Introductory but excellent lecture of geostatistics
This book treats some stuffs in geostatistics including basic stochastic theory, variogram, and various kriging techniques. Though this is an introductory textbook of geostatistics, it's theoretical approach and explanation are clear, creative, and easy to understanding for students who are new to this area. I would like to recommend this book for all of students who have an interest in geostatistics and for experts too.

An excellent easy-to-read introduction to oilwell drilling
Written in a simple language, this book is accessible to readers who are not specifically familiar with oilwell drilling. Numerous photographs and drawings make it a very accurate description of the equipment and activities on and around a land rig floor. Corporate imperialism at its worst
This book provides an insightful history of how the Royal Shell Corporation and other oil companies have destroyed the environment and societies of the Niger Delta.The book starts with a short history of Western colonialism from the 1600s to the WWII.Starting with the discovery of oil post WWII, Shell Oil, along with Mobil, Texaco, Agip, BP and Chevron have replaced western governments as the de facto rulers of this region. The oil companies obtain oil from the Niger Delta, sell it, and use some of the profits to pay Nigerian government officials to safeguard their pipelines and oilwells in the country.The latter often includes torturing and killing locals who protest the pollution from oil drilling, flaring, and oil spills.All of this is glossed over by a multi-million dollar PR campaign by the Shell and the other oil companies.

Poor "facts" and citations cause this to lack credibility
In the first chapter, Mr. Leggett cites two "facts" which don't stand up to any reasonable scrutiny.
Interesting points, but poorly written and emotional
The topic of peak oil is receiving attention lately, and this book does its part to explain the story. The author's arguements for the early timing of the peak are not wholly convincing, as too much pertinent data is not available to clearly see the picture (as he notes). On the whole the book is written in very colloquial language, and uses an emotional style and language that works against building credibility for the author. Overall there are many interesting points here, but a serious edit is required to bring the quality of the writing up to a standard one would expect when discussing a scientific topic. There are definitely a few nuggets to follow up on if you can slog through the book.

Excellent review, well balanced view of Energy Issues we face
As an investor who continue to research this area, I found the book very concise and easy to read without the need for a technical background.A good summary of many related subjects in one book.I share the author's views on depletion and the long term advantages of renewables and its required support and adoption.However, I found his imminent doomsday scenario of a 1929 style depression triggered by 'an empty tank' to be without supporting analysis.If this is a 'wake up' call for industry and society to act, I am all for it. ... Succinct, focused, readable
For those of you who are just getting interested in the subject, David Goodstein's Out of Gas is the book you want to read first.I have read several books on the impending energy crisis, including:
Best introduction to fuel (oil) depletion I have read...
This book is a short read, so the review should be short, too.This is the best book on fuel depletion on the market, in my opinion: short, accurate, factual, non-polarizing, objective, useful, and scientifically correct.Reviewers who quibble over small stuff are missing the point.There is an annotated bibliography for those who want more.You can't go wrong with this one.

This book played fast with the facts
After reading this book, I sold my copy as a used book on Amazon --- and I almost never do this. I have read 5 books about the end of oil prior to reading OUT OF GAS, and I felt that the author played with the facts to make his point. Clearly, the author wanted the make the crisis that we are facing seem less urgent and dire than the other books on the topic. While I am not a scientist who has studied this topic first hand, I have studied books and other literature on this topic, and feel that other sources provide better information. Specifically, Hubbard's Peak is not as clearly explained here as in other books.
