4-0 out of 5 stars The most complete single reference on the IJN
Warships of the Imperial Japanese Navy, 1869-1945 is the culmination of three German naval historians in ttempting to document every combatant to serve in the Imperial Japanese Navy. This is the most complete book on theIJN available and contains excellent data on all major and minorwarships.4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for the IJN
An excellent reference. This book contains listings for nearly every IJNship up to the end of WWII. This book does not have pages of descriptiveinfo concerning ship types, instead this book's info is listed in shorttabular layouts. All in all a great book to have if you are interested inthe IJN.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very complete review on Imperial Japanese Navy's warships
The book is very complete, listing almost EVERY warship, of every size and type, manned by the IJN during the covered period. The data are quite detailed and the book is filled with a lot of fine drawings. The photos are not so numerous but all of them are of good quality. Every class is briefly described in all respects: technically, historically and as regard the operational career of each ship till her life's end (scrapped or lost, it doesn't matter). If you are looking for a complete reference on the IJN's warships, you can't miss this book: I own a good warship library, comprising other books dealing with the IJN, but I regard this one my true reference on the matter! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A book that must be practiced.
Ok here's the situation, you are in the middle of the atlantic on your sailing boat, a huge wave has just broached you, but the yacht is OK,nothing seriously damaged. However, the electronic navigation equipment issuffering from it's salt water bath and when you dust the cobwebs off yoursextant your trusty crewman drops it over the side. You have your almanac, but you can't find a hand compass anywhere.A fog is beginning to comedown and you are afraid that you might be drifting into a busy shippinglane. What to do?5-0 out of 5 stars A page turner in its own right. An initiation to the craft.
This is a highly readable treatise on marine navigation with applicability to all voyages. The topics covered provide real motivation to become a navigator. The techniques developed scream out to be tried as exercises,if only to stay mentally on edge during an otherwise boring watch. Loran,(D)gps, ... even your compass can be zapped by a bolt of lightening. Getmentally prepared.Deep Six the Sunday Times crossword puzzle.Calculateyour position with just your ten dollar watch and the Nautical Almanach!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written book about emergency ocean navigation.
This book covers simple and indepth information of all aspects of emergency navigation. The material includes use of celestial observation tools that are hand made, navigation with and without a time piece and use of surrounding weather conditions. This book is very user friendly and a must have for the serious mariners and student of traditional navigation. It must be remembered that batteries will only last so long in the GPS. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book by Skulski
Janusz Skulski is probably one of the foremost IJN experts outside of Japan and his books are known for their meticulous research and first class drawings.Skulski uses sources in Japan with ties to the IJN and this isreflected in his books. This effort on the cruiser Takao is probably hisbest effort, with more information than the Yamato book (of course, theYamato was sunk and information on her is sparse-Takao survived the war, albeit in a damaged state) and none of the editing flaws which marred hislatest book on the Fuso.4-0 out of 5 stars My Thoughts (for whatever they're worth)
Janusz Skulski's second contributation to the "Anatomy of the Ship" series, I thought that this was a bit more polished than the "Yamato" volume. These two books together are one of the bestEnglish-language resources (that I am aware of) for WWII Japanese navyvessels. This book has everthing; from profiles of the ship as it appearedin its career, down to the rivet patterns used to assemble the hull, all inscaled drawings. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Good literature review, very dated absorption technology
The review of the Clean Air Act is well done. Absorption tower examples are very dated - saddles are stated to be the preferred tower packing, so the tower designed is grossly oversized with enormous pressure drop compared to what is possible with a modern packing. If you need a reference work with practical examples to pollution control towers keep looking.

2-0 out of 5 stars Air Pollution Control Technology Handbook
If you need a reference work that summarizes the Clean Air Act then this is a good source. It is also has technically sound theoretical explanations of air pollution control. However it is a poor source if you seek suggestions for any type of current air pollution control project. The examples in the text are extremely dated and hence grossly oversized. The authors recommend that saddles be used to pack towers and then design the tower to have over 40 ft of packing. As a result their towers are much to big, much too tall and have enormously high pressure drop. Unfortunately the authors ignore (or are simply unaware of) several generations of mass transfer packing development that allow for much more practical and far less costly designs than per their examples. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Handbook of Dimensional Measurement
This book is not for the average reader. It uses extremely technical terms to convey simple expressions. Explanations such as thread concepts were over stated and confusing. I returned my copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars this isn't hard: it's 'ol', not 'aw'
I was pawing through a Port Townsend bookstore the other day and saw the title and more importantly the sub-title of this book. And I instantly had one of those epiphany moments where a major element of the rest of my life fell into place. I've wanted to have the means to explore the world by ocean for a very long time but haven't had any good ideas on how to make progress. I bought Mr. Buehler's book and now I do.
2-0 out of 5 stars The Troller Yacht Book: A Powerboater's Guide to Crossing Oceans

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring and Disappointing
I found that the hoopla for this book was overrated. Groves' book was not at all what I expected. I was expecting to read about the personal and daily battles of the scientists (Teller, Oppenheimer and others) at Los Alamos and how they discovered, designed and built the bombs. This was not the case at all.4-0 out of 5 stars How to pay attention to detail
After reading the Making of the Atomic Bomb, I thought I would get a view point from on of the actual participants.General Groves had an eclectic story keeping all his crazy scientists in line to meet an objective. Then handing the construction of the facilities and checking on the progress of the Germans. 4-0 out of 5 stars The head of the project tells his story
Gen. Groves deputy on the Manhatten Project, Gen. Keith Nichols, was once asked what he thought of he thought of Groves. He began by saying "Leslie Groves is the biggest son-of-a $%&%* I ever met in mylife" and ended by saying that of all the people he'd met in his life,he didn't think any of them could have done as well as Groves in runningthe Manhatten Project.I think that if he'd been put in charge in Jan. of'43, instead of Sept., the war probably would have ended earlier, savinghundreds of thousands of lives. This book shows him at his egotisticalbest and worst, and is essential for understanding how and why the U.S. gotthe bomb before Japan was invaded.Just don't expect any modesty at all. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars One of those bricks to support your career
Seriously, it is thick as a brick, and it is full of facts and formulas and practical advice for engineers. But you should not use this book instead of an engineer--it starts at a too high level. For instance, if you are looking for simple wave equations, look elsewhere. But if coastal engineering is your future, buy this book, borrow it, steal it, whatever you have to do, just get it. I only give it 4 stars since it may loose some readers due to its rather high entry level. But of course, the price suggests that it is an expert book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A really practical guide to navigating in small boats
I have read or skimmed dozens of works on navigation.I have also navigated a variety of small boats along the coasts of Nova Scotia.None of the other books provided the degree of realistic and practical advice that this one does.It takes a pragmatic view that the typical small boat operator will use visual navigation where possible, backed up by judicious use of GPS/Loran and/or radar. In my experience, this is the way that most of us navigate. The book provides lots of excellent tips based on the author's extensive experience in small boats, ships, and the coast guard. It also debunks common misconceptions about GPS and LORAN accuracy and clearly explains how to use these tools. One caveat is that the book is biased to North America. This makes it clearer for an audience on this continent, but not as useful below the equator or in Europe or Asia. All in all, if you buy one book to help you learn or improve your small boat navigation skills, this would be the one I recommend. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "The Firecracker Boys" never quit!
With John Bolton as our renegade permanent representative to the UN, working for the US nuclear weapons industry by trying to stop the UN program of nonproliferation, "The Firecracker Boys" so brilliantly described in Dan O'Neill's book continue even today with their diabolical efforts. Not to mention NASA's plan to send nuclear powered rockets into space.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential, scary reading
About a fascinating chapter in American history, and how the democratic process prevailed--barely--over the certain vested interests in the military-industrial complex.Makes Dwight Eisenhower look like a prophet--and also details some of the career of Edward Tellar, rightly celebrated as the father of the American H-bomb but then subsequently responsible for much bad science, including Ronald Reagan's Star Wars. This book is very well researched and documented. One moral to draw: citizens must be involved with public policy. The former Soviet Union, undertaking a similar project, turned areas of Siberia so radioactive that it will not be safe to dwell there for 10,000 or more years. We almost did the same in Alaska--but thankfully did not.Read this book to (1) understand how this disaster was averted, and what we can do to continue to safeguard our democratic processes; and (2) for great--true--story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creepy
I cannot help but notcice how the reviewers which seem to have been deeply disgusted by this book prefer to remain anonymous.Even if their opinion is that nuclear testing should continue, it disturbs me that these reviewers were not taken aback by the colossal mountain of half-truths, misrepresentations, and downright lies that the AEC (Atomic Energy Comission) used to lobby this project to Alaskans.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good overview of design
I'm an automotive designer who enjoys technical reading.Over the years I've subscribed to numerous boating publications and have purchased a handfull of books on sail power yacht design. This book is by far the best.It will answer many of your questions such as "why is a longer hull faster?", "why does 1.34 x the square root of the waterline length approximate max hull speed?".The book is well written and presents a short history of each design element i.e, sail configurations. The technical formulas are seperated in sidebar configuration for those who avoid math at all costs. If you are only going to buy one book on sail powered yacht design-this is the one.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Yacht Design Explained"delivers!
Clear and thorough explanations, lavishly illustrated and wide ranging in scope, put Killing and Hunter's book at the top of its field. "Yacht Design Explained" delivers an excellent mix of the technical with the practical. Killing's extremely readable, clearly understandable text "fairs" seamlessly with Douglas Hunter's outstanding two color drawings. This book covers a wide range of subjects from physics of design to the reasons that various designs work or fail. Attention is given to the history of competetive yachting.Competetive racer, day sailor, dabbler in yacht design, and curious reader alike will find this book a delight."Yacht Design Explained"delivers and deserves to be a classic.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy it unless you have to!!!
As a college student I was forced to buy the textbook per my professor's curriculum and request. He often cited inaccuracies claiming he often had called the publisher to complain. The answers to the review questions (at the end of the chapters) were very challenging to find within the chapter. It's rough reading (I love to read and read often.) Unless you are required to buy the book, DON'T! I hope this helps.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best intro to meteorology out there
If you are looking for a nice intro to weather or even a nice thorough review then this would be the book for you. Clearly defined and many illustrations available to help you grasp the info without reading it over several times.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introductory weather text.
Lutgens and Tarbuck made this a very readable text by writing in a stratightforward manner and by focusing on fundamental principles. The typical non-science major undergrad or general reader should be able to grasp the important concepts, while the more scientifically literate readers will find plenty of material to wrap their minds around. For example, much of the quantitative stuff is presented in separate boxes, for those who want to go beyond the basics as presented in the text. The illustrations by Dennis Tasa are, of course, excellent, as are most of the photos. I used this text for a weather and climate class I taught and would use it again. ... Read more

To: Lost in Air2-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Hicks' approach to sizing pipe for compressed air
Mr. Hicks has done a wonderful job in compling equations, however, he has missed the practical applications in compressed air and vacuum systems.I initially used his theoritcal position on calculating pressure drop in pipe for compressed air.His position seems reasonable and logical until you compare the results with practical applications.Ingresoll-Rand, the air compressor manufacturer, published tables of pressure drop verses pipe sizes, delivery pressures and ACFM.Futher ASPE has published a data book which leads the engineer into an empirical equation for calculating pressure loss in compressed air piping. The results with both Ingresoll-Rand and ASPE agree.Using Mr. Hicks' therotical approach drives the pipe size much larger than needed and therefore the cost of the project. My suggestion is that Mr. Hicks contact I-R and ASPE to incorporate their empirical approach to sizing pipe for compressed air and vacuum systems. ...
