5-0 out of 5 stars I'm not a radar expert, but with this book I COULD BE!!!
Mr. Stimson's book, "Introduction to Airborne Radar (2nd Edition)," has been one of my most treasured purchases from my graduate school education. I expected a book filled with equations and bad graphs and tables - I was wonderfully surprised by the high quality graphics, easy to follow mathematical treatment, and historical views into past and present radar systems.
5-0 out of 5 stars No other introduction needed
Stimson's second edition is a slight improvement over his first. "Slight" because improving near perfection remains a difficult task. Nowhere else is such clarity apparent in the complex field of radars. Thanks to Stimson this subject could be understood by my grandmother. If only Stimson would carry edition three to the next echelon, extending depth and detail to levels required to actually build and make a working, modern radar. Like applying his talent to the intricacies of adaptive processing, a completion of SAR computational demands and processes (vs. stopping at the digital filter FFT), nuances of ever more important phase noise, test, measurement and producibility of radar systems that shouldn't cost a million dollars per copy, but a fraction of this with proper processes and synergistic integration vs. the "Mister Potato Head" approach of slapping together the latest-greatest-of-every-subsystem-technology still practiced by engineers in just about everything. Unfortunately this may be our last version from Stimson as he's no longer a young man and such efforts are monumental. Even so, he's made himself a national asset creating this magnificent edition, probably lasting longer than any of us in the field today.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not easy reading
I bought this book because I work with radar and would like to improve my understanding of it. This book is a good middle ground, but for a dummy like me, several chapters require re-reads.One of the most annoying things is that when the author describes related material, he doesn't compare and contrast as much as write one paragraph on the attributes of thing A and then another paragraph on thing B using all but two words that were used in the first paragraph. The reader must wade through this writing and then compare and contrast themself.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One Hand For Yourself, One Hand For The Ship
THE ANNAPOLIS BOOK OF SEAMANSHIP by John Rousmaniere is the ur-text on sailing used by virtually every sailing school as its primary educational source. Now in its third edition, this eminently readable and well illustrated book is encyclopedic in its scope, crammed full of practical information about sailing vessels, the mechanics of sailing them, and the traditions of sailing. It's a measure of the excellence of THE ANNAPOLIS BOOK OF SEAMANSHIP how familiarly Rousmaniere presents this largely alien topic with its many very specialized terms of art.
4-0 out of 5 stars Has good info...
This book has some pretty good info and is quite comprehensive and well laid out.If you're going to buy 1 book, let it be this one. That's if you ever get around to reading it (it being so comprehensive and all) it's almost easier to go out sailing than trawl through it's many pages! But a worthwhile reference.

Stumm and Morgan remains the best aquatic chemical book ever written.3-0 out of 5 stars Reference Yes, Teaching Text, No
This book is an excellent reference text for people who already know something about aquatic chemistry. It contains more material and covers more topics than any other book in the field. As a teaching text, however, it is severely lacking.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book for chem. & physics of nat. systems

1-0 out of 5 stars Panama Cruising Guide by Eric Bauhaus
The zydler guide was ok in its time. But the new Panama Cruising Guide by Eric Bauhaus is very, very much better than the Zydler. ALL PAGES IN COLOR, beautyful photos and nearly 200 precise charts. Dont dream of cruising panama without it.

2-0 out of 5 stars New Panama Cruising Guide by Eric Bauhaus is way better
We just finished (July 2006) cruising the Pacific side of Panama and through the canal and found the Zydler guide to not be as useful as the newer Bauhaus guide. The major difference is in the charts & chartlets - the Bauhaus guide is all color charts that look like real charts - the Zydler guide is all B&W hand drawn sketches that are extremely hard to read - virtually useless. The Zydler guide has more words but less useful information as it's quite a bit older and some information isway out of date - eg. the Western Panama Islands like Coiba.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical
Working your way through the more theoretical books on explosives by, say, Cooper or Zukas and Walters, is fine, but you will be left wanting for a simple, practical guy's knowledge of explosives technolgoy.Cooper's Intro book is the book for you.You might even want to start with this book before going off to the more advanced books. If the math is lacking, the essence of the theory is fairly well captured by Cooper's exposition, and there are plenty of photographs, figures and tables to help you get the ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indespensible boat manual
I'm not talking about yachting type books. I have owned and operated commercial fishing boats in Alaska, for over 30 years. And this book demystifies bonding, grounding, AC boat wiring, lightning protection, a whole chapter just on batteries, and that's just the electrical part of the book. If your unsure about some aspect of your boat's electrical system or machinery, and are walking the docks trying to find out something about them, GET THIS BOOK. Some of that BS one hears on the dock can sink you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good
I used this book for a graduate course in marine hydrodynamics.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good
Extremely well-written, readable. Here, you can learn about airfoil (hydrofoil) theory in detail, all the way through induction effects (drag and change of angle of inflow). I read it to understand outboard racing propellers. There's is no tractable theory of the latter because of asymmetry, and because racing propellers are surfacing propellers. So you learn what you can from airfoil theory and the rest is engineering via the seat of the pants, try something and then test it to see how it works. I did that for 9 years and set 3 APBA OPC speed records along with winning 6 National Championships, so the method worked pretty well in practice for me but left the most interesting questions about what propellers are doing unanswered. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for boat building!
I bought this book because I wanted to prepare myself for building a boat in 2007, next year.In reading through it, I learned that what is covered is not just how to build a boat, but really more about how to finish a boat.
4-0 out of 5 stars A useful lecture
I found in the book a useful collection of practical information. It is an usefull lecture before starting the construction of a boat and even before selecting a design plan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest swordsmith?
This is the book which introduce many people outside Japan to understand modern Japanese sword making. It also helped Yoshindo Yoshihara to become one of the most recogniseble face amongst swordmakers in the West. Even so one must point out that although Yoshindo is very highly ranked in Japan he is by no means the finest swordmaker as we speak. His brother Shoji Yoshihara (who appeared in the Last Samurai)is considered more skillful and he is not alone amongst swordsmiths. However one cannot underestimate the contribution the author and Yoshindo san has made for swords by being involved in this wonderful publication.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book but missing key information
This book has LOTS of really good information. But it is missing some significant stuff, Brion.PLEASE PLEASE do another addition and include SOME information about the following:
5-0 out of 5 stars The Thoughts of a REAL RIGGER
As a rigger myself, i thoroughly enjoyed this book and found it most informative and useful for my trade. However, there was little or no mention of brews OR 3 leets - surely this is an integral part of being a RIGGER? Also, there is only one rigger.5-0 out of 5 stars The only thing like it for traditional craft
Brion Toss has become "da man" in modern rigging in many ways, and a lot of that is attributable to this great book. It's a big, thick thing, loaded with information, not all of it easily absorbed on the first read. It's meant to give you a firm grounding in what rigging is, what it does, and how to inspect and maintain your own rig, how to adjust it, how to replace worn sections. Will it tell you everything you need to know to design a rig from the ground up on a serious racing yacht?Heck, no.It isn't meant to.What this book does is give you the tools you need to approach your own rig without fear and trembling - to realize that, after all, it's just a bunch of parts, and that you can comprehend and work with those parts, understand their roles, and get the most from your boat. Will you be forever independant of professional riggers?Probably not.But it goes a long way toward making that a realizable goal, if you apply yourself. And it should be known that this book is especially strong on traditional rigs, the more traditional the better. You'll learn how to worm, parcel, and serve, how to lace deadeyes, and why galvanized is great and stainless isn't stainless. And if that last sentence frightens you, you're probably not in the intended demographic.Rod rigging and carbon fiber masts are mentioned, at best, in passing, and largely for comic relief.Keep that in mind.Makes an absolutely perfect companion to Marino's "Sailmaker's Apprentice." ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Dust Collector
Good intentions but no substance. If you own an outboard, you know that each size and brand are quite unique and generalizing the repairs of them is about as useful to an owner as a dry lake. This book is very small and it WILL collect dust or end up beneath a repair manual. Believe me.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview- but buy the service manual too
This book provides a thorough explanation of the workings of 2-stroke & 4-stroke outboard engines, with conscientious troubleshooting guides & meticulous maintenance schedules. However, it works best as a companion to the service manual (not the general Owners Manual, but the Service Manual) for your specific model.Consider the number of outboard engine types and it's easy to see that diagrams and descriptions included are necessarily generic. If you're the kind of person who likes to know the theory behind the black box before fixing anything, order this & the manual. If you just want to learn how to clean your carburetor, call your manufacturer & get the manual.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great info for 99% of outboard owners
I'm not quite sure what the reviewer from Raleigh, N.C. expected from this book. It is clearly not written with the intent of teaching you how to tear down and rebuild outboard motors. The editor's review above clearly says that. But If you are looking for a good common sense all-round outboard motor troubleshooting guide, then this book, combined with the specific shop manual for your motor, some moderately cheap test equipment (which you may have a lot of already) and anyone with a descent mechanical aptitude will probably be able to fix 90% of all the problems they will ever encounter with an outboard motor. The other 10% I personally will leave to the pros. It will also teach you how to avoid a lot of problems in the first place which is the biggest savings when your talking outboards. I am just a hobbyist, not a mechanic and this book has already helped me get two old motors back up and running and has been well worth its price to me. The book is well organized and is easy to understand. The author keeps things simple and down to earth and isn't trying to impress anyone with a bunch of techno-jargon. Sure the text could have been larger, maybe the pictures a little better, but hey what's perfect for everyone? ... Read more

Since the current U.S. Administration saw fit to cease publication of CHART NO. 1, the government's own guide to reading maritime maps, back in 2000 (maybe they figured Dubai might pick up the slack around our harbors), HOW TO READ A NAUTICAL CHART is an absolutely crucial educational volume for those of us new to reading charts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just the facts
Style wise, this is the opposite of The Sailmaker's Apprentice by Marino. This is not a book to pick up while sitting by the fire sipping tea. It is a great reference book with concise "how to" information. I have a friend who told me that there is nothing beyand repair on a fiberglass boat. After reading this book, I'm beginning to belive him. Good explanations of both materials and techniques - including safety.

5-0 out of 5 stars Go ahead and get the grinder!
A sweet book that gave me the confidence to 'go for it' and tackle some ugly holes in my dinghy hull. What's more it was not that bad after all! It's all here, from finishing the gelcoat scrapes/cracks to repairing gaping holes- you may want to buy in conjunction with 'sailboat refinishing' to help with that final effort. Fully recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent technical history of the Tiger II
Thomas Jentz and artist/collaborator Hillary Louis Doyle have created an excellent technical overview of the development and production modifications of the Tiger II "King Tiger," using only originaldocumentation and actual preserved vehicles as references. There is nosecond-hand information of any kind, and no propagation of postwar myths. There is less pure engineering information than the earlier work by WalterSpielberger (i.e. don't expect diagrams of the inner workings of engine andtransmissions), but the intended audience for this book is clearly themodel-builder. The numerous drawings are to the popular modeler's scale of1/35th, and numerous detail photos will aid the would-be model builder. Incombination with such works as Wolfgang Schneider's "Tigers inCombat," you would have an ideal library on the King Tiger. However, this volume does not cover the Jagdtiger tank destroyer (Schiffer doespublish a two-volume work on this vehicle by another author).

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent case study of the Tiger Ausf. B.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every JEEP restorer needs a copy

5-0 out of 5 stars The Mosin-Nagant Rifle (For Collectors Only)
Great book, lots of detail, great history on the rifle.Very organized.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well done
As a long time collector of the Mosin Nagant rifle and also having my research on these rifles in a number of different Medias, I am pleased to say Terence has done a fine job with his works on the Mosin Nagant.I think all new collectors should have this book as a guide and even long time collectors will find the book helpful. The author covers a lot of ground in this book so it is hard to be overly detailed but too be honest a definitive work on the Mosin Nagant would run into thousands of pages.I am glad to have been able to assist the author in the past and hope to do more in the future.A+

2-0 out of 5 stars So-so as collectors go...
Lots of information... Not many photos. Mostly line drawings. Instead of going in chronilogical order, he goes by parts... Stock, sights, barrel, etc. This is very difficult to try to date any weapons. I think the book was written because most Nagants are made up of parts from various years. Still, I think it would be nice if he had started with photos of the earliest model versions and then discussed all the various parts. Just an opinion. ... Read more
