5-0 out of 5 stars Great NEW edition
The authors, in their new 6th edition of Mechanical Measurements, have overhauled most of the book. The new edition is much improved and makes great reference book for various measurement techniques.Very well-indexed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth Keeping
This text provides a good, basic overview of methods for measuring several physical phenomena. The treatment of most of these is average. However, thermal measurement is given an improved, more thorough coverage.Personally, I have primarily used this text as a reference and guide for Chapter 3: Assessing and Presenting Experimental Data.I have found the sections on Error and, especially, Uncertainty to be very instructive and practical for use during college and post-graduation (as a mechanical engineer in research and development).

2-0 out of 5 stars Try another measurements book.
This book was assigned to me as part of a college mechanical engineering course. This book was hard to follow and strayed from the course description. It contains aspects of electronics and mechanical design where the math problems are not fully explained and worked out and the machine descriptions are extremely brief. It is possible to get an education out this book, but a person would really have to strain. If you buy this book, I recommend that you get a generic study guide to accompany it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars MOST EASY METHOD
Having been an Industrial Engineer and Management Consultant for many years I am allways sceptical when a "new" tecnique is launched. It was in this frame of mind that I approached MOST. What a revelation, not new as such as it is based on the original tried and trusted MTM system, however it is a fresh approach, and a welcome one at that! Here is a systemwhich is statisticaly accurate, quick to apply, and easy to understand. Moreimportantly it encourages method development and improvement. As arecommendation I would encourage everyone in this field of operation toread this book and consider its application. I did and have just completedthe approved training and certification course. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!!!
It was everything I expected it to be , but more. I definately rate this a 100%.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Approach to a New Form of Product Testing
Alex Porter has given the reader an easy to follow explanation of accelerated stress testing (AST), when to use it, the possible choices available and when each choice should be applied.Rather than concentrating on the equations that describe statistical reliability, as most previous texts have done, Alex describes this new approach in straight-forward prose. The result is a story that can be followed by new-to-the-field product developers, as well as by older, more experienced engineers. The first three chapters would be especially valuable to Managers, as they define when data is actually information, the time value of information and when the application of accelerated test methods is most important. Several chapters detail the variety of available accelerated testing techniques, together with the pros and cons of each. The last few chapters introduce a new concept - the Hypothesis Matrix - which is derived from a detailed DFMEA and a knowledge of AST methods, arriving at a way to answer a primary question of new product development - "what will break this product and how?"The book is filled with interesting theory, examples and antidotes to lead the reader to subject knowledge and comprehension. It is an excellent counterpoint to the more traditional texts, and priced to be available to everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hands-On Accelerated Testing
If you're looking for practical accelerated test methods for the real world, then this book is for you.I work with Alex Porter at Intertek ETL Entela, and have edited many of his technical papers. He has extensive knowledge of a variety of test methods, and he writes technical material in a manner that is very user-friendly and easy to understand (even for someone in Marketing!). There is no pie-in-the-sky engineering theory here, just hands-on test methods. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great companion volume to Applied Life Data Analysis
I agree with the previous reviewer that this is the definitive classic in accelerated life testing. It's a great companion volume to Dr. Nelson's "Applied Life Data Analysis" which remains one of the best reliability textbooks ever written. I have noticed that all major reliability and accelerated testing programs use this book as their main reference - proof of the books usefulness. My only compaint is with the publishers for the steep price - now that they're bringing out a lower cost version of Applied Life Data Analysis, I hope they'll bring out a low-cost or paperback version of this classic as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars best statistical account of accelerated testing
Nelson is a private consultant who has worked on countless practical problems in reliability from his consulting practice and previous employment at General Electric. He is an excellent lecturer and writer. His earlier book "Applied Life Data Analysis" was considered to be one of the best texts on reliability.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent but dated
As all the other reviewers have noted, this is an excellent book. I used it for a class I taught on LabVIEW and both the students and I liked the book. The problem is that it was written for LabVIEW 5. There is a 32 page online update available for the many changes between version 5 and 6.1 but that was a pain and even that is now two years out of date. (To get it, do a Google search for "John Essick" then go to his home page and follow the obvious link.) You had to keep remembering to refer to the update list or you had to go through the book and make notes that would remind you to see the updates.
5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING book to learn LabView basics
This book is a fantastic hands-on introduction to LabView, probably the best book on this topic a beginner can find. It is extremely clearly written, very well edited (i.e., there are practically no mistakes), and it has excellent illustrations for each step in the process of building VIs. 5-0 out of 5 stars Start here!
I needed a new software platform for data acquisition following the demise of an older platform. All of my friends at various national laboratories were using LabVIEW so it was a natural choice.I then started looking for a "directed tutorial" that would get me up to speed for data acquisition without first mastering the vast multitude of LabVIEW features (until I really needed them).I found Essick's book to be head and shoulders above the other novice-level books I tried (which were helpful but were taking too long). My undergraduate research students now first encounter LabVIEW with the guidance of this clear, concise, and well-written book.It would also be my first choice as a textbook for a class on LabVIEW (or on data acquisition techniques in general). I recommend this book very highly. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good introduction to measurement
Much of the engineering curriculum is devoted to analytical techniques for solving particular problems, often derived mathematically from first principles. However, without grounding results within the physical realm, solutions may neglect factors that do not neatly fit into the assumptions used. Thus, measurement of phenomena are needed. But what constitutes a valid measurement?Holman provides an excellent introductionto this area in _Experimental_Methods_for_Engineers_, often an otherwise neglected field of study.Few parameters can be measured directly, and those that can must be compared to a standard that is ubiquitously available and repeatable. So Holman begins with standards and units.Analysis of measured data covers sources of error and uncertainty -- without these, the measurement cannot be used with confidence for the application intended.5-0 out of 5 stars Complete Recipe for Engineering Experimentation
I have reviewed several books in engineering experimentation to adopt oneof them to my course.Among them, this book is most complete and provideslots of useful information nicely organized. One of the strengthes thisbook provides is the "recipe" for various enigneering experimentswith excellent summary. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wide-Ranging Perspectives on Measurement
This book's strongest point, in my opinion, is the engaging way in which it was written. Writing on a topic that has the potential of being rather boring to many people because of its subject matter, the author, using a very friendly and chatty style, has produced a book that is fascinating to the point of being difficult to put down. The fields and disciplines that are discussed, always with measurement as the focus, are quite wide-ranging, as one would expect, and topical. In discussing so many diverse disciplines, the author has succeeded admirably in portraying the subject of measurement as a science and as an art, i.e., from many different angles. Because the areas discussed are so diverse, this book is sure to have something of interest for everyone. Because of the fact that we are all subjected to many forms of measurement and that measurement in some form or other is an important part of all of our daily lives, I recommend this book to one and all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Discusses different forms of measurement, how they're translated in society, and where they fail
DOES MEASUREMENT MEASURE UP? HOW NUMBERS REVEAL & CONCEAL THE TRUTH should be required reading for any serious high school to college-level course in math or statistics: it discusses different forms of measurement, how they're translated in society, and where they fail. From intelligence measuring to measurement of environment hazards and sports, chapters discuss yesterday's records, today's measurement systems, and areas for foggy interpretation of results.
