I have been using entry-level NLEs (e.g. Vegas Movie Studio, Pinnacle Studio, Magix Movie Edit Pro) for about four years. Any progress in my editing skills came from the traditional 'trial and error' approach, and from learning by watching other amateur-produced movies in a video club that I belong to...
A great start
Editing digital video gave me a good insight into the baiscs of digital editing. The last time I edited video it was on a linear system and I found some other texts a little confusing. This book enabled me to use my NLE system with confidence.

second order effects
This book is not for beginners.It assumes that you have experience in RF hardware design.The book shows how to calculate the second order effects in systems using simple spread sheet methods.The spread sheets are available for download at the Wiley FTP site given in the book.

A complete perspective to the system design
An excellent source for the design of RF system level. As far as I've seen, Mr Egan collects and refines all usefull data from several important sources, makes some of them more usefull by some practical adaptations and combines them his experience about the subject. The spreadsheets provided at the Wiley's ftp site are very usefull to understand problems. It also provides necessary hints to reader for adapting them into specific problems. make an overall plan first
The book is mostly about developing nifty controls using X10. In this field, X10 is by far the dominant controller. Soper explains why, by describing numerous varied ways to have it control items in the typical household. It is probably simpler to read this book than thumb through the official X10 documentation. Soper does not require that you have a deep technical background to implement the book's methods.

Very practical
I bought the book as a present but flicked through it myself, it looks an excellent combination of theory and practical application with really clear diagrams.

Excellent intro to circuits and microcontrollers
This book really is brilliant for someone wanting to get into programming circuits.I am coming from a computer programming background and wanted to make the move to physical computing.This book goes through every possible aspect and even gives the shopping list and possible stores for the items needed in the excercises.Even if you have no prior electronics or programming experience this book is the ticket.
Max/MSP users
I am a relatively experienced user of Max/MSP and reading this book really helped me take the next step into physical enviornment modeling. It explained very basic principles, sometimes a little too much, but that is never a bad thing. You can always benefit from reviewing fundementals. It basically covers every way you can hook things up to your computer. It covers Java and MAx software, it covers different types of connections(serial, usb), and it covers a wide range of microcontrollers(basic, pic). This was the most helpful aspect in that I already had experince with PICs, Max, and a little electronics experience; so everything was easy to relate. No circuit analysis at ALL
This book was used for an upper level graduate course at my university.Unfortunately, all of the homeworks used questions from this textbook, and we were not able to complete ANY of them using the analysis (or lack there of) covered in this text.We struggled to find answers in this book, but eventually found the answers using other textbooks or notes we gained from other professors and classes.
Lee's disdain for rigor is antithetical to the competent practice of engineering

The ARRL Antenna Handbook
The book was supposed to come with a CD-Rom. This person told me the CD was missing when they went to package the book. They sent the book free of charge and returned my money. I was told if the CD was to be found it would be sent free of charge. I consider this tops for customer service.

Independent Component Analysis is a young and interesting topic that gained attention and still receiving more of it. Nice and detailed description of ICA
This is a nice and self-contained book on the subject of independent component analysis (ICA). The authors start with relevant mathematical and statistical background (in Part I) to prepare readers for the derivations of ICA (though seasoned researchers may want to skip the first part of this book). The authors discuss the motivation behind ICA and present several ways to derive ICA (since this subject has been approached by several communities). Lester's text offers the most comprehensive overview of visual communication I have come across. His preferred framework is clearly semiotic, but he offers a fair treatment of other theories as well. Section one covers the biological functions of seeing, including the role of the brain, the retina and the eye. He favors the active version of visual processing over the passive version. It makes you appreciate things you didn't notice before

Power Up!
My job recently started to include quite a bit of Electrical Engineering such as generator sizing.I also needed to specify motor controls and electrical filters to avoid interference, and other electrical issues which I had a poor understanding of. I had suppliers and contractors asking me questions like I was some kind of electrical guru.

I think its a good book !
I had engineering science program years ago , but not much electrial circuits- just the basics. I bought this book for self-study. I read through the first eight chapters and worked a lot of the problems without much problem. I then read the chapters on the smaller electric motors and some about controls. Its not a begineers self-study book. If you have the background you can learn from this book;however, I had to read some of the material over several times to understand it. I still didn't feel like I had a good understanding about the basics of electric motors. Like how to wire them up, how to read the nameplate and so forth. This book is for the classroom and lab. It has a lot of information. My local university uses it in their technology program for three different courses I think. ... Read more

Good choice for investigating VoIP for your organization...
It seems like Voice over Internet Protocol, aka VoIP, is starting to become much more mainstream.Not only are businesses switching over, but now you can set up your home phone access to use VoIP (aka "broadband") technology.Ted Wallingford has done a nice job in explaining the business side of the possibilities in the book Switching to VoIP - A Solutions Manual for Network Professionals.
Great book
This book provides a comprehensive look at not only VoIP, but all related legacy telephony systems it may interact with or replace.A wonderful resource for anyone considering a VoIP deployment either at the office or at home.The technical detail and background the author provides in his examples and background information is incredibly helpful.I definately recommend..

Pretty Good
As the telcom manager for a rather large enterprise (45,000 users) I try to keep up on the various books on VoIP and this one is pretty good. It is designed towards someone who is knowledgeable about voice and data but not necessarily someone how is an expert in either subject. It also does a very good job of not focusing on any one type of technology but covers H.323, SIP and Cisco amongst many others and gives you a good sense of each flavor that is available. Perfect but aging companion to Discrete Time Signal Processing
This book does exactly what it purports to do - it teaches the reader how to perform signal processing tasks using Matlab. It starts out with signals and systems and moves on to the DTFT, the Z Transform, the DFT, digital filter structures including both IIR and FIR design, and finally covers some advanced topics in adaptive signal processing and communications. It even contains full-blown projects using Matlab on adaptive channel equalization, binary spread spectrum communications, and system identification. The reader should use another text such as Oppenheim's "Discrete Time Signal Processing" to get the theory, and come to this book on how to implement that theory in Matlab. The one drawback is that the book is older, so it is using Matlab 5. Also, another reviewer mentioned that much of the book is inaccessible to users who do not have the rather expensive signal processing toolkit at their disposal. Fortunately, thanks to the open source movement, this last problem has been solved. Octave, now on SourceForge, an open source code repository, has many of the matlab functions available for free that you need to do signal processing.
Excellent for review of DSP Mathematics....
Great companion book to "Understanding Digital Signal Processors" by Lyons and "Digital Signal Processors" by Hayes. I would recommend this book strictly for a companion book. It doesn't go into in-depth detail or explanation of Laplace, z-transforms, or Fourier Transforms but displays a good foundation for MatLab DSP routines.

Great as a Companion Book!!!
I am currently taking a intro to Digital Signal Processing at my university. I find this book is a very good complement to Proakis' Digital Signal Processing book. I have learned a lot about DSP using these two books. the aim of this book is to be a companion book to more traditional DSP books, it tries to be nothing more. In that regard, I believe the book excels. Get it as a supplement/companion to a traditional DSP book and you will learn how to do DSP with MATLAB. Highly recommended!!! ... Read more

A deep grasp of algebraic coding theory
The book is well organized and mathematically rigorous. It depicts a full picture of conventional algebraic coding theory in a systematic fashion. As a specialist in coding theory, I give my highest rank.

Channel Coding gone wild
I used this textbook for an introduction to Channel Coding class I took (graduate level). I think that the material is difficult, but this book is remarkably clear, considering that. I had no experience with Galois Fields or any of that kind of math before starting with this book, but I was able to grasp it. I think the main thing missing in this book are good summaries for each chapter, giving highlights of the important stuff. Sometimes it's hard to get an overall picture of the material, I got bogged down in math sometimes. Visually, the book is beautiful, good fonts, charts, etc...

Students beware!
I am taking an error correcting code class as a graduate EE student where this text is assigned. The book is a reference manual for people who already know the material. It is not for those who are new to algebraic codes or galois field arithmetic.
