5-0 out of 5 stars this isn't hard: it's 'ol', not 'aw'
I was pawing through a Port Townsend bookstore the other day and saw the title and more importantly the sub-title of this book. And I instantly had one of those epiphany moments where a major element of the rest of my life fell into place. I've wanted to have the means to explore the world by ocean for a very long time but haven't had any good ideas on how to make progress. I bought Mr. Buehler's book and now I do.
2-0 out of 5 stars The Troller Yacht Book: A Powerboater's Guide to Crossing Oceans
This book is primarily for folks who are thinking of buying, building, or having built a trawler and to take it on long cruises. This is not a book for those who already own a trawler and are trying to find ways to improve them and preparing them for cruising.

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring and Disappointing
I found that the hoopla for this book was overrated. Groves' book was not at all what I expected. I was expecting to read about the personal and daily battles of the scientists (Teller, Oppenheimer and others) at Los Alamos and how they discovered, designed and built the bombs. This was not the case at all.4-0 out of 5 stars How to pay attention to detail
After reading the Making of the Atomic Bomb, I thought I would get a view point from on of the actual participants.General Groves had an eclectic story keeping all his crazy scientists in line to meet an objective. Then handing the construction of the facilities and checking on the progress of the Germans. 4-0 out of 5 stars The head of the project tells his story
Gen. Groves deputy on the Manhatten Project, Gen. Keith Nichols, was once asked what he thought of he thought of Groves. He began by saying "Leslie Groves is the biggest son-of-a $%&%* I ever met in mylife" and ended by saying that of all the people he'd met in his life,he didn't think any of them could have done as well as Groves in runningthe Manhatten Project.I think that if he'd been put in charge in Jan. of'43, instead of Sept., the war probably would have ended earlier, savinghundreds of thousands of lives. This book shows him at his egotisticalbest and worst, and is essential for understanding how and why the U.S. gotthe bomb before Japan was invaded.Just don't expect any modesty at all. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A really practical guide to navigating in small boats
I have read or skimmed dozens of works on navigation.I have also navigated a variety of small boats along the coasts of Nova Scotia.None of the other books provided the degree of realistic and practical advice that this one does.It takes a pragmatic view that the typical small boat operator will use visual navigation where possible, backed up by judicious use of GPS/Loran and/or radar. In my experience, this is the way that most of us navigate. The book provides lots of excellent tips based on the author's extensive experience in small boats, ships, and the coast guard. It also debunks common misconceptions about GPS and LORAN accuracy and clearly explains how to use these tools. One caveat is that the book is biased to North America. This makes it clearer for an audience on this continent, but not as useful below the equator or in Europe or Asia. All in all, if you buy one book to help you learn or improve your small boat navigation skills, this would be the one I recommend. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "The Firecracker Boys" never quit!
With John Bolton as our renegade permanent representative to the UN, working for the US nuclear weapons industry by trying to stop the UN program of nonproliferation, "The Firecracker Boys" so brilliantly described in Dan O'Neill's book continue even today with their diabolical efforts. Not to mention NASA's plan to send nuclear powered rockets into space.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential, scary reading
About a fascinating chapter in American history, and how the democratic process prevailed--barely--over the certain vested interests in the military-industrial complex.Makes Dwight Eisenhower look like a prophet--and also details some of the career of Edward Tellar, rightly celebrated as the father of the American H-bomb but then subsequently responsible for much bad science, including Ronald Reagan's Star Wars. This book is very well researched and documented. One moral to draw: citizens must be involved with public policy. The former Soviet Union, undertaking a similar project, turned areas of Siberia so radioactive that it will not be safe to dwell there for 10,000 or more years. We almost did the same in Alaska--but thankfully did not.Read this book to (1) understand how this disaster was averted, and what we can do to continue to safeguard our democratic processes; and (2) for great--true--story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creepy
I cannot help but notcice how the reviewers which seem to have been deeply disgusted by this book prefer to remain anonymous.Even if their opinion is that nuclear testing should continue, it disturbs me that these reviewers were not taken aback by the colossal mountain of half-truths, misrepresentations, and downright lies that the AEC (Atomic Energy Comission) used to lobby this project to Alaskans.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good overview of design
I'm an automotive designer who enjoys technical reading.Over the years I've subscribed to numerous boating publications and have purchased a handfull of books on sail power yacht design. This book is by far the best.It will answer many of your questions such as "why is a longer hull faster?", "why does 1.34 x the square root of the waterline length approximate max hull speed?".The book is well written and presents a short history of each design element i.e, sail configurations. The technical formulas are seperated in sidebar configuration for those who avoid math at all costs. If you are only going to buy one book on sail powered yacht design-this is the one.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Yacht Design Explained"delivers!
Clear and thorough explanations, lavishly illustrated and wide ranging in scope, put Killing and Hunter's book at the top of its field. "Yacht Design Explained" delivers an excellent mix of the technical with the practical. Killing's extremely readable, clearly understandable text "fairs" seamlessly with Douglas Hunter's outstanding two color drawings. This book covers a wide range of subjects from physics of design to the reasons that various designs work or fail. Attention is given to the history of competetive yachting.Competetive racer, day sailor, dabbler in yacht design, and curious reader alike will find this book a delight."Yacht Design Explained"delivers and deserves to be a classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas - good investment
This is a book for sailboats. My T26 was built in '77, so this book has a lot to offer. The ideas are quite varied, so I'll never use all or even a small portion of them. But just with one idea that I never thought of, the book has paid for itself.Having an older boat that I'm willing to make modifications to, many of the improvements listed are answers to those questions I have about "What can I do to make ____ better?"Like making better use of the space available for what I need, instead of how it was intended. The ideas are lightweight, easy to implement and inexpensive. You have to be comfortable using common tools. This is a DIY guide, not a chandlery shopper's guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another fine Casey "How-To..."
Don Casey has firmly established himself as an effective communicator of all things nautical...particularly in the do-it-yourself category. This is an enjoyable little volume which contains a number of projects designed to improve the safety and liveability of the sailboat. The excellent and clearillustrations make the written descriptions easy to follow. The International Marine Sailboat Library has a number of these useful how-to books (several by Casey) which belong on nearly any sailor's bookshelf.

1-0 out of 5 stars What book!
I ordered this book May 12th. When I followed up on June 6th, I was informed the order was automatically cancelled due to a shortage of books. It would have been nice to know this or at least be informed the order is on backlog. No communication. 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Manual!!!
I ordered the Seloc Manual for the 1.5 to 40 HP Johnsons thinking it would probably be a nice companion to the "other" manual I already had.I was wrong - -the other one is nothing compared with this one.It gave me the know-how and confidence to go ahead and do major repairs as well as tune-ups etc. that I couldn't have done without it.It's just like having a master outboard repairman looking over my shoulder and giving me little hints and suggestions along the way.Lots of excellent photos, too which are extremely helpful.Totally recommended!I would actually give it 15 stars!

2-0 out of 5 stars Outdated Material
Although Roger Freeman is an excellent historian for the Eighth Air Force in England, and the book is an excellent reference guide, it is sorely in need of updating. The book was last updated in 1977, and since that time many things have happened to these former Eight Air Force Bases, many of which are barely visible as bases today.Pictures of "now" are over 25 years old, buildings are destroyed, runways overgrown with vegetation, and in some instances private industry has taken over the base thus not allowing people to visit.I strongly urge Mr. Freeman to update this book, because it is a good reference manual. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars CWA review book
The "Detection Technologies for CWAs and Toxic Vapors" is a good introductory book. The authors did a decent job of reviewing basic instrument technology. Personally, I was looking for an integrated sampling plan and specific equipment recommendations- the authors failed to address those areas. It also uses dated material- many of the documents referenced were 1997 Army tests, which have sometimes been superseded. At $125 for a small book, it's overpriced for the general market (first responders) and lacking in details for the specific chem warfare chemist market. It's a good introduction to testing methodology and reads like one of the SBCCOM/RDECOM testing manuals (that's because the authors work there). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive work on guerrilla warfare - a must have
This is the definitive work on guerrilla warfare. No other book covers the subject with the breadth and depth equal to this one. If you are a serious student of counterinsurgency, guerrilla warfare, unconventional warfare, 4th generation warfare, or whatever you want to call it; you will want this two-volume set on your shelf. You will read it then refer back to it again and again. This monumental study begins with guerrilla warfare in the classical age and brings you up to date through recent conflicts.I believe the first edition of this book was through America's involvement in Vietnam but subsequent editions have been expanded to include far more since that time.I can not stress the importance of this book enough for this topic. You will not be sorry to have it ready and available in your library.

5-0 out of 5 stars War In The Shadows: Fascinating!
A must for any Military and History buff. This book has bought me endless hours of reading enjoyment. As a Latino, of most interest to me were the chapters on the Mexican revolution, Spanish-American war and Che Guevara. Asprey writes in great detail and in chronological order, he also provides the reader with the political and social climate of the time and events that lead to any engagements against opposing forces. Keeping any opinions to himself, he just gives the fact as if we all are spectators viewing a movie. Asprey describes the guerrilla units, their political indoctrination, strength and weakness and field attire and equipment. The maps help illustrated the subject area and regions, any troop movements and battles fought that help paint the complete picture. He presents any leading figure with importance and when able too delves into their personal histories and background. I'd fancied myself a authority on History and warfare till I read Asprey"War In The Shadows" and found out just how much I wasn't aware of. So put this on your list of reading materials and tell your friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Shadows Wars:Why Americans Can't Learn from the Past
When War in the Shadows (WITS) was first published in 1975, it infuriated members of the US military.Asprey's denunciation of high-ranking officers' conduct of the war in Vietnam came under intense criticism.Asprey claimed the US military lost that war due to its total ignorance of unconventional guerrilla warfare.Though blackballed by military scholars for almost a decade, he refused to retract his accusations.Instead, he continued to cite 2000 years of guerrilla/terrorist warfare tactics, operations, and strategy as proof the US military violated most, if not all, principles of unconventional warfare.Nineteen years later, he revised WITS, and along with that revision came a newfound respect for his insights.WITS is still the most definitive study of guerrilla/terrorist warfare available and it continues to remind the military of the requirement to fully understand this type of warfare's capabilities and limitations.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Expensive but worth it in terms of unique well presented information
This book is one-of-a-kind, as far as I have been able to determine, in that it is the only book that deals specifically with the guidance and control of marine vehicles. The book deals mainly with the modeling and control of unmanned untethered underwater vehicles (remotely operated vehicles and autonomous underwater vehicles) and high speed craft (surface effect ships and foilborne catamarans). It presents clear concrete mathematical models throughout. It does not drift off into an unreadable "equation jungle" at any point.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disapointing experience making the goats milk soap
Im a novice soap maker, but very good at following directions. However, when I attempted the goats milk soap (basic recipe 5) it was a disaster! The directions caution you about adding the lye to the goats milk...first it will be cloudy, then tan and you need to watch it carefully so you add to the oils before it turns orange.Well, my milk was tepid as the directions state but as I slowly added the lye, the mixture turned orange immediately...no cloudy stage and no tan stage!I poured it into the oils anyway following their instruction all the way..and the whole mess seperated as soon as it was poured into the mold...a complete waste. 3-0 out of 5 stars Disapointing experience making the goats milk soap

Out of all the "popular" soap books, this was one of the first I bought and the one I use the most! I have made most of the recipes in this book and haven't had a failed batch yet, either hand stirred or with a stick blender. I was a beginner and now everyone wants my soaps because they are mild & natural, smell so "real" and are simply wonderful. Over the years I have become more sensitive to chemicals and "fake" smells. I have solved that problem by making and using these natural soaps for myself and my family.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book ,poorly organized dropping from five to three.
This could have been one of the best WW II books to come out. I have a collection of over 300 covering all wars from the civil war. I have read approx. 1500 more. This book has all the facts at hand, but the presentation lacked flow. The book had great pictures that helped to keep track of the events. The writer jumped around like a flea on a hot plate. I would love to see the life of one of the greatest fighter pilots of any war in a pocket book by a author like Tolliver, Alexander Mc Kee or Edwin P. Hoyt who can make the story flow. I waited many years to get this book so it was a great disappointment in its present form. Still its the best on the market for the life of the Star Of Africa. Less pictures of Marseille and more of the aircraft used in Africa would have helped also.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Extraordinary Man
This is a great book that shows the extraordinary abilities of German pilot Marseille as a flier and marksman as well as his general persona. The book almost reads as a novel in places, with dialogue among the main real-life characters. What comes across is Marseille's self determination in perfecting his art as a fighter pilot and always pushed himself to his physical and mental limits. Marseille was always seen pushing his aircraft to its maximum performance and always seemed to fly harder and faster than his peers in combat. But it is not just Marseille's flying ability that made him truly one of the greatest aces of all time, but also his mastery of deflection angle shooting and sparing use of ammunition. His exploits of shooting down six aicraft in quick succession in seven minutes have become legendary. He was also probably the only pilot to master the tactic of diving in and out of an enemy defensive lufbery circle. It is probably a fitting tribute that he remained unvanquished.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on the greatest fighter pilot
This is probably the best book on one of, if not the, greatest fighter pilot of the war.Even though there are a few Marseille bios out there, this book is definitely the best and worth it!The pictures and narrative are enjoyable and provide a fairly comprehensive account of Marseille's life.Marseille's 158 kills by Sept 30 1942 all against allied pilots, his idiosyncratic flying style, 17 kills in one day, and an average of 14 bullets per kill probably make him the greatest fighter pilot of all time and maybe the greatest combat pilot after Rudel. He also died after an engine failure, rather than being shot down.Kurowski provides a great chronicle of Marseille's life! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Vague and inconclusive
I bought the book because I am looking for a blue water cruiser to take me round the World.
4-0 out of 5 stars A chapter from the Old Testament of sailing
This collection of articles by a Cruising Club of America committee of the surviving gods of 20th-century sailing, especially the venerable Olin Stephens, lays down the dogmas of bluewater sailing design and safety as they were agreed upon by these worthies at the close of the century.Their lament at the undue influence of racing design on consumer cruising boats is commendably progressive, but otherwise the material is a chronicling of their conservative preferences in traditional equipment. The chapter on anchors takes a step backward, recommending as the primary anchor the fisherman, a design not in production even in 1987 (based on the author's experiences in 1962!); 4 of the 5 boats in the chapter on good designs were custom models not affordable to the general public, letting us all know where we (and they) stand in the class structure of sailing.Read this material for its intrinsic value and recover your sense of modernity by having a go at Garry Hoyt's book "Ready about", which is the New Testament and road map to the 21st century future of sailing.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
Whether you are a novice about to buy your first boat or an old salt who wants to add a little more practical knowledge, this is an excellent book. Some of the recommendations may seem like overkill for the casual weekend sailor, but it is best to be prepared, if not in equipment then at least in knowledge, for the worst conditions. There is a big difference in knowing and not knowing how much your boat falls short of ideal preparation. This book could give you a sense of where to set the standard. ... Read more
