3-0 out of 5 stars Not A Must Own, But A Good Book
Today, product performance requirements and environmental concerns force designers and productassemblers to become more aware and involved in electronic packaging and interconnect decisions than ever before. Product performance requirements spiral from the effects of increasing operatingspeed, decreasing package size, lowering cost, and reducing time to market. These spiraling requirements decrease the emphasis on traditional componentpackaging, raise new component packaging and handling issues, and placemore responsibility for packaging on the assembler, all the whileincreasing component and product complexity. Environmental concerns drivenew requirements for cleaning, interconnection, and reclaiming andconserving resources; and political responses to issues, previously beyondthe scope of influence on engineers and scientists. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Professional writes a professional book

5-0 out of 5 stars Wasn't the book described
The description given about the book did not correspond with the book I received. The book I received was not a hardcover nor was it the 550 pages as described. It was the paperback version that contained 384 pages. However, regardless of being paperback rather than hardcover, it was still the same book I needed. I ordered it on thursday, and received it on monday. The shipping was extremely fast and I'm very happy about it, because I needed this book ASAP to do my studies. And the price of the book couldn't be beat, I practically saved 60 bucks for a new book.

1-0 out of 5 stars not for beginners
I had to buy this book for my class. This book doesn't instruct how to input equations. Not enough example answer codes for each problem. Less visual and tedious to follow all words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is a well-written book that provides a nice, concise introduction to numerical methods. As with other books by this author, it is very student friendly and should be particularly useful for people, like myself, who use it for self-study. I was not familiar with MATLAB prior to using the book. This book made it relatively easy for me to pick up the fundamentals and then implement numerical solutions. As a computer scientist, I also liked the emphasis placed on the development of M-files. My only criticism is that I wish the book covered more material. I hope that the author expands it in future editions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Needs an update... but still a must for every RFID professional
Book provides a solid foundation for RFID physics and the fundamental concepts. It gets really boring at times because of its staright forward approach and technical jargon. There is no other book in the market that capture RFID in such a depth; however the book is requires a immediate update to incorporate EPCglobal standards and other recent developments in the RFID industry.

Editorial Review

Introducing concepts in the analysis and design of analog and digital communication systems, this text is intended primarily for use in a senior or first-year graduate introductory course in communications. It assumes a strong background in signals and linear systems theory and elementary probability. The text provides a detailed coverage of communication systems topics, including source coding, channel coding, baseband and carrier modulation, channel distortion and equalization, synchronization, and spread-spectrum techniques. Because of the increasing prevalence of digital communication technologies, it gives significant emphasis to digital communication concepts and techniques. Although the text is more theoretical than applications-oriented, it contains over 180 worked-out examples and over 480 problems (many with answers) to aid the reader in applying the theory to real-world situations. The authors give extra attention to the more challenging concepts, making this an ideal text for those new to the subject. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the best network flow book for computer scientists
I've been using this book as the primary text for my class in
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Introductory Book
This is a good introductory book. I particularly liked the applications of the problems, introduced in the book. The main negative point that I could mention is, the redundant explanations and discussions you might see in different chapters. I would say the volume of the book could have been reduced by some 15%-20%, if the authors had chosen to be more concise.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for Network Theory and Application
This book contains a lot of great algorithms for network flow theory and it also contains many of the great applications, which are very useful in practice. This book is very completed. Personally, I learn a lot of new things about Multi commodity Flow, which are the use of Lagrangian Relaxation, Column generation, Resource allocation techniques for solving multi commodity flow. There are also the good chapters in Convex cost flow and Generalized Flow and good appendix in complexity. Beside this book is very easy to read and understand. It is a great idea to have if you are in OR or IE major. :) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars GreatBook As Far As It Goes
I have used this to get a good background in the topics covered, especially inference theory, and in general I found it to be great book which fills a market gap.The only sins I see are sins of omission.I personally would have enjoyed seeing a more task driven organization.I seem to need these methods periodically but I never seem to need the same method twice. Also, many of the techniques are heavily iterative, i.e., monte carlo, neural networks, etc. This is fine but much of what I do is in the context of simulations where 100,000 step iterative methods don't work so well because of resource constraints.Historically, that has been the problem with many of these methods. They are useful for relatively small domains but don't necessarily work that well for "real" problems. That is probably why more task oriented books are not available.Of course the author is following the outline of the current research into the subject manner which in turn is largely determined by "interesting" and "doable" problems. The real progess in this field will come when the problems are formulated more by what is needed in the nontraditional domains of application. A good example of a useful compression (and identification in some cases) technique that is not covered is Principal Component Analysis.Technically, it is in none of the technique domains covered in this book, but it would have been nice to see some of the methods in the book compared with PCA.The author does make the statement at one point that image recognition is an interesting problem for which the method being discussed at the time is used.Nevertheless, this is a great overview of the subject manner and is very entertaining. That in the long run probably explains the problem: it is a textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have...
Uniting information theory and inference in an interactive and entertaining way, this book has been a constant source ofinspiration, intuition and insight for me. It is packed full of stuff - its contents appear to grow the more I look - but the layering of the material means the abundance of topics does not confuse.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good value text on a spread of interesting and useful topics
I am a PhD student in computer science. Over the last year and a half this book has been invaluable (and parts of it a fun diversion).

2-0 out of 5 stars A very elementary attempt at Video lighting
I don't usually criticize a book too badly, but this one just isn't cutting it (or the light for that matter)...it's so basic that if you have any knowledge of basic photographic lighting, don't even bother with this one because it's all repetition.I wanted to learn about lighting for subject movement and most of this is people sitting on their duffs (which is about 20% of the time)..you can tell the author photographs mostly sitting subjects - he may as well be a still photographer! And when he talks about onset and offset lighting, he says arrange it until it looks good - nothing is said about broad or short lighting and how it can flatter a thin or round face....He forgot about the most important thing - the subject.I teach a photographic lighting class, and this would not even be close to the book I would recommend. If you really want to learn about lighting, buy the book called: Set Lighting Technician's Handbook for film lighting equipment, Practice and electrical distribution by Harry C. Box.(this is really his name)....Anyhow, I'm not sure what I'm going to do with my expensive copy of Lighting for Video - I may use it for my next subject to sit on to raise their elevation for a photo - that's about all it is good for. Sorry, but horrible attempt at giving good examples of real life lighting situations - MOVEMENT !!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent detail for the beginner
Lighting for video (or film) is really an artform in itself.Using different combinations of light sources can make your shot look fantastic.............but you really need to know what you're doing. This book teaches you that.It goes into great detail about electricity and how easy it is to overload a circuit and damage equipment, or worse yet, start a fire.Extremely important information to know.I've seen too many people who just plug lights in willy-nilly and when the inevitable disaster strikes just throw the breaker switch and 'give it another go'.This is essential reading for anyone wanting to use lighting for their productions.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best I've Seen
This book is very detailed but lays things out in a way that

2-0 out of 5 stars Unbalanced
The book claims to present a system's view on wireless communications. In distortion of history, the book champions IS-95, which - while having excellent radio modems - did not really succeed as a system. The bias toward products of some companies jeopardizes the scientific banlance of the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Should Life Give Tse Lemons, Tse Just Makes Lemonaid
Engineering is neither a technical process nor an artistic one.It is a very special kind of philosophical activity whereby one willingly places his or her mind and imagination inside a psychological straight jacket.Davide Tse and his partner really get this.Even though their source material comes from those who utterly do not, these guys do a remarkable resurrection job.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book (as others reviewed) on UMTS RN planning.
This is the best book on UMTS radio network planning. In fact it is a masterpiece. Well detailed contents, good diagrams and easy to understand plain English. Covers some theory on air interface techniques as well. Warmly recommended especially for RN planning tool designers.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the Best book for 3G(UMTS) radio network interface
I've read more than 5 books about UMTS air-interface. However, most of books concern only about the physical structure. They didn't tell you WHY the structure is made for. In this book, the explanation is clear and the summary table is really useful. Most of all,it tell you WHY they are made for. Only you know the SPIRIT of physical structure, you will realize the BEAUTY of 3G. I recommand this book for someone with beginning knowledge about UMTS.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative , Well-presented but ....
This is one of the best books I've seen and read on 3G matters. Not recommended for those people who are not technical enough (or who hates) to go into the details of mathematical formulas. This book starts with presenting the architecture of UMTS networks and goes on to describe each of the components of a UMTS network (from user equipment up to the core network). Written by people who actually work with Nokia (one of the companies in the world who are at the forefront of UMTS development).Read more

Cisco CallManager Best Practices is a very well written book with plenty of useful information. However, please note, this is not an introductory book for Cisco IP Telephony. As its name implies, this book provides "best practices" for installing, running and optimizing an IP Telephony network. Thus, this book should be used by experienced IP Telephony engineers in order to plan new deployment or optimize existing IP Telephony networks.
5-0 out of 5 stars How to get the most out of CallManager
Telephones used to be so simple. You called Ma Bell, explained a few things like number of individual telephones, you waited a while, then the equipment showed up and you started writing a check each month. Data transmission was at best a secondary requirement (maybe not even that high). Not so anymore.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book cost to much
The book cost to much but you got to have it

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a training manual
In all states that I have held an electrician's license (20 years), it was mandatory to pass an electrical exam based on the current NEC.This is an invaluable resource and a must have if you are an electrician. But it isnot a training manual.Homeowners and do-it-yourselfers are best servedpicking up a how to electrical book based on the current NationalElectrical Code. There are several here at Amazon.

1-0 out of 5 stars New code book not ready for prime time
Here's a book that begs the question, "What were these guys thinking?" At NFPA, it seems the voltage is on but nobody's home. The new large format doesn't make the book any easier to interpret orinformation easier to find, perpetually sore subjects among users of pastcode books. The text might be larger, which is fine for us aging boomerswith reading deficiencies, but that's not a good enough reason to radicallyalter a long-established format. Further, it seems NFPA intended thisedition for office use, not field use. Those of us who carry the books inour trucks have ready-made spots for the old 5x7.5 editions. This big bookis klutzy and subject to vastly more damage in everyday use.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars It's mostly a reference manual
For me personaly it's too complicated.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
All my CDMA Engineers really like this book

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a very good and serious book.
I don't agree with the previous reviewer. It is a serious book with wealth of information and it is not a marketing info book. It covers GSM basics, detailed GPRS and EDGE information and an intro on 3G technologies. GPRS and EDGE chapters particularly good and contain a lot of simulation results also. Warmly recommended. ... Read more
