reader obtains upon reading the book. Kay lays a fundamental bridge between various estimators using his succinct style for describing the subject.5-0 out of 5 stars couldn't rate 6... a must !
I've had tough courses on statistical signal processing as a post-grade student. I am often confused in front of a problem and turning back to the notes taken in class doesn't help much.5-0 out of 5 stars A reference for self-directed study
This text is very good for those who start doing research in statistical signal processing. A lot of explanations, technical terms are well presented and consistent, plus a number of examples that help you to learn about different statistical signal processing concepts and algorithms. Research students can be beneficial alot from this text. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
The book is good and gives you a general view of quantum information and computation. However, the size of the book disencourages beginners to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential text
Despite its age, I keep coming back to this text for the careful prose and knowledgeable authors; so much so that I am ordering the hardback edition, having worn out the binding of the paperback edition. It is both a book to learn from and one to refer to later. It will eventually be outdated, but I don't see this as having happened yet. Although a large book, it is not bulked out like some, containing a lot of useful and relevant material. Perhaps not the text for those setting out from a 'cold start', but then a great follow up to 'The Quest for Quantum Computing" by Julian Brown. Not overtly rigorous, which is to its credit, as the concepts remain clear as a result. Certainly an essential text, where the prose does not get in the way. A very readable book about a very exciting subject, that is sure to deliver to the determined reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction and guide
This book is not only a thorough and gentle introduction to quantum computing and information; it is also a great reference I keep at my desk at all times. The book reminds me of a guide book; if you get lost or aren't sure of or don't know something, all you need to do is open this guidebook.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Descriptive Non-mathematical Approach
Intended for use in an electronics based industrial/manufacturing course, this is an introductory text on process control. It stresses a hands-on operational approach rather than concentrating on mathematical design. The 24 chapters (including one chapter on the CD) can be conbined in various ways to teach courses in several areas including: electrical motors, solid-state variable-speed drives, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), servomechanisms, sensors, and various specialty areas such as instrumentation or process control.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book for novices
Although it is a little bit old and there are so many other books on the subject, I still think that it is one of the bests. This book gives you a good basic knowledge of wireless circuits and systems. It's a good reference to look at too. In general, all books by BR are good, he is an incredible writer. His books are always very good to start with when you don't really know anything about the subject. As you get to know the subject more and more, you will know the value of the book and will discover more practical stuff in it. I totally recommend this one and all his books.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK book, but buyer beware
This book covers a good deal of material in a very hot area. However, coverage is uneven with occasional mistakes. The book seems to be collected in a hurry some lecture notes. For example, the formula for the relationship between jitter and phase noise given at the beginning of the book is wrong (even units do not make sense) and is not the same for the expression given in the PLL chapter (it makes more sense).
2-0 out of 5 stars Content seemed great, but not explained in detail
When I first bought this book, I was very hopeful. The book seemed to cover a lot of relevant material, in a concise fashion. When I tried to read it however, I found it a little bit too much on the concise side. I have read very complicated books with a lot of math before, and I could follow them easier than this "easy" writing style. Almost every subject is covered in other books in more detail and better. Sometimes it's nice to have a simpler book which is an introduction, and that is what I was hoping for, but this just didn't do it for me.I donated the book to the library,as I felt I would never really get too much out of it. This didn't stop me from buying Mr. Razavi's "Design of Analog CMOS ICs " and I liked his tutorial in the IEEE Phase Lock Loop book he edited.I know he can do a better job. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive (2nd Edition)
Well done compilation that is approachable while covering a lot of ground. If you need one book that touches on all the technology aspects of the cable industry and can fit on your bookshelf, this is it. I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tutorial and reference
This book is a remarkable survey of a very broad field. It is necessarily somewhat superficial in its coverage of some of the more abstruse topics, but provides the necessary essentials an engineer needs to operate in the cable television environment.Unlike mere compendia of archival publications, this book has a consistent pedagogical viewpoint and notation. It is oriented towards practicing engineers, providing just enough theory to support successful problem solving.I recommend it to anyone working in the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars At last a fully comprehensive CATV handbook
In a quick growing market, and with daily technological improvements like cable television, the lack of a thoroughly comprehensive compilation was being noticed. This book, a kind of Bible for that specific area of telecommunications engineering, could approach a vast variety of technical and operational issues for the CATV industry. 4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
DVD Demystified is good book to understand what's the state of the art of optic storage and digital video.

4-0 out of 5 stars Definitive guide for DVD authors
I needed to learn about creating a DVD, and most of the recommendations that I got steered me towards DVD Demystified by Jim Taylor. The book, and accompanying DVD, do exactly that - it demystifies the DVD media.
5-0 out of 5 stars Works for me!
Taylor's been the man for DVD sooo many years now and this latest revision is the first I've purchased. The depth of detail and fullness of the technical specification information is fantastic and what one would hope from a classic-staying-fresh.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good primer to computer networks and its design
A comprehensive textbook for undergraduate/graduate students. The book is complete with basic coverage to different types of networks and their working.Treatment to TCP and other Internet protocols well explained with pseudo code for different algorithms.Various extensions to TCP and network security basics well covered. The book does lack some mathematical treatment to the subject which could have improved the content.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for Academic Studies.But...
I am studying this as part of my course.I have found this book teaches you from the base about Networking. It's really helpful in understanding the underlying technologies.Larry and Bruce have done a wonderful job in covering almost all of the aspects.But... I found only one thing lacking. That is...graphical explanations. This book is more of text with required graphics but in some places it took time to visualize the concept.I have had Behrouz A. Forozan's (I hope I have spelt the name correctly)"TCP/IP: The Complete Protocol Suite" along with this.Particularly I found some of the parts like ATM, Routing and other chapters' in this book textually gives us a thorough understanding and Forozan's book does depict that visually in a better way. Here is the bottomline, have this book as "The" texbook and have some other books like the as I mentioned before.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good general introduction, not an engineering textbook.
Although this book clarifies the concepts of networking quite good, it lacks in-depth mathematical & statistical theory.

4-0 out of 5 stars Provides excellent intuitive explanations
While Gallager is lacking in mathematical rigor and in typeface aesthetics, it is a superb book for understanding the intuition underlying the theorems. Sheldon Ross's book is more rigorous but does not offer as much intuition. The two books together make an excellent team.

2-0 out of 5 stars Must have prior knowledge
This book is being used in my graduate class. It is very condensed to the point where many mathematical expressions and arguments are squeezed inside the paragraph rather than being stated on a separate line. As a student I believe this book is of little help without prior knowledge of stochastic theory.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth having!
Although the aesthetics (print, figures etc) of the book leave something to be desired, this is definitely a book one can get a lot out of. Gallager's treatment of the subject matter favors simplicity and his thought process is usually easy to follow. Occasionally one finds less than water tight proofsbut all in all this is a great addition to the bookshelf. ... Read more

I purchased this book in order to add serial IO to my .NET programs.I have been very sussessfull using VB6 in the past but could not get a single code example from the CD ROM to work with Visual studio 2003.
5-0 out of 5 stars The most complete reference for VB serial-port programmers
This book covers serial-port programming in Visual Basic from VB's early editions through Visual Basic .NET, including programming for Windows CE. It's the most complete reference you'll find on the topic. Richard Grier has done a great job of keeping the book up to date through multiple editions. If you do serial-port programming in VB, this book will save you time and trouble.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! Great Book
This is an excellent, excellent reference for using serial ports with VB. I can't say enough for this book. The author knows his material and communicates his knowledge very well. I am using it to write a communications program to interface with field devices using the modbus protocol. The book doesn't specifically cover modbus, but I still found this book to be very helpful. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent reference both for theory and practice
The book provides sound theoretical basis in a non-intimidating way. It also presents many examples that help the reader understand and relate his or her specific needs to general convex optimization problems. I think this book is a really good compromise between theory and practice: it can please the more mathematics-oriented with proofs, definitions, and bibliography; as well as the more application-oriented with examples, implementations, andheuristics. The book excels in readability and style. A perfect balance on the theoretical and practical aspets of the convex optimization. As the name implies, and also as the authors put in preface, it is about recognizing, formulating, and solving convex optimization problems. Provides necessary mathematical background in the first part---not as deeply as a gradute level convex analysis book---and therefore helps reader build a working knowledge. If something is not covered in this part but essential for a working knowledge, then it is in the appendices for sure. Provides a wealth of examples, exercises, and applications. Perfect for self-study as well as classroom use.

3-0 out of 5 stars bloated
as most engineering books, this one lacks depth and rigor. the development of the theories is often cluttered with TOO many examples.

2-0 out of 5 stars A glaring error
We wasted a few days because one of our guys read this book, and used the {exten:1} syntax that's listed in the book, instead of the correct ${EXTEN:1} variable syntax.Looks like something small, but we lost time because of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Asterisk made understandable.
When I first got this book I thought I had been ripped off ... $30 for a thin 160 pages ... Then I read it ... I was able to install an asterisk system build a dial plan ... connect with a remote service provider via PSTN and had a worldwide corporate phone system installed in 1 week. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent book for advanced DSP topics
This book has great material on least squares filtering and spectral estimation techniques. And with Hayes providing the Matlab code to implement the formulas, it is a great help to the student in being able to run the code and see what the outputs should look like. The book reads well and is very easy to use. But it is not a substitute for an intro DSP book like Oppenheim/Schafer or Proakis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, concise, and clean
This book very clearly explains advanced topics in DSP. The notation is consistent and very clean, as well as the book layout and the writing. The examples are useful and the review section is very helpful. This is how a technical book should be written.

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome book
Clear examples, clean derivations, and easy to understand style has Monson Hayes' his signature written all over it.I have his schaum's outline on DSP, and its just as good.I haven't finish perusing this book; i am currently on signal modeling (ch.3, i think) where pade, shank and other methods are derived, and i've already found plenty of application to work on.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful EMC book
This book makes learning EMC as easy as counting one to three. Very logical, easy to understand, and makes you to think how EMC can be fun and challenging. A very good reference book, easpcially if you love to see things simplified mathimatically.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
I consider that this book is avery good start point to introduce oneself into the EMC topic. Clear and pedagogic with a lot of numerical examples and well chosen exercises.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book - Read it all.
Starting first with the negatives, of which they are four.First, do not be fooled by the title word "introduction."This is NOT a book for beginners, but rather senior engineers. If you are new to EMC this is not the book for you.Second, information relative to FCC/CE requirements is dated. Also, some tests relative to CE compliance are not covered.Third, though there are many diagrams, there are almost no pictures. In many cases I found a picture, as opposed to a diagram would have been far more explanatory.Lastly (though it does not bother me in the least, but I thought you would like to know), the book has numerous typos through out its 752 pages.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Covers the Subject Well
Among the historical aspects of broadcasting covered are: development, technology, economics, programming, impact, regulation, and international aspects. The book's beginning tells us that broadcasting has consequences and that theme runs through the text. We're given clear definitions of the key terms used by media professionals and a historical context of their development.3-0 out of 5 stars Standard Intro to TV and Radio Text Book
This is a popular text for your basic college TV and Radio intro class.I have used it for several years myself and it's a fine overview of the subject.Gets pretty technical on electronic stuff and has less on broadcast history and personalities (in my view). Also, since the death ofone author the book has become more dated each year and will continue to doso unless they do a fairly significant rewrite. ...
