Nontechnical Guide to Petroleum Geology, Exploration, Drilling and Production (2nd Edition)
I am a new Environmental Planner to the oil and gas industry, this book has been an integral part of my learning process. Easy to read and quite thorough- I am very satisfied and haven't found the need for another book.

Easy as pie.
The nontechnical guide arrived in the mail in the speedy fashion typical of Amazon.I ripped into the packaging, withdrawing my hardbound book on Petroleum knowledge.I quicklyflew threw the pages of the book, noting how the information was presented.Well organized according to subject, ie Geology, exploration, Drilling and Production,each one of these areas of the oil industry was explained in simple, easy to understand language, and would allow this book to be used as a class room text.There were many pictures, diagrams and drawn out explanations about the subject being explained.The material presented information in a specific area and in a manner that was easy to absorb, find again and use.
Very informative book - a must have for the Petroleum industry
We purchased this book to supplement some internal training for our company. It is the most comprehensive book on the subject that I have found, and we did a lot of research. We will be using it for a pre-requisite to a geology course for all of our new employees.

do you want to major in this field?
This subject enables much of modern civilisation. From producing fuel for transport, of course. But the entire plastics industry also depends on these refineries. So Gary explains to a reader who hopefully has had some exposure to chemistry, how this comes about.

Best book on the oil problem I have read
There are lots of books on the oil problem.One would have to be a monk in a cloister not to know that oil demand is running pretty close to the maximum possible production from existing fields.Certainly that suggests we will be having a problem soon.Even President Bush, never a leader in this kind of thing, scolds us for becoming "addicted to oil."(If we are addicted, he, Vice President Cheney, and their crowd certainly are the dealers who fed the addiction.)
After there's no more cheap oil, then what?
This is a follow-up book to Deffeyes' Hubbert's Peak: The Impending World Oil Shortage which he published in 2001. The first book basicly thoroughly covered the background of oil - what it is, how it's created, where it's found, etc - and the reasons why M. King Hubbert predicted, quite accurately, in 1956 that the US would reach its peak oil production in the early 70's, and later predicted that the world in general would reach its peak oil production in the first decade of the 21st century, i.e. where we are right now. It's a short but rather dense read, but it is worth it if you want to understand the background of the situation where we now find ourselves.
The book centers on the technical, but be patient.
Yes, there is a technical focus in this book.But it is quite plainly written, and more importantly it lays very solid groundwork to discuss oil alternatives.

After seeing this book, I see a lot of emphasis in structural geology. We could also add some input on Sedimentology and Geostatistics, which care more about reservoir heterogeneity. ... Read more

Excellent book, easy to read for petroleum engineers yet quite insightful and nicely presented. A great deal of references are useful to direct further reading, this book became my preferred reference in petroleum geology. Highly recommendable. From the Titan of petroleum!

Goodbye Dino-poo oil theory. Vast oil reserve found miles below Gulf of Mexico floor.
Last week's report of oil discovered in igneous rock many miles beneath the floor of the Gulf of Mexico led me to re-visit this avant-guarde 1999 book.
Thought provoking and just plain provocative!
It is easy to make extraordinary claims. It is much harder to back them up with extraordinary proof. While it can't be declared yet that Gold has cleared that bar, he can't be dismissed as a crackpot, either. This is a well-written, well-reasoned book that deserves wide circulation. Its implications are far-ranging in geographic and temporal scope.

Decimating info for peak oil parrots
This book just decimates all the peak oil myths.I'm glad of this, despite being born and raised in one of the most prolific oil producing areas outside of the Middle East.This info (when proven correct) will hurt the economy there immeasurably, but if it benefits our species, then so be it.The gargantuan wealth generated by oil over the last 50 or so years is obscene, which is no doubt one of the reasons why Saudi Arabia is virtually closed to outsiders.If only more of humanity knew of what goes on there...When I lived in Japan I knew someone who was an oil executive in Saudi, and the stories were outrageous in terms of materialism.Literally offensive.The kind of display and arrogance that just rubs your face into it, then stomps on your throat.The greed must stop and the info in this book is a powerful push towards that goal.The Russians knew much of the info well before Thomas Gold and have benefitted and prospered in their own right.In fact, they have sold their ideas and deep drilling technology to a number of other countries (which all just happen to be on America's sh-t list) who now export oil for huge profit.Be that as it may, this book can be a bit of a technical read in parts, but well worth the insights attained.Despite taking training in geology and biochemistry myself, Mr. Gold explains things and bridges the gap in unique ways that will cause many light bulbs to burn brightly above your head. ... Interesting potential
A fascinating book about a topic that not too many years ago was regarded akin to snake oil. At one point, all that was known about this subject was anecdotal. And since events like earthquakes occur irregularly, it was hard for researchers to systematically study this phenomenon. Read more
