5-0 out of 5 stars Hooray for Hartmann!
Simply put, this is the only assigned text I kept from my college years. It's compact size and overall readability are excellent. Although intended for advanced undergrads and beginning graduate students, it's still a great reference for multi-disciplinary scientists, basic global circulation modellers, researchers, and professors. The appendices are particularly noteworhty, especially the list of English and Greek symbols commonly used in just about all the physical sciences, and the derivation of SI Units. If anything, the book is pricey (as all in the International Geophysics Series are), but this one is worth it.

4-0 out of 5 stars The standard of comparison for global systems science.
This is the most thorough, most rigorous, well-written textbook in global systems climatology that I've seen.If you're bright, interested, and aren't allergic to equations (you don't need to read them to understand thebook, you just have to not freak out) then this text will teach you moreabout the planet as a dynamic system than any other that I've seen -- plus, unlike most texbooks, it's not chuck full of stupid mistakes.I've used itin my upper division climatology class since it came out. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars ONE IN A MILLION
I first came across Telford during my Postgraduate days in Nigeria. It's has been my second bible ever since. It's a classical book in Applied Geophysics. It has no rival. I would encourage geophysicists world-wide tohave a second look at the book, especially, professionals, postgraduate andundergraduate students. It's complete with modern references in AppliedGeophysics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful Reference Text
This is the 1st of 2 books written by Dr. Bluestein to teach synoptic and dynamic meteorology to undergraduate college students. Unlike other textbooks, this textbook takes the time to show alot more of the steps in the derivation of equations used in meteorology. Of course this has added to the size of the book but the fact that the author has taken the care to include this in his book is quite helpful for those learning meteorology. It is a useful reference book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best introductory atmospheric science text on the market
Hands down this text is the best for anyone looking for an introduction to the atmospheric sciences. There is almost no topic this book doesn't provide an overview of.Personally my favorite section is Thermodynamics. In my opinion the authors give a very clear and thorough introduction to the subject.Other topics in the book are also equally as good.As an introductory text (2nd year) this book provides a very good base for students in the atmospheric sciences to build upon.I find that even in 4th year I still referred back to the text to recall some of the basics that tend to get lost when you become so fixed on the math.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent (albeit dated) treatment of atmos. science
(Update--there is a new edition of this textbook, out in spring 2006)
5-0 out of 5 stars stimulating book
Although not being a specialist in the field (mine is Condensed Matter Physics), I found this book to be quite stimulating and well written. It is suitable for a student who has already some familiarity with Physics andCalculus (including several variables and vector calculus) and , in myopinion, that is just what makes it exciting, because it does not, althoughbeing introductory, bores the non-specialist reader with a mass of detailsor just qualitative information. I have been responsible for introductoryThemodynamics classes for students of Physics and Meteorology for the lastfour years in my institute, and now I intend to use examples from the book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars New Horizons
The scope and technical detail of this seminal work covering the cutting edge in Atmospheric chemistry is beyond remarkable. Just the number of references is mind boggling. The book presents the material in a veryreadable and understandable style. The authors have kept the reader inmind. They also add surprising levity on occasion and show a keen grasp ofareas outside chemistry. I know of no other work in this field that is morecurrent, comprehensive, and helpful. If only otherscientific works wereas thorough and readable. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating detective work eccentrically presented
On January 26, 1700, a tsunami struck eastern Japan. Because they had experienced no preceding earthquake to explain the wave, contemporary Japanese writers recorded the event as an "orphan tsunami." Almost three centuries later, scientists in the western United States and Canada uncovered evidence of a massive earthquake (more or less a 9 on the modern scale) having occurred here at about that same time. This book presents the evidence for naming that quake the "parent" of the orphan tsunami, and also draws some conclusions about what an earthquake of that size might mean for 21st-century Cascadia.
5-0 out of 5 stars A welcome addition to any collection
This depiction of an orphan tsunami that battered the eastern coast of Japan in 1700 combines colorful imagery with scientific research to infer an account of what happened three hundred years ago.Japanese and American diaries, oral traditions, and ancient maps are combined with more recent photographs, figures and statistical data to support geological evidence found both in North America and Japan. The conclusion reveals an earthquake in the Cascadia Range of North America (estimated magnitude= 8.7 - 9.2) that generated waves which destroyed homes and caused a shipwreck and flooding over 7,000 kilometers away. The book features a table of contents in English and Japanese, author biographies, references, an index, and interpretations of Japanese language and writings used during the research. The artistry of the publication compliments the contents, and anyone with a curiosity for the earth sciences, global history, or cross-cultural studies will be intrigued by this portrayal of a significant natural disaster. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The essential work to understanding aerosols
As the New Testament is to Christians and the Torah is to Jews, this work is the essential literature to understanding aerosols and aerosol technology. You enter as a novice with human explanations of terms, proceed through most of the mundate and requisite statistics, and then areallowed to explode through the fascination that is aerosols.Throughcomprehensive, yet comprehensable language, this is the first and only wayto understand what has previously been an elusive and disperse knowledge. Each edition incorporates current tech and thought. A best, first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to aerosol behavior in various applications!
Excellent guide to particle behaviour...I am involved in research where an indepth understanding of aerosol behavior is a must in electrostatic powder coating and separation. This is an excellent resource and should be a partof your professional collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Please write one more, Dr. Hinds!
How is the aerosol from hair spray related to a carbonated drink or a sponge? It all has to do with what is finely dispersed and what medium suspends this dispersion. With these provoking thoughts, William C. Hinds leads us into the partculars of suspended particles: aerosols. Dr. Hinds has accomplished an amazing feat here. Understanding this complicated field requires familiarity with at least one year of college calculus. With an eloquent writing style laced with differentials and derivations, he describes the various phenomena of aerosols, including particle settling speed, respirability, light scattering, dust explosions, and much more. His description of aerosol measurement techniques is interesting and detailed.(You would be surprised at how complicated are the physics of filtration!) What is truly special, however, is his ability to effectively describe in words what the equations are saying. You can grasp a feel for the phenomena described even if some of the differentials leave you stumped. With problems (and their answers--NOT solutions!) at the end of each chapter, this is an ideal text for graduate students in public health, engineering, industrial hygiene, or toxicology. Professionals working in these fields, however, will find the book a valuable reference. The text is filled with helpful tables and figures, and the more rigorous proofs of important formulas are presented in appendices. References end each chapter.Read more

excellent review of the available data on this difficult subject.Lots of evidence based data and peer reviewed literature is used as the basis of discussion of this controversial subject.Highly recommended although itmay also raise more questions that it answers. The authors are highlyqualified (Prof at MIT with experience in environmental affairs andpracticing MD allergist)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
Of all that I have read on the subject of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), this is by far the most cogent, balanced, organized, and complete summary of information on this mysterious medical phenomenon.I would recommend it to anyone who suffers from MCS, TILT, CFIDS, or any of the constellation of related supposedly "psychological" symptomologies, including depression, anxiety disorder, or bi-polar illness.Read it BEFORE you spend another nickel on supplements, vitamins, or anti-depressant drugs!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best source for the latest science & policy info on MCS!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview
This book provides a good overview of air permitting and good explanations of many of the issues involved. I don't think it "...shows facility air quality managers, regulatory agency staff, and consultants how to prepare permit applications for Title V Federal Operating Permits or for New Source Review (NSR)or Prevention of Significant Deterioration (PSD) perrmits for new or modified sources of air pollutant emissions, and how to comply with permits obtained." The differences between different facilities and states are too great for one book to do all that. Most books providing advice about air permitting imagine the reader is working for some "Mega-firm" with a team of eager co-workers. They might prove more useful if they focused on the poor guy locked alone in a room with six inches of forms and a bad calculator. Still, Leonard knows his material and provides many useful insights into the permit process. He writes clearly, has organized his material well and does a better job with a huge topic than any other book I have found.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book on Air Quality Permitting in the U.S.
