Overpriced and Under-illustrated
For 60 bucks, I expected something better than a book slightly larger than a paperback and printed on cheap paper.The book reminds me of a sociology professor I once had who taught his classes from a set of 20-year-old handwritten notes written on a yellow legal pad.And that's what this book is, a set of instructor's notes.
Review for the petroleum industry: a nontechnical guide
The illustrations in this book are terrible.The few illustrations that this book has look like a junior high school computer graphics class made them.If you are a visual learner like me, then this book might not be the best book for your money.Needless to say, I'm disappointed.Also, the book isn't a standard text book size, so don't let the amount of pages trick you into believing that it has a lot of text and info.

More a guide to the mechanics of petroleum production
This book is essentially a step by step explication of the hows (and to some extent the whys) of commercial oil and gas exploration and production. Of the books 14 chapters, 13 are devoted primarily to how oil is found, accessed and brought to the surface. There is one chapter on refining, and another on marketing, that together occupy less than 10% of the books total space.

English Not So Good
(1)Distillation:Flow rates only decrease as one goes up the columb not down as this text states.Distillation is driven by the reboiler not the condenser.(2) Chemical reaction equations don't balance

Well composed, detailed and knowledgable
The author does a good job in this book of explaining all that individuals in the petrochemical industry would like to know. This book is an excellent guidebook with well regarded diagrams and charts and a clear logical flow in material.

Old reservoir engineering
I have read the book and found that it basically covers the state of the art of "classical" reservoir engineering of about the 60's or 70's, with some material taken from papers published in the 80's and 90's. It is outdated to a great extent. Great book to find all basic topics on reservoir engineering
I've seen that all topics on reservoir engineering have been covered in sufficient detail and very systematically.I strongly reccommed the book to those looking for a starting book on reservoir engineering and to those who, after a while, got lost among SPE papers and specialized books to come back to the backbone of the issue.

Excellent book, easy to read for petroleum engineers yet quite insightful and nicely presented. A great deal of references are useful to direct further reading, this book became my preferred reference in petroleum geology. Highly recommendable. From the Titan of petroleum!

Excellent text for a working Process Engineer
As a Process Engineer, working in both operations and design in the upstream oil industry, it is pleasing to find a text that finally covers all the unit operations you are likely to encounter in oil processing. The book is an easy read that doesn't get weighed down in first principles. This means that you can quickly get the information you require and have confidence in your decisions. It's a must for anyone working in the industry, especially those who may be offshore, I always have my copy with me.

Another useful pocket guide for a wide range of professionals: process andmechanical engineers, designers, shop foremen, piping fitters andassemblers. A large number of data on flanges, piping, and fittings willcertainly save a precious time looking for data in piles of differentsources. It deserves to find its place among handful manuals to be at handin every given point of time. Of course, one can not find in the book allinformation he might need. A tough read but a worthwhile one
Hubbert's Peak: The Impending World Oil Shortage is not an easy read, but it is an important one if you really want to understand why some knowledgable people are trying to warn us about the end of cheap oil. The author, Kenneth Deffeyes, is thoroughly grounded in his material on both the academic and the professional level, having literally grown up in the oil field, worked for some of the largest oil companies in the world, and having taught at Princeton University. He also has the more unique qualification of having actually studied under and worked with M. King Hubbert himself. The problem with his book, however, is that it is written as if presuming that the reader already has some background in both geology and statistics. At less than 200 pages, it is not a particularly long book, but it is rather dense in places, leaving the reader frequently wishing he could interrupt the lecture and ask questions before moving on.
Erroneous from the Very First Sentence
If the reader knew absolutely nothing about oil production and read this book, then he or she would believe his claim that global production of crude oil will decline permanently in the very near future.Deffeyes takes his cue from price fluctuations, and I, knowing nothing about petroleum exploration and refining and hearing a lot about 'Peak Oil' (made popular by such conspiratorial tomes as The Grand Chessboard, The Party's Over and Crossing the Rubicon), keep hearing that little statistician's nagging voice in my head, saying: Technically Dense but Rewarding
I agree with some other reviewers, that the initial chapters are a bit intense technically.However, I think the book is worth the effort.It paints a very detailed picture on how unusual oil deposits really are, and how thorough the search has been to find the "elephants" or big deposits.Also, it really gets you to understand the oil exploration and drilling business.For me, I found that very interesting.
