Don't buy it unless you have to!!!
As a college student I was forced to buy the textbook per my professor's curriculum and request. He often cited inaccuracies claiming he often had called the publisher to complain. The answers to the review questions (at the end of the chapters) were very challenging to find within the chapter. It's rough reading (I love to read and read often.) Unless you are required to buy the book, DON'T! I hope this helps.

The best intro to meteorology out there
If you are looking for a nice intro to weather or even a nice thorough review then this would be the book for you. Clearly defined and many illustrations available to help you grasp the info without reading it over several times.

An excellent introductory weather text.
Lutgens and Tarbuck made this a very readable text by writing in a stratightforward manner and by focusing on fundamental principles. The typical non-science major undergrad or general reader should be able to grasp the important concepts, while the more scientifically literate readers will find plenty of material to wrap their minds around. For example, much of the quantitative stuff is presented in separate boxes, for those who want to go beyond the basics as presented in the text. Practical, Coherent and Complete
This book can be used for several courses in environmental sciences or earth sciences. It covers all major topics, provides a complete overview of cross disciplinary fields and as such is an invaluable tool for students and teachers. I especially liked the mathematical introduction. Too many typos
It may be the so-called Bible of atmospheric science, but there are too many typos for my taste. Perhaps if you're just trying to remember what the proper equation is, it'd work better.
The Bible
As if this needs a review...its a bible for atomspheric scientists of all genre.A must have.Especially good for any grad student preparing for the random question during an oral exam.Not that you could read the thing cover to cover, but there is something for everyone. This book has it all.If you are in the field of atmospheric sciences, it is a muct have.If you're not in the field, but are interested in learning about atmospheric science, I'd highly recommend it.It's a technical book,with plenty of math, but it is written in an engaging, easy to read format. A hard book to categorize
This is Mr. Jacobson's latest update to his unique text on the mathematical modeling of the atmosphere. I think it would be impossible to fully utilize this book if you have not already mastered college level physics, organic chemistry, calculus, both ordinary and partial differential equations, and numerical analysis and have some knowledge of atmospheric science. There are plenty of computer projects spread throughout this book too, so I guess a further requirement would be familiarity with a programming language, preferably MATLAB. This book basically merges all of these fields together in order to develop numerical models of atmospheric behavior. In fact, it looks like it would be a tough read for anyone who is not a graduate student of both atmospheric science and mathematics. By cross-referencing this book's material with old textbooks I was able to get through chapter 5 OK, but I hit a wall when I got to the material on numerical solutions to partial differential equations in chapter six. My advice for scientists and engineers that need to know more about the atmosphere, meteorology, and the accompanying mathematics so that they can do some modeling but don't have the Ph.D. pedigree necessary to get the most out of this book might want to invest in two other particular volumes:

A heavy book with the most essential essentials
This book you can use to get a really good picture of what climate modelling really is. You should be somewhat into your studies and not a first year student. The book covers virtually every topic that is important if you want to build your own climate model. Do not try this, though; your PC cannot work with all the subsystems that are described in the volume. Following Schneiders 1982 book this is really guff! ... Read more

Leave it to an accomplished science writer like Hannah Holmes to unearth so much about so little. Zooming in on one of the great, often unnoticed constants of life on earth--dust, in all its myriad forms--Holmes traverses biology, astronomy, climatology, pathology, and host of other fields to dig up the serious dirt. Because whiledust might be vital to life on our planet (and may, in fact, even be responsible for it), this "heartless little brute" could also be responsible for the deaths of millions. Should I breath?
Makes you think about all of the things you are breathing into your body on a daily basis and what havoc or benefit these things may have for you.It is a very interesting book and made me a bit of a clean freak, of course, cleaning doesn't do too much good and seems only to cause all of the dust particles to dislodge for me to inhale.But, what can you do?I highly recommend the book.

some interesting bits, not compelling overall
Dust. There's a lot of it. We don't know much about it. If you want to hear that repeated for a couple hundred pages, buy this book. There's a lot of airy speculation and to be fair, there are a few interesting pieces of trivia thrown in... but for the most part, this book drags.
Take a deep breath . . .
Even in the "cleanest" house, your own "personal cloud" would have provided millions of invisible particles to inhale.Much of that fog will be your own cast off skin flakes.Your nose might filtre out the big ones.Others will have travelled along your bronchial tubes a way, to be picked up for delivery to your stomach.Yet others will elude the body's natural traps to drift into your lungs.Some will take up residence there, perhaps for good.And if your house is actually among those "cleanest" ones, it may not be good for your children.

Good introductory book on cloud physics
There are very few stand-alone cloud physics text books on the market.More often than not only a chapter is devoted to clouds in a general atmospheric sciences text book, which grossly neglects the complexity of the subject.Fortunately this one does provide a terrific introduction for students/researchers in atmospheric sciences/physics/engineering who want to learn more about clouds.Basic concepts are presented in a consice but often mathy way.Sometimes the empirical equations can throw the readers off a bit.Unfortunately these catches are almost inevitable in cloud physics. As an engineer trying to come up to speed on cloud physics, this book was absolutely essential. It covers essentials such as the thermodynamics of dry air, water vapor and its thermodynamic effects, parcel buoyancy and atmospheric stability, mixing and convection, observed properties of clouds, formation of cloud droplets, droplet growth by condensation, initiation of rain in nonfreezing clouds, formation and growth of ice crystals, rain and snow, weather radar, precipitation processes, severe storms and hail, weather modification, and numerical weather models. This book provides a nice introduction to the physics involved with clouds.It is fairly heavy on the math in some chapters andmore descriptive in others.It also provides mathematical and descriptive definitions for many common meteorology terms.The problems at the end of the chapters are challenging.The example problems in the text are too few and too simple to allow the concepts to be easily applied in the problems at the end of the chapters, however, all of the neccesary information is present.Overall the book is very helpful. ...
