Editorial Review

Originally published in 1909, "Handy Farm Devices" is more than an engaging trip down memory lane. For any small farmer or homesteader, the techniques and devices described in detail are just as useful, durable, and fully functional today as they were 75 years ago. You will learn to build a portable chicken coop, a stone boat (for moving stone), a lightweight orchard ladder, gates that don't sag, and a handy wood splitter, as well as rudimentary farm structures, well houses, bee hives, a baby's cradle, a cheese press and much more. The charming, turn-of-the-century language and useful and inspirational quotes from Shakespeare, the Bible, Bacon, Longfellow and many others make this book a delight to read. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An asset to the self sufficient dreamer!
Yes this is a ver valuable book!Dont want to or just cant afford to buy or rent expensive machinery to do the basic farm duties many have done before the age of technology?THIS IS A MUST!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, practical, book
This book is filled with tons of little tricks and devices to make farm life easier. Much of the information is old and so it may not be of as much use to someone with a high tech farm, but if you still do some things the old fashioned way, this book probably has something that can help you. And even if you can't use the stuff, it's interesting to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure practicality & lots of nostalgia
Handy Farm Devices is a really great book if you'd like to read about early 20th century practical living. There's no fluff here; just practical tips for simple living, and lots of good ideas for fixing/making things around the house. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best introductory atmospheric science text on the market
Hands down this text is the best for anyone looking for an introduction to the atmospheric sciences. There is almost no topic this book doesn't provide an overview of.Personally my favorite section is Thermodynamics. In my opinion the authors give a very clear and thorough introduction to the subject.Other topics in the book are also equally as good.As an introductory text (2nd year) this book provides a very good base for students in the atmospheric sciences to build upon.I find that even in 4th year I still referred back to the text to recall some of the basics that tend to get lost when you become so fixed on the math.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent (albeit dated) treatment of atmos. science
(Update--there is a new edition of this textbook, out in spring 2006)
5-0 out of 5 stars stimulating book
Although not being a specialist in the field (mine is Condensed Matter Physics), I found this book to be quite stimulating and well written. It is suitable for a student who has already some familiarity with Physics andCalculus (including several variables and vector calculus) and , in myopinion, that is just what makes it exciting, because it does not, althoughbeing introductory, bores the non-specialist reader with a mass of detailsor just qualitative information. I have been responsible for introductoryThemodynamics classes for students of Physics and Meteorology for the lastfour years in my institute, and now I intend to use examples from the book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Packed With Info
This book is very good I must have read it 3-4 times the first month I had it and picked up tips each time. It is well written, easy to understand, as I have never built a boat before, still havn't but hope to this winter. Excellent intro to a project like this.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very handy technical back stop!!
This is a very useful book in terms of getting a handle on wood strip kayak construction. It is well written, concise and clear. It suffers from some unfortunate americanisms (eg material suppliers, wood types, etc). There are also some areas like staple-less construction that are not covered deeply enough - but overall a fine addition to the books in this space.

The scope and technical detail of this seminal work covering the cutting edge in Atmospheric chemistry is beyond remarkable. Just the number of references is mind boggling. The book presents the material in a veryreadable and understandable style. The authors have kept the reader inmind. They also add surprising levity on occasion and show a keen grasp ofareas outside chemistry. I know of no other work in this field that is morecurrent, comprehensive, and helpful. I picked up this book for an introduction for Sonar/Radar.My background knowledge of DSP helped me understand the material, but there is a brief intro for basic signal processing.Other techniques such as beamforming, sonar systems are explained in good detail.Easy to read, diagrams are nottoo good.Reasonable amount of derivation of results to convince me of theresults stated. written in 1991, I am looking for a more updated bookthough. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars How to RestoreClassic Farmall Tractors
This is a very informative book with lots of good color photos and descriptive, but not model specific info on evaluating, tear down, inspecting and repairing componants. Each chapter is devoted to a seperate componant or system. The paint chapter focuses on selecting different types of paint, primers, sealers. There are suggestions on selecting and applying decals. I found a nice appendix with contact info for parts suppliers and clubs. I didn't see much about tractors made after the late 50's. This book would be a great companion to a detailed shop manual for someone who has little or no experience working on tractors. There is also a chapter that gives ideas on tools and tool selection.

5-0 out of 5 stars A no-nonsense, in-depth how-to manual for collectors
How To Restore Classic Farmall Tractors: The Ultimate Do-It-Yourself Guide To Rebuilding And Restoring is a no-nonsense, in-depth how-to manual for collectors, hobbyists, and even professionals. 5-0 out of 5 stars All You need
If you want to build a greenland kayak then this is all you need. Instructions are clear and not wordy. It also has sections on making paddles and paddling clothing. The style shown in this book has slight deviations from the original greenland technique but he specifically states all the changes. I built a kayak from this book with my only help being a second pair of hands, and i am only 15. The boat was exactly to his designs and it is fast, fairly stable, and responsive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific book with lots of details and pictures
This is a terrific book.I bought Robert Morris' book on Skin on Frame building and had many questions.Chris Cunningham's book provides lot of details and answered my questions. Both books compliment each other and since I do not know much about this process, I consider both required reading before I build.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great detail and instruction
This book was great for a novice builder like myself. The intructions were clear and easy to follow. I like the way the instruction passages started with the result intended followed by detailed instructions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Germany's Panther Tank
This book provides an excellent technical and developmental history of the Panther. The author has obviously done his research on this vehicle. The book is well worth the price.

2-0 out of 5 stars Expect more from a $96 book
While Mr. Adamy may be an expert, apparently these books were thrown together a little quickly.Read the text and all will be well.Follow the example problems in the back and you're headed for a train wreck. When he works the problems they are frought with mistakes, big, blatant mistakes. For someone trying to learn EW the first time these are huge confidence deflators.Find an independent source to check your answers.

5-0 out of 5 stars clear descriptions of measure and countermeasure
This book is the logically titled sequel to EW 101. The style is the same. Namely where very intricate and specialised maths and engineering is deprecated. What Adamy has done is reduce a problem down to the minimum physical model that conveys the essential information. This lets a reader, who might not be an engineer in the electronic warfare field, understand what the various measures and countermeasures are about.

This text is essential for anyone who wishes to test or measure optical sub-components, components, systems, or devices. Dennis lays out the fundamentals of each measurement in an easy to understand format. This is especially useful because this field is growing tremendously and often utilizes people from other fields who lack familiarity with these measurements. This book provides as easy to understand tutorial for people who need to learn these techniques. 5-0 out of 5 stars Ulysses ina world cruising power boat
Although I have never ventured beyond the horizon -- fish for blues out to 25 miles offshore--- I have been fascinated with the modern equivalents of Homer's fabled voyager. This book brings Homer's world-travelling explorer into the 21st century. Make no mistake, this is not a tale of imaginary voyages, but an eminently practical guide for those who would cross oceans
4-0 out of 5 stars Ocean Going Motor Yachts for Newbies
This is an excellent book for readers who are interested in learning about ocean passages in small motor yachts.Author Robert Beebe explains why these boats are superior to sailboats for comfort and stability, and explains the naval architecture principles that make these vessels his preferred choice for crossing oceans. That might sound dull, but it isn't.The combines practical tips on how to evaluate and/or design boats with basics on seamanship and plenty of war stories to lighten the text. The clear message is that, using this class of yacht, anybody willing to learn the basics of boathandling can learn to become an ocean passage-maker.Whether that's your dream (as it is mine) or you just want to read about it, this is a lively and enlightening book.

This book has wonderful ideas about using commonly available items such as witch hazel and petroleum jelly to clean and maintain your boat. 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book of line drawings ! (010)
Unlike most books on warships, which tend to focus on areas such as it's service history and technical specifications, which this book does cover, here is a fantastic collection of line drawings. I have several books featuring comprehensive line drawings of aircraft, but I had never seen such a book dedicated to a ship before. The author, a Polish modelmaker by the name of Janusz Skulski, has produced a book of such depth it will astound you. The 3-view plans are accompanied by great descriptive keys, and range from the entire hull and superstructure, liteally right down to individual nuts and bolts. The technical specifications are detailed and the photos, while necessarily brief because hardly any were ever taken of the Yamato, are very imformative. I can not stress enough how impressed I was with the level of detail, it was like looking at the original blueprints!
4-0 out of 5 stars Painstakingly reverse-engineered drawings
The Anatomy series will be very familiar with naval history enthusiasts. What makes this special is that all drawings and pictures of these huge ships were ordered destroyed just before the Japanese surrender. Thus the pictorial section is understandably a little briefer than usual, while the drawings section contains many that were painstakingly reverse engineered from the study of photos.
3-0 out of 5 stars A fine book, but not sure why I got it now.

5-0 out of 5 stars excelente

4-0 out of 5 stars The Only You Will Ever Need on Flow Meters
Highly detailed in every way. Complete equations suitable for computer programming. In fact, Rosemount and other companies refer to this handbook exclusively. The index is the best way to use this book. As handbooks go, it is easy to use and an excellent compilation of vendor information as well as original R&D information. There are a few quarks in the equations for integral orifices, but the actual errors are negligable. I got improved equations from Rosemount. The only reason why I did not give 5 stars is that it takes some time to dig information from the handbook. It's all there, but, it takes time to digest it. You must have this book if you encounter instruments, particularly, flow metes, during your work. You must have this book! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating detective work eccentrically presented
On January 26, 1700, a tsunami struck eastern Japan. Because they had experienced no preceding earthquake to explain the wave, contemporary Japanese writers recorded the event as an "orphan tsunami." Almost three centuries later, scientists in the western United States and Canada uncovered evidence of a massive earthquake (more or less a 9 on the modern scale) having occurred here at about that same time. This book presents the evidence for naming that quake the "parent" of the orphan tsunami, and also draws some conclusions about what an earthquake of that size might mean for 21st-century Cascadia.
5-0 out of 5 stars A welcome addition to any collection
This depiction of an orphan tsunami that battered the eastern coast of Japan in 1700 combines colorful imagery with scientific research to infer an account of what happened three hundred years ago.Japanese and American diaries, oral traditions, and ancient maps are combined with more recent photographs, figures and statistical data to support geological evidence found both in North America and Japan. The conclusion reveals an earthquake in the Cascadia Range of North America (estimated magnitude= 8.7 - 9.2) that generated waves which destroyed homes and caused a shipwreck and flooding over 7,000 kilometers away. The book features a table of contents in English and Japanese, author biographies, references, an index, and interpretations of Japanese language and writings used during the research. The artistry of the publication compliments the contents, and anyone with a curiosity for the earth sciences, global history, or cross-cultural studies will be intrigued by this portrayal of a significant natural disaster. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The essential work to understanding aerosols
As the New Testament is to Christians and the Torah is to Jews, this work is the essential literature to understanding aerosols and aerosol technology. You enter as a novice with human explanations of terms, proceed through most of the mundate and requisite statistics, and then areallowed to explode through the fascination that is aerosols.Throughcomprehensive, yet comprehensable language, this is the first and only wayto understand what has previously been an elusive and disperse knowledge. Each edition incorporates current tech and thought. A best, first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to aerosol behavior in various applications!
Excellent guide to particle behaviour...I am involved in research where an indepth understanding of aerosol behavior is a must in electrostatic powder coating and separation. This is an excellent resource and should be a partof your professional collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Please write one more, Dr. Hinds!
How is the aerosol from hair spray related to a carbonated drink or a sponge? It all has to do with what is finely dispersed and what medium suspends this dispersion. With these provoking thoughts, William C. Hinds leads us into the partculars of suspended particles: aerosols. Dr. Hinds has accomplished an amazing feat here. Understanding this complicated field requires familiarity with at least one year of college calculus. With an eloquent writing style laced with differentials and derivations, he describes the various phenomena of aerosols, including particle settling speed, respirability, light scattering, dust explosions, and much more. His description of aerosol measurement techniques is interesting and detailed.(You would be surprised at how complicated are the physics of filtration!) What is truly special, however, is his ability to effectively describe in words what the equations are saying. You can grasp a feel for the phenomena described even if some of the differentials leave you stumped. With problems (and their answers--NOT solutions!) at the end of each chapter, this is an ideal text for graduate students in public health, engineering, industrial hygiene, or toxicology. Professionals working in these fields, however, will find the book a valuable reference. The text is filled with helpful tables and figures, and the more rigorous proofs of important formulas are presented in appendices. References end each chapter.Read more
