5-0 out of 5 stars Seekers of Truth Should Start Here
To those Seekers of Truth interested in the facts surrounding the "Global Warming" debate should start with this book. This is a very accessible, very well written book.First and foremost it establishes the historical record for climate change.I'd supplement that by pointing out that 100 years of data doesn't establish any significant trend worth talking about considering the extreme variations in climate known over hundreds of thousands of years.5-0 out of 5 stars A cooment from the first author
Although more than 5 years have passed since this book was published, it has held up rather well. The reason for that is that it takes a historical perspective and the history portions of the book do not not become rapidly dated. The author can be reached at dhoyt@toast.net if anyone has questions or comments.

4-0 out of 5 stars A skeptical view and enjoyable read of a "hot" topic.
In "The Role of the Sun in Climate Change" the reader finds an entertaining tale told by two scientists.Often in today's debate on global climate change, readers are forced to listen to politicians or themedia. This book serves as a refreshing change from that paradigm.Notonly is the reader presented with a skeptical view of the facts of globalclimate change, but the reader may also enjoy the writing style which onerarely finds in writings by scientists. The opening sentence of Chapter 1sounds like a novel when these scientists describe how one scientist, froman era long gone, went about his daily observing. They even display asense of humor in their chapters and their titles, as in Chapter 9,"Cyclomania" where they set out to describe many of the differentcyclic processes involved in both the sun and climate, and how so manycycles can be used or abused. This book can be enjoyed while commuting towork (as long as you are not the driver) as well as an introduction forserious studies. It contains an extensive bibliography. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars you can't find an alternative.
when i was a student, i used to think, like many other reviewers, that the book is extremely dry. but now as a researcher in atmospheric-oceanic dynamics, i realise that the book is useful in explaining the most essential and elementary theories behind the dynamics one can encounter in meteorology or climate dynamics.
4-0 out of 5 stars An Underrated Text
This book, often simply referred to as "Holton", has been roundly cursed by undergraduates since it was first published. I know, because I was one of them. However, as the years went by, and as the number of classes requiring Holton as a text went by, I realized two things.First, that this book was not meant to hold your hand through all the derivations. It requires a competent instructor who can use Holton as a detailed companion to rigorous coursework. This book is NOT for the average person who wishes to study alone. The second thing is that this book was written to fill a gap. There were no similar atmospheric dynamics texts. As a consequence, it must cover a large amount of material in a rather small, college textbook-sized space. It does this well.Yes, the author's writing style is dry to the extreme, and yes, physical explanations are often lacking. However, if you have access to a competent professor, neither of these are problems. One final thought... as we call the book simply "Holton" remember that Frankenstein's monster is often called simply "Frankenstein", but we will leave comparisons to the reader - and to the author!

5-0 out of 5 stars Paramount
Useful introduction to dynamic meteorology.Covers many fundamental concepts and concisely. It is not a good fluid dynamics book.It is developed for the atmospheric scientist. It contains an exceptional chapter on waves. Also, there are some elementary concepts related to stratospheric dynamics and general circulation that are very well-written. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Ball lightning when seen can be terrifying.
In Mark Stenhoff's book: Ball Lightning: An Unsolved Problem in Atmospheric Physics, he explains that regular lightning strikes when a thunderstorm cloud becomes negatively charged at the base and positively charged at the top. Why this occurs is not fully understood. When the charges become high enough a giant spark, the lightning bolt, occurs between the negative and positive areas to release the build up. Though about half of the lightning strikes occur between the top and bottom of the cloud, strikes also occur to the ground below when it becomes positively charged. The voltage potential between the cloud and ground is at least 10,000 volts (compared with 110 volts in house wiring) and the bolt superheats the surrounding air making it glow and causing a shock wave heard as thunder.
4-0 out of 5 stars Still a mysterious phenomenon
Ball lightning obviously is an extremely rare event. As in the case of other rare phenomena, the investigator is dependent on reports of casual witnesses, because systematic observing programs are not possible. Thereports collected over many years include reliable as well as doubtfulinformation. Stenhoff gives a good sample of reports, photos anddescriptions. These clearly show the range of observed phenomena and thequestions which remain open. The summary of sightings and the review oftheories to explain the variety of observations makes the book veryvaluable, particularly as there is no comparable recent publication on thistopic. I also appreciate the list of references (up to 1998 publications)which allows to look for details regarding reports as well as theoreticalpapers. All together: highly recommended. ... Read more
