Excellent Textbook
This is an excellent book for it covers most of the aspects of drilling engineering. However, in some sense it is becoming outdated; it needs additional chapters on Novell Drilling techniques (Horizontal &Underbalanced drilling, Coiled tubing Drilling, MWD) chapter on drillingmuds should go more in depth, one example of preparing drilling program andsmall completion chapter would be a definite assett for this book.

This book provides a very detailed reference source for most aspects of drilling engineering. It covers everything from bit design to hydraulics to derived burst, collapse and tension equations for casing design. A good account of current western hardrock mining
The book deals with Western hardrock mining--molybdenum, copper, and uranium-- in
A Classic Work on Mining In America
Voynick pens a very well crafted account of the gritty work of America's unsung hard rock miners. As a former hard rock miner in a sister operation to the one where Voynick labored, I can vouch for the extreme authenticity of his account - from the wide range of characters, to the daily dangers, to the fatalistic approach to the work.
Really Good Book
I have read a lot of books in my 45 years, and I would have to say this is one of the best I have ever read. Believe it or not, it belongs with "On the Road", and "Bound for Glory". Not a lot of people know about this obscure mining tome. I think that this book richly deserves a wider circulation. It would be great if Oprah would promote this book. It is that good.

I got to help test-drive this textbook's material by being in a course taught by Dr. Lyons' as the book was being published, and let me tell you, this book is chock full of information about air & gas drilling.The detail is amazing, giving step-by-step examples in calculating flowrates of various drilling methods, such as aerated and foam drilling.Graphs are provided for different flowrates with all the major industry-standard drill pipes, and other helpful graphs such as geothermal gradient, surface temperature and pressure.Read more

Oil everywhere
I was very impressed Dr. Gold's crisp and persuasive arguments for the deep and non-biological origin of petroleum.Dr. Gold pictures the greater part of the Earth's biosphere infiltrating the rocks of the upper crust, where autotrophic bacteria feed on virtually limitless upwelling hydrocarbons from the planet's interior -- a hypothesis that culminated in the fascinating "Siljan" experiment in 1987, in which tens of millions of dollars were invested drilling a 5-mile well into the granite of Switzerland in search of non-biological hydrocarbons.Dr. Gold states that crude oil and other hydrocarbons were recovered from rocks where conventional geology said they could not exist.Unfortunately, this may not meet Carl Sagan's threshold of "extraordinary evidence," since his work seems to have been largely ignored by modern geologists.Nevertheless, this tightly reasoned and polished book made a believer out of me.Among other fascinating statements, Dr. Gold believes the world's oil reserves are actually slowly "recharging," and that life originated within the Earth's crust.I certainly recommend this book to anybody with an interest in oil, geology or the origin of life.
Scientific theory, or maybe just true !!
As a geologist familiar with the traditional theories about accumulations of oil and related gases in structural domes, I was skeptical of Gold's theories.But the more I read, the more I became convinced his explanations of facts that went unaccounted for using the old theories had some merit.Of course, the only problem with his theory is that we will never be able to prove it.To prove it we would have to drill at least 200 kilometers down into the earth.But his five assumptions are valid and not disproveable.Plus, I read a recent newspaper article that scientists have found evidence of a deep unidentified source of methane gas.As a scientist you can poo poo it, but hey, wait until all evidence comes in, at least give the author that much respect. Recommended for those scientists who have an open mind.

Read with an open mind
Thomas Gold's book is highly intriguing and worth the effort to absorb. Since it was first published, field research has confirmed the Earth does have a deep, hot microbial ecosystem that extends as far as observations have gone to date. Several recent lines of field and laboratory evidence support the contention that some portion of Earth's hydrocarbons are formed by non-biological processes. In my opinion he pushes his thesis past the bounds of accepted evidence by suggesting that little, if any of the known oil and natural gas deposits were formed by the deep burial of surface organisms in sedimentary rock formations. Until much more definitive evidence is available, a model that allows for hydrocarbons of biological and nonbiological origin provides the best fit for all of the evidence. Most of the fascination with this book seems to stem from its implication that commercially exploitable oil deposits will not dwindle in the forseeable future and therefore everybody can continue driving huge gas-wasting vehicles and spewing pollutants into the atmosphere with wild abandon. Gold's one weakness is that he fails to mention the obvious and serious consequences of unchecked burning of fossil fuels: worsening air pollution and more risk of disastrous impacts of climate change. This book does not make me want to buy a Hummer and leave it idling all night because oil will never run out, but unfortunately it appears to send this message to some people. A more sober, forward-thinking and responsible approach to reading this book is that regardless of the source and magnitude of oil deposits on Earth the consequences of continued and massive combustion of oil will have a far greater impact on future generations than than a 30 cent difference in the price of gasoline in 2050. ... Bible of Fluid petroleum engineers
working in a research institute specialized in oil industry, i find this book always a reference.. and though i have read it, studied it several times.. it keeps on capturing me and helping me. i highly recommend this book, it s amust have for a petroleum engineer.
