some useful advice
The book came out in 2002 and was certainly written before the events of September 2001. Certainly seems germane nowadays. It tries to systematically study terrorism. Its causes and its tactics. Needless to say, when I turn to the index and look up hijacking, none of the book's instances refer to the possibility of kamikazes. This is how we can tell that it waswritten before September 2001.

A book which should be read by all first responders...
This book gives you the vital information you need to perform your duties as a first responder as well asshowing security and safety managers what is expected of them also. The information is given in bite size chunks so as to aid in the retention of the material. The pictures and tables are very helpful in getting the key ideas across. The case studies of both the Oklahoma and first WTC attack are noteworthy for their detail. For consultants, worth its weight in gold
While not a cookbook, this is definitely a "how-to" book by a woman who's forgotten more about "how to" than I'll ever know. Betty explains not only how to research, analyze, and document the entirespectrum of possible environmental impacts, but why, and she does it ineasily accessible language. The bulk of her experience is intransportation, and it shows in the text, but the principles and proceduresapply to any federal project. I made sure my staff had a copy so theywouldn't keep swiping mine. Thanks, Betty, we needed this...it's everythingyou promised and more! The best all-in-one handbook for environmental practitioners

Electric Motors and Control Techniques
I haven't completed the book as yet but to the point I am at it is very informative and easy to read.I do recommend this book...

Disappointing
I was disappointed with this book. While full of detailed figures and schematics, the book is hodge-podge of information with very little logical flow. It jumps from 100,000 feet into the treetops with no explanation. The author peppers the book with his insights but without any context and background leaving the reader confused. As well, the book is dated given recent advancements in motor control technology.

Once Upon a Timeline
I read The Religion of Technology: The Divinity of Man and the Spirit of Invention by David F. Noble for a college course called Philosophy of Technology.I read this book in the context of the required reading of other philosophers such as: Bill Joy, Raymond Kurzweil, Douglas Kellner, Don Ihde, Jacques Ellul, Hans Jonas, Martin Heideggar, Albert Borgmann, and Arnold Pacey.
Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
Amazing how I could use the title "Religion of Technology" and counter Noble's thesis.Key to understanding this book is to grasp the milieu in which Noble writes:he wishes to utilize historical critical methods in deconstructing the evolution of technology.Fascinating idea, and his ideas are intriguing; but he is misguided.The key problem lies in the Cartesian dichotomy of spirit vs. body. People are giving this book less credit than it deserves....
This is a good book and a bit of a fun read though in its nature-- in what it tries to be-- it alienates itself from whatever group is intended to be its core audience. Nevertheless, it is worthwhile and well-written; though I gather than some, from its reviews, have had some problems with its difficulty and subject matter.Read more

Not Great
Let me say that the book is okay, nothing wrong with the book. But here is my question: What is the purpose of the book, the exact purpose?? I work around tools and shops so when I see a book for $110. I think it must have something new. It does not, and it is at a level where it does not really have enough information to help. It is sort of am overview with pictures and some drawings. Coffee table book on machines - so to speak.

Guide to technical writers, not just technical writing
There's a lot of excellent information in here on finding, learning, understanding, and keeping a job as a technical writer. There's information on typical tasks associated with tech writer jobs, attributes common to good tech writers, breaking into the field (samples, writing tests, portfolios, degrees, recruiters, interview tips, networking), and the characteristics of a good technical document. The book goes into usability issues, completeness, consistency, and more. It guides you through five steps to creating a technical document, and introduces you to the idea that a lot of your time won't be spent writing at all--it'll be spent talking to people, using the products you're writing about, collecting information, revising, and so on.

Technical Writing for Dummies was bad enough...yet here's another one that has the same problems: no basis in reality.Without natural ability, technical writing is not something that can be taught in a book.In addition, how you use this ability in "the real world" is a whole other story!
