5-0 out of 5 stars Good, salfe cleaning
This book has wonderful ideas about using commonly available items such as witch hazel and petroleum jelly to clean and maintain your boat. Our dock neighbors were so impressed at the cleaning ability of the concoctions this book recommends that everyone now has a squirt bottle of the stuff for their boats. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not only saves time, Saves Money
My first experience was with the deck wash. The stuff that I was using cost about $10 per bottle. The deck wash that I made from the book worked just as well and it cost me under a dollar to make.I haven't even gone in depth yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
Excellent read, many money saving tips, really appreciate the fact many of the recommendations are organically based and non harmful to the environment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book of line drawings ! (010)
Unlike most books on warships, which tend to focus on areas such as it's service history and technical specifications, which this book does cover, here is a fantastic collection of line drawings. I have several books featuring comprehensive line drawings of aircraft, but I had never seen such a book dedicated to a ship before. The author, a Polish modelmaker by the name of Janusz Skulski, has produced a book of such depth it will astound you. The 3-view plans are accompanied by great descriptive keys, and range from the entire hull and superstructure, liteally right down to individual nuts and bolts. The technical specifications are detailed and the photos, while necessarily brief because hardly any were ever taken of the Yamato, are very imformative. I can not stress enough how impressed I was with the level of detail, it was like looking at the original blueprints!
4-0 out of 5 stars Painstakingly reverse-engineered drawings
The Anatomy series will be very familiar with naval history enthusiasts. What makes this special is that all drawings and pictures of these huge ships were ordered destroyed just before the Japanese surrender. Thus the pictorial section is understandably a little briefer than usual, while the drawings section contains many that were painstakingly reverse engineered from the study of photos.
3-0 out of 5 stars A fine book, but not sure why I got it now.
OK, now that I have this book, I'm not sure why I got it.Maybe I should sell it since it seems to have gone out of print again and the used versions have skyrocketed in price! My copy is still in mint condition (barely opened!).Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Arts of the Sailor: Knotting, Splicing and Ropework
Good informative book in the areas of knotting and ropework but lacks information on splicing weaves. Only shows how to splice twists. Halyards on my boat are weaves as are on most sailboats and therefore I'll have to obtain this information elsewhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprensive Modern Yacht Design Reference
This is one of the best modern references on the topic of sailing yacht design.Highly recommended for anyone planing to design a sail boat.I personally would put more emphasis on optimizing the prismatic coefficient as a function of design speed.I would also make the book larger and include more information on power boats, various piping systems and electrical systems.

3-0 out of 5 stars A reasonable introduction...
This publication can be summed up as a reasonable introduction into conventional "modern" yacht design. However, it seems to be tailored towards amateur boat builders or even the keen sailor. A lot of ground is covered, but it only scratches the surface on many subjects. But perhaps this is all one should expect from a publication that only claims to cover the "principles" of yacht design. In my opinion as a naval architect, the book seems to lack depth and scientific data that could make it an interesting read or reference work for the professional.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Design Guide
The second edition of this book is an excellent step by step guide to both power and sail design. The book is written by a professor and professional yacht designer, that provide both excellent science and practical experience.

2-0 out of 5 stars Rather dated material
I started out with a mean review of this book, but then I started to feel guilty, so will keep it simple. This is clearly a 1970's style production, and the choice of images, image quality, etc. reflect it. If that was your time, and you like that sort of thing, by all means go for it. If your looking for well shot images of exceptional yacht interiors or ideas for a restoration project (like me) then keep looking or get if from a library first to decide if its worth owning. As someone who is willing to look at pictures of almost anything nautical, I found it pretty disappointing - mostly because it is so out of date and unprofessional by modern standards. There are a few classic yacht images worth seeing, but much of it is run-of-the-mill boat interiors of the day. I regret being so harsh because I'm sure a lot of work went into this in its day, but in my opinion, it is time to let go.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and very helpful to my own liveaboard experience.
While I do not own a copy personally, I have repeatedly borrowed this book from the local library. Now someone else has permanently "borrowed" it, and I will need to buy a copy!I have found it to unparalleled in providing information and inspiration in my first years as a liveaboard aboard a 30' sailboat. While I could never hope to own a boat like most of the ones shown in this book, the photos and text take me right inside the boats and lives of their owners, helping me find my own comfort level and validating my own desires and needs below decks.A friend to me for years, I cannot say enough about it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source of information
My fiance is in the Navy and he bought me a copy of this when I went to see him pass-in-review. He told me that it would answer a lot of my questions I might have had- well it has! I learned about differnt ships, all of the information on Tricare (the Navy's insurance), dependents...you name it, it's in there! If you've got a loved one in the Navy (child, spouse, fiance/e, girlfriend/boyfriend, sibling, etc.) I suggest this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars What you need to know
Similar to other books in the series. Style wise, this is the opposite of The Sailmaker's Apprentice by Marino. This is not a book to pick up while sitting by the fire sipping tea. It is a great reference book with concise "how to" information. Good explanations of both materials and techniques - including safety.

5-0 out of 5 stars For beginners to experts!
We recently lucked into a wonderful Grampian 26 in great shape, and were even luckier to have located this and the other Don Casey books! Even though it is still very much winter here, I'm chomping at the bit to start preparing the boat for the water.Casey's books are a must for any yacht owner!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book.
THis is a wonderful book. So many photographs telling his life story. This is a must book fro any person who likes history.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mislead
I purchased this book after hearing about Hans Ulrich Rudel some years ago, I actually thought the book was going to be a full story about the man, but the book has mainly photo's so aout five the photo's rate a 5/5 but the biography 2/5

3-0 out of 5 stars A Great Historical Account Tarnished
I found this book to be both facinating and detailed. Rudel's bravery and skill can not be debated. I came away from the book with a better understanding of how and why the Germans fought. Rudel writes effectively that the German fighting man was fighting for his family and country--not the ideals of the Nazi party and derived his courage from his comrades. Towards the end of the war, he claimed to have known nothing of the Nazi attrocities that were committed upon the Jews and many other ethnic groups.

The other reviews say all: THIS BOOK IS FANTASTIC!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars For love of Blackbird and country
If Brian Shul could ever hope to match the masterful style of Sled Driver, I believe he has done it with this book. All Brian's books are wonderful, but there is space reserved in my heart for reading about the wildperformance of the SR-71. With help from his backseater, the tech reps, engineers and various others, he has succeeded in lofting us again to 80000feet at mach 3.5, this time across Qaddafi's Line of Death for a veryspecial mission, which only the Blackbird could complete with impunity.Filled with great photography and a teriffic story, this one has found aplace of honor in my library to be read again and again. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent aircraft history
A "must read" for anyone who appreciates the F-8 (or wants to) or just loves military aviation.A thorough history of this amazing airplane and those who flew it through a collection of great first-hand fighter pilot's stories. Some are told from the author's own experience and many more from other Crusader pilots interviewed by the author. For example: John Glenn's record-breaking flight in his own words, along with many accounts of Vietnam MiG encounters.I loved this book and plan on reading much more by this author.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Cannot Recommend This Book Highly Enough
This is a fantastic collection of pilot's stories dealing with the"Last of the Gunfighters" the Vought F-8 Crusader.Rear AdmiralPaul T Gillcrist has 2000 hours of Crusader time and his impressiveknowledge and affection for the aircraft is very apparent throughout. Thefirst part of the book arms the reader with background knowledge of earlyjet carrier operations as well as the story of Crusader speed records. Thebulk of the book deals with the experiences, both harrowing and amusing, ofnumerous Crusader pilots including fascinating interviews with each pilotto shoot down a MiG in the aircraft. The final chapters give the author'sexpert analysis of the air war in Vietnam, and an overview of the use ofthe aircraft by the French Navy, the Naval Reserve and NASA. The book doesnot suffer from the shortfall of other books in that it is very skilfullywritten so that a layman can imagine theirself in the thick of the action. After reading this book you are left with a great respect for the men ofthe US Navy and Marine Corps who flew and fought in the Crusader andoperated the aircraft from small aircraft carriers. As a commercial pilot Ican only wonder how I would cope with landing a Mach2 airplane on a smallheaving 27C carrier deck at night. To these men it was routine. Anyone whois remotely interested in aviation will find this book a great asset totheir collection and I cannot recommend it highly enough ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Manual
Except for having to jump around to find things, I was able to rebuild my Johnson 110 hp motor with it and it runs great. This is the first time I ever tried to do this and without the manual, I would have been lost. There were a few things that I had to figure out myself, but all in all this manual helped a great deal. I would recomment it to those wishing to try it as I did.

Typical of Clymer outboard manuals-I have found this manual very useful.I'm not that mechanical and I appreciate the manual's attention to detail and for the numerous pictures and diagrams.

2-0 out of 5 stars My opinion
I feel the book was written ok...just OK. I feel the biggest problem is that its too broad. Just when you are finally figuring out what your reading... its about the wrong engine size or year. I will have to admitthat its probably as good as its going to get for a repair manual notbought from the dealer. Bottom line good for info, just not for a rebuild ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Or how to BUILD a Cruising Sailboat?
I eagerly added this book to my wish list based on it's title and found that what was inside the book was less about selecting your ideal cruising sailboat than it was about selecting a custom design, or perhaps directing the construction of your custom dream boat.
3-0 out of 5 stars A good book about sailboat design
I was looking for a book that would help me select a cruising sailboat, as the title suggested. This is really a book about sailboat design and design features that must be considered for different types of cruising. The book was very interesting in terms of boat design, as it lays out the "design thinking" and use-specific features in the design of five different boat types. Because we already know exactly what sort of cruising we intend to do, this book didn't get us very much further down the "choosing a boat" path. It is, however, useful in terms of helping evaluate used boats and their design features based on the important features of his "model" designs. This book will educate, but won't necessarily help you choose from the wide range of used boats that are out there. The Used Boat Guide "from the pages of Sailing Magazine" is an excellent choice if that's the sort of help you're looking for. I give it three stars only because the title is a bit misleading - a better title might be "Choosing the Right Cruising Sailboat DESIGN".

1-0 out of 5 stars Choosing a Cruising Sailboat???
My review is simply that this book was mis-titled. It should have read Designing a Cruising Sailboat not Choosing. It speaks less of real boats and more about 4-5 mythical boats of which the author walks you through the design process of.If you've got lots of cash and want to see your custom design come to life this book may be for you.The author even goes so far as to say that proper boat maintenance starts when you visit your boat builder while your boat is being built and blah blah...at this point I considered the book a loss. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great photography, broad sweep of history, but uninspiring prose.
This is a very nice, broad look at lots of cockpit interiors and aircraft exteriors. It's not as good as Nijboer and Patterson's Cockpits of the Cold War, but I found the pictures very clear and devoid of the overly-dramatic (and obscuring) artsy-fartsy photography typical of aviation history books.
5-0 out of 5 stars Get in the Cockpit and Fly
If you love aircraft, this is a book for you !The photography of the cockpits is stunning. The information about the control and instruments of flying from the day Wright Brothers, to the Spirit of St. Louis, the Warbirds of WW II, to today's SpacecraftRead more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent technical manual
This has tons of great information about the repair and maintenance, though the pictures are dated and not all close enough to see the details of what is being illustrated.I would recommend this for the weekend hobby person to skilled mechanic to assist in any work on this model of outboard.

2-0 out of 5 stars not good for beginners
I found the text to be very unclear for inexperienved mechanics. The instructions say things like "remove the middle and outer cowlings"without explaining what the cowlings are.The picture associated with the instruction step then just shows a picture of the motor without identifying the part in question.
3-0 out of 5 stars Too broad
Overall not a bad book, found it to be very general in a few key area; this would be due to such a large range of models covered.Next time I may look at the OEM manual; for a comparission. ... Read more
