2-0 out of 5 stars Better off researching the Internet for free
This book makes a lot of assumptions.Such as, you'll be using ZAP channels. If you are using SIP and/or IAX only, you'll quickly find yourself lost trying to follow the examples since a critical part of the setup is done in zapata.conf (i.e. a useless file for SIP/IAX only deployments). If you aren't using ZAP and you skip that part of the chapter (like I did), you'll pull out hair you didn't know you had trying to get the example configs to work.Likewise, the example builds out even further in the next chapter about extensions.conf, riddled with more ZAP configuration with a smattering of SIP examples. And if you are looking for IAX config examples you can forget it.Indeed it seems that SIP and IAX were after thoughts in this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars The title of the book is slightly understated
I bought this book because I thought that having a small PBX-type system for my home/office would allow me to route faxes to my fax machine, provide voicemail to replace the limited answering machine, and auto attendant menus to route calls to 1 of 3 extensions that I would be able to configure. I saw a solution that would divide business and personal calls and also filter and perhaps stop once and for all those evil telemarketing calls.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Asterisk
Asterisk IS the future of telephony. I have been wanting to dive into the Asterisk world for over a year now, but never had the time until now. I have very limited telephony experience, and what little I know is from working on an old AT&T definity system, in a fairly passive role i.e. watching someone else do all the really cool stuff. Unfortunately, peons like myself weren't allowed to muck around on the PBX's. Lucky for me, Asterisk doesn't care who you are, you are encouraged to muck, and this book is an excellent place to begin.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rosetta Stone of Hypertext
This huge tome is a must have for anyone who wants to deeply understand hypertext and its precursors. From William Burroughs to Doug Englebart and Augosto Boal to Ted Nelson this book presents a huge range of articles (and discursive commentary) of interest to computer scientists, writers, new media workers, artists and everyone in between. This is one stop shopping for new media literacy with over 800 pages of good stuff, much of it very hard to find outside of this volume.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well done!
Fascinating, thorough in its analysis, beautifully designed reader/player.Good, well-rounded selection of texts and new media objects with no attempt to be exhaustive (to the editors' credit).I plan to use it as one of the texts in an upcoming university course. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book for LNA design
I recently took an RF course that was using this book. The examples that were provided were excellent. The theory that was presented wasn't hard to follow, and if the reader was motivated enough, they can test it out using a CAD program.I myself used ADS.This is a must have book if you're going into the RF profession.

Editorial Review

Social phenomena happen, and the historians follow. So it goes with Google, the latest star shooting through the universe of trend-setting businesses. This company has even entered our popular lexicon: as many note, "Google" has moved beyond noun to verb, becoming an action which most tech-savvy citizens at the turn of the twenty-first century recognize and in fact do, on a daily basis. It's this wide societal impact that fascinated authors David Vise and Mark Malseed, who came to the book with well-established reputations in investigative reporting. Vise authored the bestselling Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good (even if not always objective) overall view of Google
Google is nowadays known by a large percentage of people surfing the web. Surveys usually put Google as the first search engine in the world (before other Yahoo!, MSN and Ask Jeeves). Two journalists, D. Vise and M. Malseed, tell the whole Google story from its very beginning (even before Google starts in 1998). Their book tells you the story of Google from several points of views. They skip from search engine to financial as well as human ressource point of views. This gives to my mind a good overall view of Google as a whole. I will summarize by saying that this book is for you if you:
2-0 out of 5 stars Written by an obvious fanboy
I'm sorry, but I can't read this book without breaking out into incredulous laughter on just about every page. The author is so over-the-top in his adoring descriptions of Google and its founders that I sometimes have difficulty not believing that it's some kind of parody. For example, the first lines of Chapter One: "Sergey Brin and Larry Page cruised onto the stage to the kind of roars and excitement that teenagers normally reserve for rock stars.". Ok, so I think, maybe that's just an accurate description of the event. But how about these quotes from the introduction: "Googleware and the lucrative Google ad system are a reflection of their genius and foresight"... (um, I'm pretty sure Overture was doing the paid ads thing before google)... or how about this, from the very first lines of the intro: "Not since Gutenberg invented the modern printing press more than 500 years ago, making books and scientific tomes affordable and widely available to the masses, has any new invention empowered individuals, and transformed access to information, as profoundly as Google.". Um, ok. So I guess Tim Berners Lee inventing the Web itself was a relatively minor occurance in the Googleverse. And there's more - from page 11: "In the rich and storied history of American invention and capitalism, there had never been a meteoric rise comparable to theirs. It had taken Thomas Edison a quarter of a century to invent the lightbulb; Alexander Graham Bell had spent many years developing the telephone; Henry Ford created the modern assembly line and turned it into the mass production and consumption of automobiles only after decades of work...". Ok, so now they are inventors who outshine Thomas Edison. Wow. I'm thinking, get a grip. It's a search engine. It worked pretty well (but is now being overtaken by spammers and other people gaming the system). They built a huge parallel computer system, which is great. They grew at a fast rate, which is fantastic. But let's face it, making a search engine that worked better than the competition isn't anywhere on the same scale of achievement as inventing the lightbulb, telephone, or mondern mass production methods. They are smart guys, but they aren't God's gift to the world. I'm sorry, but the tone of this book just completely throws me off. I bought it because I'm honestly interested in how Google came to be. But I feel like I'm being bombarded on every page by so much adulation for Google and its founders, that it starts to feel more like a religious tract than the history of a company.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is THE book to get started in OCAP
We started our OCAP project prior to the arrival of this book and had to rely on digging through all of the different, confusingly referenced, standards.Every chapter of this book caused a light bulb to click on with a big "ah ha!"Don't get started without reading a copy of this book. It's a 10 to 1 reduction in pain.

5-0 out of 5 stars insightful, and well-written
The authors give a well-written introduction as well as many insights into the design of interactive tv systems. This is a must-have for anyone new in this field. The book presents much more information than those on the interactive-mhp.org website.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book you need if you are serious about IDTV
This an excellent book!A must have! I strongly recommend it to anyone willing to have a broad and at the same time in-depth view into the numerous concepts and APIs necessary for designing IDTV applications. Several code snippets are provided to illustrate how each API can be used: this can help save a lot of time as the DVB MHP and OCAP specs are a little bit hermetic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read "a different"book before this one.
Otherwise it might be somehow confusing. This book is a must for professionals as another reviewer stated but it is not very suitable as the first book on UMTS technologies. This book serves best as supplementary reading. For example new-beginner readers might get confused talkink about SIP at the first chapter before explaining W-CDMA and core-network layout. Anyway, this book contains wealth of information on UMTS technologies and warmly recommended for serious readers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful compilation of standards, if you need them
If you like to read standards or have to in the course of your work, this book offers a useful and succinct compilation. Other than that, there is nothing to recommend this book as it does not help improve your understanding. Then again, this is not the kind of book which people who do not have to work with standards will want to read.5-0 out of 5 stars Not for newbies, must for pros
This book delivers exactly what it promises: a profound, compact and clear description of WCDMA for UMTS. The reader is expected to understand quite advanced concepts of mobile communications, hence it is not a good book for managers who want to know what 3G is all about nor for undergraduate students who want to learn cellular system basics. It is an excellent book for experienced network planners, protocol designers or research engineers, for example, who want to move from 2G to 3G. Simple test: if you don't know what are Erlang-B, orthogonal codes or layered protocol architecture, you want to study them first from another book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A practical resource
I greatly appreciate the practicality of this book.If you can't attend one of his seminars, my recommendation is to buy this book, it will help. It's one of those that I plan to keep in the EMC lab and not just on the shelf.-doug

4-0 out of 5 stars Noise Reduction Techniques
There is a specific topic in this book that I have not seem covered in any of the 25+ book that I have on electromagnetic phenomena. The topic is the shield cut-off frequency of a coaxial cable. Common-mode currents at low frequencies (below a few hundred hertz) cause noise problems with coaxial cables, but signals above tens of kilohertz do not. This is vital data which is apparently not explained in many text books. For me, this topic justifies the cost of the text. Having said that, I am annoyed because the book is quite expensive relative to other books of its size and age. The point is that you have to buy it, but it is expensive to do so.4-0 out of 5 stars Take the course...
If you take the course then you get the book too. And, since Ott is a good lecturer, you will likely learn a lot more than trying to read the book.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Refreshing supplement for revision
This book is a carefully written one which will enable any student to revise thoroughly before DSP exam. It has an outstanding collection of solved problems like most other Schaum's outlines. This book is to be used as a supplement book to any standard DSP book like Oppenheim or Proakis & Manolakis. This book can make quite a lot of difference in final grades of most of students. So, it is advisable for any UG/PG to revise this book well before exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good as a refresher or supplemental text in DSP
This outline could never stand alone as a DSP tutorial, but it is excellent if you need extra problems to solve or if you need a refresher course in elementary DSP topics. Chapter one starts where any DSP course usually starts - with a quick review of signals and systems. Chapter two is on Fourier analysis and discusses all of the basics including the concept of filtering, interconnection of systems, and finally the discrete time Fourier transform and its properties. Chapter 3 is on sampling, and includes a good discussion of analog to digital conversion and how it can induce aliasing. Next the converse, digital to analog conversion, is discussed as well as discrete time processing of continuous signals and finally sample rate conversion. Chapter 3 is especially useful, since most DSP texts do not go into as much detail on practical A/D and D/A conversion topics as this chapter does. Chapter four finally gets into the z-transform - its definition, its properties, and its inverse. Chapter 5 is about the transform analysis of systems and specifically how the z transform makes the analysis of such systems much simpler than what was done in earlier chapters. Chapter six discusses the discrete Fourier transform, which is a finite-series version of the DTFT, which was discussed in chapter two. Because the Discrete Fourier Transform has a time complexity of NxN, the next chapter discusses its more practical alternative the Fast Fourier Transform, which has an NlogN time complexity. This might seem trivial at first, but if you are filtering 1Kx1K pixel images, the difference becomes significant. Although this chapter is very brief, it does a pretty good job of driving home the main points of the algorithm. Also, it has some pretty good exercises on the FFT, which are usually hard to find in textbooks. Now that all of the groundwork has been laid, chapter eight discusses the implementation of discrete time systems, which is the essence of DSP. Common filter structures are introduced. Chapter 9, the final chapter, is on filter design. Both IIR and FIR filter techniques are introduced. Thus, if you are in an advanced DSP course, this outline will probably be too elementary for you. For first semester students, this should be a very helpful outline for transitioning from the study of linear systems to DSP.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginner....Not for advanced
This book is truely for beginners who have no clue of signal Integrity. He starts this book with stuff like Ohm's law and how capacitors and inductors work which most people learn in high school.
5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the most readable book you'll find on this
Brook's book is exceptional in the clarity of the writing, esp. in explaining key concepts that most engineers are fuzzy on.This book is great at giving engineers an intuitive feel for basic electromagnetics and how it relates to signal integrity and emi.4-0 out of 5 stars A chasm has been bridged...
As an educator, lecturer and practicing designer I am given many books to read and make comment on. I find very few books that are able to bridge the chasm between the needs of a beginner learning about signal integrity and the needs of a professional desperate to solve design problems. This book is an excellent primer and reference for understanding the interrelationship between the board layout and the signal integrity problem. This book details design solutions to classic signal integrity problems and educates the novice in understanding the reasoning behind the solutions. There is a lot of nonsense being written about signal integrity and few people have the resources to filter out the chaff from hay. This book proves every principle presented with tested board layouts, demonstrated engineering principles, or documented laboratory results. Some people can see the world in formulas and some see the world pictorially. This book is rich in both forms of expressionism and its presentation will not exasperate the PCB designer who sees the world visually, or frustrate the engineer seeking equations for design representation. This book has been added to the required reading list for our PCB layout designers and product development engineering teams. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars many problems for the student
This is not really a book big on theory. Instead, its main merit is a focused, problem-based approach. For long established subjects like calculus, say, the usefulness of having extensive problem sets for a student to tackle is apparent. And thus there are indeed plenty of texts to supply those problems.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a coffee table book
This is a bit of a rough effort, and won't be making the Best Seller List, but how many books on this subject do? It seems like a must-have. I would only urge that unless you already know 3/4 of the material, you go through something smoother, such as Power System Analysis by Gross, to get yourself up to that point, because you're likely to be needlessly uncomfortable otherwise. Aside from that, this book will be greatly valued by anyone with serious interest.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding book
In order to appreciate this book, one must understand the history behind power system protective relaying. As the previous reviewers have mentioned, the two classic bibles in protective relaying is the Westinghouse Protective Relaying book and the Westinghouse T & D book.Lewis Blackburn put the former book together while he worked at Westinghouse and he had a hand in the second book as well.My father attended the Westinghouse training courses in the 1950's and his instructor was Lew Blackburn.Over time, Mr. Blackburn became a family friend and I grew up listening to them talk about the electric power industry and learned about the subject at the feet of the master.Even though I went into motors instead of relaying, I still enjoyed reading this book.4-0 out of 5 stars Second edition has less detailed examples than the first
In working through the examples, I found that Blackburn decided to remove the details for the solutions of the example problems and just state that intermediate steps are "easily calculated."The answers arestill given, but this caused me a problem when I was working the examplesand didn't get the answer he presented.I had to refer back to the firstedition to catch my error.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Find another book - this one is contains too many errors to be considered credible
Since writing this negative review, I spent a lot of time going through the book in more detail.I will leave my original review because most of the points are appropriate. However, I do see that the book has more value than originally determined. In talking with other engineers, I discovered that the previous version did not have the volume of errors incountered in this version (perhaps in the rush to dump a lot of new material, these problems were introduced).I up my rating to 2.5 stars.

Editorial Review

The second edition of this well-known and highly regarded text can be used as the basis for a one- or two-semester undergraduate course in signals and linear systems theory and applications. Topics include basic signals and systems concepts, linear time-invariant (LTI) systems, Fourier representations of continuous-time and discrete-time signals, the CT and DT Fourier transforms, and time- and frequency-domain analysis methods. The author emphasizes applications of the theory through numerous examples in filtering, sampling, communications, and feedback. The parallel development of continuous-time and discrete-time frequency domain methods allows the reader to apply insights and intuition across the two domains. It also facilitates a deeper understanding of the material by bringing into focus the similarities and differences between the two domains. The text also includes introductory chapters on communication systems and control theory. This book assumes that you have a background in calculus as well as exposure to complex numbers and elementary differential equations. Because of its thoroughness and unhurried pace, this text is highly recommended for students and those interested in self-study. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Well Written
It is probably the best book on the subject which I have had. It was the reference for my undergraduate signals and systems course. It is both good as a text book and a reference. Very well written! explains the concepts very clearly and has a lot of good examples and end of chapter problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good introduction to signals and systems
As a non EE undergraduate, I needed a book to prepare my for the rigors of an MSC degree in DSP which builds heavily on basic foundations such as Fourier, Laplace and Z transforms. I spent 3 months reading the book (while working) before starting the MSc and I found that it was exactly what I needed. There are plenty of examples, which for me are a vital ingredient in any book that touches this area--there is no way to learn without examples and this book excels at them.
3-0 out of 5 stars Best example for "Popular opinion also may go wrong"
It is a popular book in the Signal Processing Arena. But it is still questionable if it is a better if not the best book around. This book is a comprehensive one, no doubt. But it is more wordy and becomes stereotypic after a point. It tests the reader's patience if he is not informed about the above fact. Some students even start developing hatred towards DSP courtesy: its way of presentation. Though many students might rate this book as one of the classics in DSP, the statement is arguable. It is high time this book undergoes major revision and the presentation is made crisp and more user friendly.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ugh...
This book was horrid.I was bombing the class all year with this text, until I bought REA's electromagnetics problem solver.Going into the final, I had maybe a B.By studying the REA book and working my [...] off before the final, I got that up to a final mark of A-.The physics students at my school used Griffith's electrmagnetics book, and they seemed to enjoy that book a lot more.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Text
While I took Electromagnetic Fields I & II courses using the first and last half of this text, I also purchased other solutions manuals and texts to survive. This was, to me, by far the most clearly written and well-presented text.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's exactly what the title states, "Adaptive Filter THEORY"
I was introduced to this text in a graduate course. I was not too thrilled about learning from another Haykin book due to a previous experience with his Communication Systems text in an undergraduate course (Horribly confusing... Proakis's text is infinitely better). To my surprise, the book was very detailed and easy to read. The math is very clear and detailed (great for the self learner). Also, the second chapter, which serves as a review of stationary processes and properties, was written much better than most random process textbooks (I applaud Haykin for this given the section was only a review). In chapter 3 or 4, he shows the derivation of the Levison-Durbin Algorithm step-by-step. I strongly disagree with some of the other reviews stating this text is just the typical engineering manual or cookbook with no explainations.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad reference book.
This book looks very impressive, but if you try to understand it you'll find it very mechanical. There is not much motivation behind the many pages of formulas and derivations. I'm not even sure how many people actually read those derivations becuase even in its 4th edition the book and its solution manual both have many typos (see, for example, equations 8.11 and 12.5). Even the problems are more focused on derivations than on numerical examples. This is a good cookbook if you just want to implement an algorithm or find some pointers to the original research papers. Like many other reviewers, I beleive that engineering textbooks are losing their depth and becoming more and more like instruction manuals.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book for Adaptive DSP...
I have always wondered why many people have negative opinions about books by Simon Haykin, whether it is 'Communication Systems' or 'Adaptive Filter Theory'. Particularly, this book 'Adaptive Filter Theory', in my opinion, is one of the bestbooks on this subject. As Julius Kusuma correctly mentioned, this book is indeed an "adventure ride" into the field of Adaptive Filter Theory.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great subject material, unevenly covered
I had mixed feelings reading this book. Some sections were so good I was saying, "Bravo, well done" while other sections were so bad, I felt sorry for anyone trying to learn by reading them. (E.g. Ch4 on frequency domain modeling.) The book covers extremely useful material, but in an uneven way. It will especially appeal to readers who want simplified discussions of the ideas rather than deeper more theoretical discussions. For example, crosstalk --one of the most important topics, is covered in a very light manner, recommending use of simulators to obtain accurate results. Compare this with the coverage of the same subject in the remarkable book "Electromagnetic Compatibility" by Clayton Paul. Now, that book is "advanced" and "magical". This book doesn't get into any deep discussions of the fundamentals. It says that current flows in a loop, and inductance is related to loop area. Simple enough.Yet, how do we explain the inductance of the pin of an IC package, which is definitely not a loop? How is the energy-based definition of inductance used by simulators related to this simple definition? Even more fundamental, given that voltage can't be defined in a region where the magnetic field is changing, how come we can use the concept of voltage? (Read Paul Clayton for discussing all these concepts in great detail.)
