Changes in climate have been important determinants in evolution on Earth. As well as dealing with contemporary climate issues, this reference also describes how data from rocks, ice cores, ocean sediments, etc. is used to deduce the history of the planet's history of climate. This reference gives atmospheric O2 as a percent of present value at 1% at 2 billion years B.P., 10% at 700 million years B.P. and 100% at 350 million years B.P. Ice ages are given at 2.3 billion years B.P., 950 million years B.P., 820 - 730 million years B.P., 640 - 580 million years B.P., brief glaciation at 430 million years B.P. Fascinating history and background
Every spring I have a craving for information about meteorology and severe weather.This book satisfies that craving.It is filled with the author's many beautiful photographs of storm clouds, funnels, tornadoes, etc.What I found most fascinating was the information on the history of storm research and storm chasing.It is impressive to learn how much has been discovered in only the last 50 years or so.It was interesting to realize how little about severe weather was known early in the 20th century, and how the pioneers of meteorological research began their investigations to establish the information we now take for granted during everyday weather newscasts.
Tornado Alley - suffers a bit from a split personality
Prof. Bluestein is one of the world's premier storm photographers, and the images alone make this book worthwhile.From where I sit, the book tries to combine the imagery with meteorology lessons that a few readers might find useful but many will probably find them pitched at too high a level to be of much value.The book is apparently trying to combine a "coffee table" content with meteorology lessons, an arguably overambitious goal.I was also disappointed that many of the images are printed too small or even in b&w.Otherwise, the image reproduction is excellent.

For Those Curious About Storms
This book is written so that anyone can (with a little thought) understand the concepts discussed in it.However, this is not to say the book is a bore for the weather enthusiast--quite the contrary, this is the audience it will satisfy most.Read more

Best technical book that I have read!
I recently purchased this book from www.amazon.com (it wasn't available on www.amazon.ca for some reason) and it is absolutely the best technical book that I have ever read.Everything is explained very simply and very clearly. Became interested in this story after seeing a short documentary about Captain Burke and his Windjammer Co on travel channel.He seems to haunted to this day by this tragedy.The book is well written and I could picture the story in my mind as I read it.One has to wonder about their last minutes aboard this ship as they moved into the storms eye.Certainly recommend.

I was there
I was a passenger on that last trip the Fantone made.We spent only one night on board before being evacuated from Belize City.The Windjammer Corporation took very good care of us and chartered a jet to fly all the passengers and some of the crew from Belize City when they realized the severity of hurricaine Mitch.The book is a very accurate description of the events as I know them.I was so sad when I heard the outcome, having met most of the people who died.Even for me, the book was a great read. ...
