The world is behaving strangely these days: grassfires rage across millions of acres in Texas and Mongolia, heat waves kill hundreds in Milwaukee and Bombay, floods ravage North Dakota and Oman. Ross Gelbspan, a veteran journalist, seizes on these and other alarming examples to argue that global warming is fast upon us--and, more to the point, that the multitrillion-dollar energy concerns are doing their best to keep the world public from knowing about widespread changes in the global climate caused, in part, by the fossil fuel-induced destruction of the ozone layer. The Heat is On
An excellent updated companion book by a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist to "The Next One Hundred Years: Shaping the Fate of Our Living Earth"[1991], by Jonathan Weiner, another Pulitzer Prize winning author. A Pulitzer-prizewinning author excels in this one!
Minority viewpoints among U.S. scientists have too much influence onpolicy, Gelbspan reports.He provides evidence that other countries haveinvested in alternative energy sources, i.e. geothermal, solar, and windenergy, which have helped to reduce pollution.Exposes industry frontgroups, e.g. "Information Council on the Environment" that givethe appearance of uncertainty within the scientific community.

Gelbspan offers insight into science & politics of warming

Fantastic book
I recently purchased Monsson by Steve MCurry. Monssons are really very special in India and the way he has captured monsoon in our part of the world is really an example ofsuperb documentary and camera work. Im really learning from this book.

If I hadn't seen South Southeast, I'd have given thi 5 stars
This is a tremendously diverse collection of photographs, both geographically and culturally, and Steve McCurry is one of my personal heroes as a photographer.That said, the relatively poorer reproduction quality and maturity of the pictures looks shabby compared to his magnificent new portfolio book, 'South Southeast', and the unbelievable value of 'Portraits', both professionally printed by Phaidon Press.I don't think there are a crew of color prepress technicians in the world that can outdo Phaidon's, and that is the ONLY reason I am not giving this fine book a perfect score -- McCurry has proven since its publication that he was capable of even greater glory.(If you don't already have it, buy Portraits TODAY -- it is an incredible value!)

Concise and efficient
This is an engrossing book by Garratt, it is concise and efficient. The first chapters give the reader a captivating introductory overview of what the boundary layer is about. It is a great book that could be used by both graduate and undergraduate students.

Not impressed
I was forced to buy this book as a text for my boundary layer meteorology course.At first I thought it was great because it was probably one of the only texts on teh market that was less than $100.After reading it through and studying it in considerable depth I can honestly say it was one of the worst texts I have ever seen.Proper derivations were lacking and the explanation of Monin-Obukhov Similarity Theory, a central topic in the study of boundary layer dynamics, was very poor.Granted that the text is aimed at a graduate level course, it is expected to be more complex, but the oversight of not including any well though-out physical descriptions of boundary layer processes makes this book a near failure. For the serious student
Garratt's book is an elegant and concise mathematical introduction to the atmospheric boundary layer. If you are new to the subject this is one of the books you want to start with. The other is Stull's comprehensive "Introduction to Boundary Layer Meteorology". At $40, Garratt's book is by far the better bargain, but if you are serious about learning the subject both books complement each other nicely. ... Read more

good introduction
I took Prof. Jacob's undergraduate class in atmospheric chemistry at Harvard.Not surprisingly, this was the book we used.Overall it is well written and a good introduction to the field, and is relatively inexpensive for a textbook. An excellent addition to the field
I used Prof. Jacob's pre-press web edition of this book to teach 20+ bachelor's students Atmospheric Chemistry at the University of Copenhagen during the fall of 1999.I have found it difficult to find an appropriateintroductory level text for this class, and have usually been borrowingmaterial for the class from four or five other books.The book is wellwritten and a pleasure to read, but the real treat are the problems at theend of each chapter.Jacob has scoured the literature and illustratesimportant points in each chapter using recent advances in the field.Thestudents and their instructor learned a great deal from the author'sinsightful choice of topics.The book reflects the author's perspective ofthe field, and is longer on atmospheric physics and shorter on chemistrythan the title implies.I would have liked more information on aerosols,and the students definitely would have liked more introductory material onchemistry.Overall I would recommend this book to professionals interestedin learning more about global warming or ozone depletion, and to teacherslooking for a good book for bachelors or new graduate students. ...
