5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for communication engineers
This book is like a rite of passage for communication engineers. If you're one of those and haven't read the book, then (1) don't tell anybody about it and (2) read the book immediately! Maybe we can conjecture that if someone knows communication then this person read Wozencraft and Jacobs. It must be said that the book is outdated, but the basics are there in a unequalled presentation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Communication Theory Text - Buy Two Copies
This is one of the best technical/theoretical books I have ever read. It sets the example for teaching the fundamentals of communication theory to a capable audience without diluting the content. Yes it is old, but OLD is GOLD in this case.
5-0 out of 5 stars Should be in every library
This 1965 textbook is arguably the most scholarly textbook ever written for communication engineers.Although the Proakis and Sklar (and also McKay) books are the standard textbooks for digital communications and estimation/detection theory nowadays; they don't even come close to this textbook. The Proakis textbook has gotten the unfortunate reputation as having the most comprehensive treatment regarding "hard-core" communication theory. However, the divergence between modern textbooks which are "practical" versus older textbooks which focus more on "theory" is very clear.Somewhere along the way, today's textbooks have truly lost much of the hard-core theory, and this book has it.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simplifies the complex and highlights the important
I have many texts on RF Engineering and quite a few on wireless networks. This has become the first port of call for understanding Antennae and propogation in this physically treacherous environment. Many real life designs rely on multi-path propogation to ensure access points and other such devices work. This is not often clear in the documentation however. This book will help you solve this thorny problem in your network and show you how to battle reflections effectively. It has the right amount of mathematics to make some predictions reasonably possible.A far cry from the norm in this rapidly evolving field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wireless without the hype
Dan Dobkin has managed to encompass in this book information that most people would take 15 to 20 years to learn. This book is useful not only for engineers researching wireless networks but also for theengineer/student that needs to understand the fundamentals of all aspects of radio systems.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for wireless designers!
A must have for any wireless designer. The author's ability to clearly explain fundamental RF concepts makes this a perfect book for any student of radio. His real world examples, also makes this an indispensable tool for the accomplished professional. The pictures and graphs are extremely insightful and clearly illustrate the points that the author is trying to make.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book.Good vendor
The book is a very comprehensive introduction to VOIP.It is a very good beginning for anyone with either good networking or good telCo. experience. This book would also be useful for a person with a combination of some net & some telco. It is a technical read, but no so much as to be difficult to get through.A person with no true experience may find themselves a little bit out of their element and should be prepared to do some reference work.

2-0 out of 5 stars Difficult book to read and understand
Although this book is but 15 chapters and 336 pages long it took me an incredible amount of time to read through it due to the complexity with which it was written.I've read several Cisco Press books in the same time it took to read this one!Further, I found myself asking the question over and over again, "If this book is about the fundamentals of Voice over IP and is 'A Systematic Approach to Understanding the Basics of Voice over IP', why is it difficult to grasp even the 'basics' as presented by the authors?"As stated in a previous review, the authors have a great understanding of the topics, however, like my Theory of Operating Systems instructor, they do not do well in 'dumbing' down that information to me, a layperson in this field. This book was definitely written by VoIP engineers for VoIP engineers, not for beginners like myself.

2-0 out of 5 stars Best suited for Telephony engineers
Strong Points: -The people who wrote it are definitely knowledgeable: They have loads of information about almost every topic they discuss -Chapter organization: the chapters are well organized as far as the order in which to expose a reader to the topics, building up to the next. Weak Points: -In almost every chapter, the author(s) frequently mention or compare the topic being discussed with an actual Cisco product. While many people agree they make good products, including myself, this book should be about the VoIP as a standard (as the title implies), not Cisco's products. -The author(s) explain most topics by throwing tons of (or too much) information at the reader, including exceptions to the rule - all in the same sentence. Some of the key points are not even mentioned or elaborated on, while the author goes to point out small or insignificant details. -While discussing the history of Telephony and VoIP technology, the use of acronyms is unavoidable, but the author(s) overuses them to the extreme. At times, there are synonym acronyms that the author(s) will use randomly and interchangeably in the same chart, diagram or sentence; this is highly confusing. Also, there is no glossary, so you have to waste time flipping back through the pages to look up acronyms they spelled out once. Many acronyms are not even defined - they are just mentioned as casual talk to define other acronyms (so have your internet browser ready). -The author(s) frequently define topics and acronyms sections or chapters after they are first mentioned. This is also very confusing and frustrating. -The book is filled with charts and graphs. Most of them you really have to study to understand because they use many little pictures for which there is no legend, and some you flat our need an electrical engineering degree to understand. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Foremost book in the field
I had the previous version of this book as my text at USC. This version is a huge improvement over the last one. This one covers all the new advances and adds emphasis on the use of coding to communications channels. A complaint I had of the last version was that it under-emphasized coding gains and Eb/N0 vs. BER performance figures. This book has overcome many of those difficulties. It is still a bit ponderous in places but then it is the only book that covers the material in this much detail, truly a Bible of the field. It is a great graduate level text and a must-have book for any comm engineer. Charan Langton complextoreal.com

5-0 out of 5 stars very useful for both beginners and experts
a very detailed book for getting into Galois field arithmetics, cyclic codes, convolutional codes, ... As a very beginner I had no big problems understanding the content. I am not the type of guy who could understandjust by reading the theory - this book gives a lot of very useful examples,so you could call it fun reading it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent applications-based approach to Error Correction
Lin and Costello produced an excellent text which is targeted towardsengineers as opposed to mathematicians. The mathematics behind errorcorrection can be extremely intensive and, with other texts, I quicklybecome lost in complex proofs. Lin and Costello present error correction inmethod, with plenty of good examples, which those who need to know how toapply it can understand and the gory details of the theory are not asimportant. I used this book as my introduction to error correction and itcontinues to be a great reference book. The only drawback in it is since itwas published in '82, it stops at convolutional coding and does not covertrellis-coded modulation or turbo codes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars yes, some errors, but overall great text
I give this book a 5, despite the errors, because of how well it covered such a broad topic. The reviewer above mentioned the chapter on RF implementation issues, which was very good. The chapter on smart antennas is pretty good also.I think that it is included because the "software" part of a software defined radio is where beam-steering and space-diversity algorithms are implmented. It's not totally out of place and provides for some breadth. All of these VT profs (Reed, Durgin, Rappaport) tend to put out books that facilitate understanding and then, when you are ready for the underlying mathematics, they'll cite you the places to go for that.IMHO, that's a good approach- otherwise, they might as well not write books and just slap together a bunch of papers, bind 'em and call that a rigorous text.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book with many errors!
This book is a one-stop source for everything you need to know about Software Radio. So, this is an excellent text-book for a 1-semester course on software radio. Some of the concepts such as analog-to-digital conversion are discussed in detail, although the relevance of a 70 page chapter on smart antennas in a Software Radio book still eludes me. A good introduction to RF implementation issues is provided. There isn't too much Math in this book, which is both good and bad. My only complaint is that there are lot of errors, both conceptual and typographical, in this book and many of these errors are not addressed in the webpage maintained by the author. Otherwise, it is a very good book. ... Read more

This book is intended for a read on topics of MIS (Management Information Systems), a predominantly Management subject, that analyses solutions for Business challenges through the effective usage of Information Technology. 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent but pricey
I'm very new to lighting for any film stock. My goal is to become more aware of how to light for film, mainly digitial stock. This books does provide extremely detailed information on lighting, such as footcandles, gamma, lighting terms and much more, but mainly in one chapter. It did provide detail about digital film lighting and standard photography lighting. I wish it gave more insight about "moods" but I learned a great deal. Downside, it's expensive for the material you get.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for Novices
This book dishes out a lot of information in the small space between it's paperback covers.I read it looking for film lighting basics, and had a tough time grasping some of the more technical language involving exposure, T-stops, etc, even though I have a decent background in photography. The book does a poor job of addressing and explaining these key concepts.I gleaned a decent amount of information from the pictures and diagrams, but they were poorly aligned with the text, requiring lots of flipping back and forth. All in all, I would reccommend this book only to people with a fair amount of knowledge of the physics behind photography and/or film.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have

3-0 out of 5 stars low quality paper
For a $90+ book the quality of paper is low and binding very bad. On the very day I got the book from Amazon, I had papers coming out unstuck. The paper used is not archival quality, typically expected for such high priced books. I am very disappointed. I have no doubts the text material is great and will be valid for a long time but I am sure the paper will not last even a few months.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to learn detection theory get this book.
This book presents the fundamental ideas in detection theory (Hypothesis testing for you math types) in a very accessible way.It was one of the few textbooks I could read without feeling like I should be taking a class to go along with it. First the book starts off with a short chapter explaining what detection theory is. This chapter is so well written and illustrated that I've used it to explain to my friends what it is I do at work. This type of very good introduction is repeated at the start of each chapter. But I would have to say the strength of the book is in the examples. All the main ideas are demonstrated by examples that have been worked out in detail. There are several of these worked out examples per chapter and they range form simple, to the kinds of problems you may face in real life. I keep this book on my desk at work, and on more than on occasion I looked liked a genius by using this book and it's examples to solve a problem in minuets that looked like it would take hours (or days).

5-0 out of 5 stars The best textbook in Estimation Theory
Steven Kay has done a superb job. His coverage of different aspects of estimation theory make this book an excellent reference for the working engineer, as well as a great college textbook. All the topics are wellcovered, there are meaningful examples that apply the theory to differentaspects of signal processing, and the problem sets are very useful. Also, the addition of small appendixes to the end of some chapters is veryunique. They usually contain additional material to clarify a methodpresented in the chapter or discuss some mathematical result. A book thatcan balance theory with practical applications is not easy to find, especially in a difficult area like statistical signal processing. This isthe ultimate guide to estimation theory and its applications. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Master Tool for stupidification of next generation communications engineers
Let me explain the title below with a quote: << According to Professor Donaldo Macedo, director of the Applied Linguistics Graduate Program, schools do not always serve the best interests of their students. Combined with media and other social institutions, educational institutions often stifle critical thinking by creating a pretext of equality and perpetuating ignorance through what Macedo refers to as a process of "stupidification" or forced submission of the mind.>>
3-0 out of 5 stars Good coverage but poor organization ...
I both love and hate this book at the same time! Its great for its wide coverage and unified presentation of material but the organization is rather poor indeed. There is little motivation and the material is presented as a matter of fact collection of topics. The presentation also seems to be out of sequence at times. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for I year grad students
Truly a comprehensive book.I have gone through Haykin and Sklar.Sklar is elementary.Haykin is not exhaustive.Proakis is a fine balance between the number of topics covered and the length of treatment of each subject.I am glad that he assumes a certain level of math as prerequisite.I loved the sections on the optimum receivers.Problems are nice and provide good practice of the theory learnt.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So much information in such a small space. Best of its Kind.
Belden is the king of cables and Stephen Lampen is a Belden Kingpin. This book is one-of-a-kind and is a must for anyone working with, or even remotely interested in audio, video, data and/or CATV cabling. It is essential, fundamental knowledge about using cables.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not for the novis.
I purchased this product with a novis knowledge of electronics. I could not understand one page. If you are a novis this is not the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A First Rate Guide
Within its sphere of discussion, this is the best reference manual of its type. There is a lot not here concerning RF and power, but it's not an RF or power book. Steve Lampen is about the most knowledgeable 'wire man' around and this book should go with you each time you visit your local High End audio saloon or any other vendor of these products. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Needs Improving
I used this text in an elective on electrical machines and found the book very difficult to learn from.Readability is not bad.The writing is fine and easy enough to follow but the equations in the text were frequently the wrong equation for the topic.Several tables had eroneous information. While most text books contain some errata, this book contained more than any of the dozens of engineering books in my personal library.None of the end of chapter problems had any answers in order to check work. While only a nuisance, example problems in the text would reference a machine from several chapters back, requiring the reader to flip back and forth to understand the situation of the current example.I did appreciate the fact that the book includes matlab examples and exercises as to aid understanding with simulations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete without being difficult
This book may be considered a reference in the study of electric machines, because it brings the main aspects of electromechanical energy conversion devices without being difficult to understand. Its way for explaining therelations of power/current/torque in induction machines is the best oneI've seen in any book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Electric machinery easy at high level
The most powerfull book in Electric Machinery for the beginners and experts, at the same level of complexity (it's hard to read but it's very interesting in the way of presenting the contents...), requires some background in theory of electrical circuits and systems ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you only buy one book on sound.. This is it
Where do I start? In a nutshell, this book *IS* the only book to have on sound if your only buying one.No lie.My background... 20 years ago I used to be the "The Amp Dr" fixing commercial PA systems, amps, etc. I have a much better background on sound than most, I was an electrical engineer after that, designing power supplies, and other analog interfaces to digital equipment. Most of that has been dormant for the last 20 years, but I recently decided to make documentaries, and as two of my first projects deal with music, sound seemed pretty important.I got several books on sound, I figure buy six, one has to be good. You can save your money, this book was the one in six.
5-0 out of 5 stars A rare 'how to' book that delivers actual content!
I've often been taken in by large reference books that promise to be a comprehensive guide to a subject, but turn out to be a lot of filler(screen shots of PC applications, or an excuse for the author to give lots of less-than-useful anectodal stories, etc.)
5-0 out of 5 stars A Top Resource for Anyone who does Serious DV Recording
This book is a top shelf resource. It is useful to both novices and those with more experience. Starting with the very basics, and that does involve some physics, it works its way through virtually all aspects of sound production for digital video.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good
I had to read this for a graduate class. It is written in a conversational manner. It does explain the topics in reasonable voice.Overall not a bad purchase. It is not something that I will keep but it is good for a library to have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Telecommunications for non-specialists
In Digital Crossroads, the authors, both lawyers with experience in telecommunications, offer a readable guide to the complex regulatory policies shaping electronic communication. Starting with the economic principles that have guided government agencies through the twentieth century and into the twenty-first, they give a basic history of the development of wireline communication, primarily through telephone, and explain how the advent of wireless technology via radio, television, cell phones, and the Internet have affected policies and practices. Although it is not easy reading, both the technical and legal aspects of communication are made clear even to a reader who is neither a lawyer nor an engineer. The policies discussed in this book will affect every citizen who cares about obtaining and communicating information to individuals and groups. Understanding the background given here, will help individuals follow the current legislative news as Congress revises the 1996 Telecommunications Act. This is a book many community groups and activists should read and discuss.

5-0 out of 5 stars That rare combination: comprehensive and accessible
Digital Crossroads is that rare combination, a comprehensive and accurate -- but well-written and accessible -- presentation of the state of the technology, economics, and law driving today's complex telecommunications industry.I used it in my Albany Law School seminar on Telecommunications Law for the 21st Century, and students found it highly accessible--especially the technology chapters. The book is a real accomplishment: comprehensive, thoughtful, and forward-looking, without being swept away by the latest gimmick off the shelf. It is also an extremely well written and organized book, clear and authoritative. In addition, for either the practitioner or academic, the inclusion of relevant sections of the 1996 Telecommunications Act adds value and convenience. Making coherent sense of this industry, its history and trajectory, is a daunting challenge and one the authors met, apparently without flinching.
