An eyeopener
Before I read Tom Whidden's book I too was victim to a whole load of old wives tales, black magic and voodo of sail trim. Truly outstanding book
The authors draw from their vast experience and share the various philosophies of sail design with the reader, exploring in more detail the North approach of designing sails the engineers way, so to speak.An outstanding book, covering all the important design choices and their consequences, and how they relate to sail trim.The book also includes perhaps the best written, short and concise explanation of the complexity of sail aerodynamics I have ever read.

Learn how modern sails REALLY work!
I am very impressed by the way the author has made a very complex subject understandable, enjoyable and relevant! The science behind it all is fluid dynamics...but to the reader this book is ALL about sailing.Read more

Read this after polishing your SUNFISH . . .
Except for the first few and last few pages, the water-going vessels depicted and analyzed in this fascinating book aren't "boats" -- they're definitely ships. Ships made of wood, developed by tradition and experiment, hand-shaped, pegged together, and amazingly seaworthy. Moreover, what you see here is not merely technical drawings or models -- though those are lovely -- but recreations and reconstructions of the real thing, from a Viking longship and the SUSAN CONSTANT (which made the 1607 voyage to Jamestown) to the BATAVIA and the AMSTERDAM, both Dutch East Indiamen. Also included in the analysis are several musuem ships, like the CHARLES W. MORGAN, and purpose-built modern wooden vessels, like the PRIDE OF BALTIMORE. This is a book all those intrigued by the history of sail power will want to own.

force outboard shop manaul
manual helps but very confusing at locating what we are looking for,when you think you have what you are looking for its not a match dose not have info on if the parts can be changed out with diffrent year but same motor,electical wireing does not help if one of you is color blind,pictureswere you think you may be able to compare are to dark. personaly I don'tlike the way the so called index is it is very confusing ... For battleship buffs
If you are reading this review, you are a battleship buff and would enjoy this book. Revise and reprint this classic!
This was Dr. Friedman's first commercially published book.Compared to some later works it is more concise, has a broader focus, but it is one of the most valuable works ever published.It gives the explanations and reasons for why battleships were built the way they were -what drove the design tradeoffs - and how different navies emphasized different parameters.It also has an excellent photo selection that well illustrates each section, and a set of useful data tables.The only flaw is that as Friedman's earliest commercial work, it is less thoroughly footnoted than some of his later productions.This is one of the most highly recommended books possible for those seriously interested in the technology of the XXth century 'dreadnought' battleship. ... Excellent book for those looking for info on this rifle
I purchased this book and its successor. Having just finished the first volume I must say that I learned just about everything I wanted to know about this rifle. It has excellent illustrations. It gives timeline information as the rifle evolved over the years from pre war Germany right up to the end of WWII.
An invaluable reference on the K98k

Superb book, but LOTS of typos and missing info
This is ballistician's dream book.It describes all of the introductory and some advanced material pertaining to modern ballistics in wonderful detail, and the example problems are useful and illustrative.There is a wealth of information, such as drag coefficients and functions, form factors, and a beautiful derivation of the MPM yaw of repose that do not appear anywhere else in my experience.The experimental and computer generated plots are beautiful and informative. I bought this item over two weeks ago. It said .. ships in 24 hours... still says this.... yet two weeks later and only after I wrote and said .. wheres my stuff they write back and say .. we shipped it today and it will be there in another 10 days..... BUYER BEWARE

Absolute must for nautical archaeology
Casson's book is an essential read for anyone interesting in the history of seafaring. It has been used as a text for nautical archaeology for decades now and has a well-deserved reputation for clarity and completeness. I noticed that the other reviewer of this text took exception to the inclusion of original Greek and Latin sources. In fact, the inclusion of these texts, along with the publication of often hard-to-find illustrations, is one of the great strengths of Casson's book. For those interested in seeing what the ancients actually wrote, Casson has saved us searching the texts out ourselves.

This book is an overview of the evolution of ships in the ancientMediteranean and middleast from rafts and inflated animal skins to behemothgrain carriers that plied courses from Alexandria to Rome.I thought thechapter that dealt with the ships built by the inheritors of Alexander theGreat's empire was amazing in their size.However, I felt that the use offootnotes which were in some instances quotations of ancient Geographersand Historians could have been better incorporated into the subject matter. I also felt that the photos and illustrations while valuble as visual aidsto the book should have been included in the relevant chapters rather thanan appendix at the end of the book.The use of several pages of Greekfollowed by the translation I felt was a waste of bookspace.But as anintroduction to a somewhat neglected facet of ancient history I feel thisbook has definite merits. ... nothing more than a
I saw the book when I bought the first volume, about the fighters and I went ahead and bought this one also. I have got it first, redt it and here is what I can say about it: Soviet Combat Aircraft of the 2nd World War
On of the pleasant surprises of the fall of the iron curtain is that the interest for second world war aviation appeared not to be restricted to the western world. Since then there is a steady flow of books about Russian aviation and aviation on the Russian front, viewed from the Russian side. Superior book - Must read for WW2 aviation buffs
One of a two volume series (so far). This is a superior book with much information and photos, some of which are new, about WW2 Soviet singleengine fighter aircarft. Great Book About a Great Helicopter
This book tells a story about a company that many have never heard of and a helicopter that even less have heard of.Kaman Corporation and its H-43 helicopters.They were unsung hero's of the Viet Nam war performing manymore resuces per helicopter deployed than any other.If you likehelicopters, history, or just want to read something interesting I highlysuggest this book.

Yes, there were more helicopters in Vietnam than the Huey.This book tells the story of the kaman H-43 series...you know the "eggbeater" helicopter. The original '43 served the Navy andMarines in both training and observation roles, and when it was redesignedwith turbine power it became the primary short-range Air Force rescue craftof the 60's. Very Good Beginner Knot Resource
This book is very user friendly.The inclusion of practice pages with holes allowed me to practice the knots whenever I had down time.

The knot book everyone should have
Why didn't my parents give me this book when I was a kid? The Klutz book seems to have all the knots you really need and a few extras, almost all explained in a simple way even an adult can follow. It even includes the strings so you can practise.

Knot Satisfied
For bored people with money for buying knot books, but who don't actually own any ropes, this is a totally cool book because it actually comes with two ropes on its cover!

Informative but very basic
The book was informative but was written for a very basic reading level. I guess this is to be expected, since I would presume the author had to write it for a large target audience.I got most of the information I wanted from reading it, but some of the parts were unnescessary.For example: comparing a recruiter to a car salesman.I did not need to read all the details in this analogy which was brought up several times.I just wanted the facts, which I got but I ended up skimming over parts which, I guess, were added to make it less dry.Dry would have been better.Also, I wish there was more information about officer candidate programs. ... Great technical data and profiles.....
As far as I am concerned, the book is outstanding.The diagrams of the battlecruiser are superb.As a modeler, the book shows clearly, the amount of detail that can be achieved.The profile inside the jacket is cool.For the HMS Hood fan, the book is right up their alley.

Not a narrative of the Hoods experiences, other than a brief description of her tragic end, but a complete technical description of the entire ship from stem to stern, keel to topmast, with exhaustive detailed drawingstaken from her plans. It also lays out her complete mechanical history(refits etc).For naval architects, a great book.
