This book is a repeat
The reason for the low rating is because this book is a repeat of Mr Garrett's book,"Let's Talk Treasure Hunting" which was first printed in 1992. Chapters and wording of "Treasure Hunting for Fun and Profit is practically identical.If you buy either book, there is no need to buy the other. These books have some information on the technics of metal detecting, but is more focused in the end in describing the kind of metal detector to use which is the Garrett detector...which is a great metal detector! ... Dr. Bartlett really enhanced the second edition, WOW.
This is a very readable intro to how mining is done today, and can be the best book you'll ever read if you are an operator or consultant in mining, environmental remediation... What a disappointment
When I read the abstract for this book I thougth I would pick up some information or process description that would help pick out the most economical scheme to process a given feedstock. Instead what I got was mostly a rehash of what I can get from Hydrocarbon processing without any hard numbers or equations to use. The author spends most of the time describing databases of process inoformation he has collected and how he went about correlating the results, but without ever bothering to print the correlations that were developed. Instead you get tables comparing the authors correlations to other correlations which also are not published. This does nothing to help you know how to predict the performance of a unit. ... could use a good proofreadin'
The book explained the field well, but it referred, more than once, to a non-existant 'further reading' section. It also referred to a list of acronyms, supposedly containted within, which wasn't in the book either. It could really use an editor. Could use a good proofreadin'

A good primer
Too many times over the years I've encountered treasure hunters who didn't know how to pan gold, didn't know how to evaluate a watercourse, didn't know how to recognize gold if they saw it.If you just want an excuse to go out into the wilderness for a few days of fun and solitude, or if you plan to search for the Dutchman or the Lost Adams, this is a good book to begin your education.

Old Time Prospecting History Lesson
If you want some interesting history of gold discovery and the way things used to be done, this is the book for you.As for myself, I was looking for modern methods ( I didn't check the publication date of 1982) but did find the history lesson interesting. Not much mention in this book about electronic gold prospecting! Some of the camping suggestions are a bit old but with a little modern adaptation they still work.Overall an easy, interesting read. ... Read more

Pipeline Rules of Thumb

Good source of practical knowledge.
For a long time I have been looking for a book like this one. Finally, I had found it. Just from the Table of Contents, you will see that includes a broad range of applications in parameter estimation such as: linear, non-linear, ODEs, PDEs and also algorithm's implementation. Special topics, such as sensitivity analysis in ODE models, Information index (where to do the measurements in order to maximize the content of information of the experimental data), and Statistical inference (i.e. parameters' inference, model adequacy test, etc.) are exposed with clarity.
