A tough read but a worthwhile one
Hubbert's Peak: The Impending World Oil Shortage is not an easy read, but it is an important one if you really want to understand why some knowledgable people are trying to warn us about the end of cheap oil. The author, Kenneth Deffeyes, is thoroughly grounded in his material on both the academic and the professional level, having literally grown up in the oil field, worked for some of the largest oil companies in the world, and having taught at Princeton University. He also has the more unique qualification of having actually studied under and worked with M. King Hubbert himself. The problem with his book, however, is that it is written as if presuming that the reader already has some background in both geology and statistics. At less than 200 pages, it is not a particularly long book, but it is rather dense in places, leaving the reader frequently wishing he could interrupt the lecture and ask questions before moving on.
Erroneous from the Very First Sentence
If the reader knew absolutely nothing about oil production and read this book, then he or she would believe his claim that global production of crude oil will decline permanently in the very near future.Deffeyes takes his cue from price fluctuations, and I, knowing nothing about petroleum exploration and refining and hearing a lot about 'Peak Oil' (made popular by such conspiratorial tomes as The Grand Chessboard, The Party's Over and Crossing the Rubicon), keep hearing that little statistician's nagging voice in my head, saying: Technically Dense but Rewarding
I agree with some other reviewers, that the initial chapters are a bit intense technically.However, I think the book is worth the effort.It paints a very detailed picture on how unusual oil deposits really are, and how thorough the search has been to find the "elephants" or big deposits.Also, it really gets you to understand the oil exploration and drilling business.For me, I found that very interesting.

A must on your professional library
This book and the companion volumes are some of the best tools available for process engieers in the design business. Ludwig has been able to capture a balance between the theory and the real world.An excellentapplication book highly illustrated and with excellent method summaries andexamples.

Goodbye Dino-poo oil theory. Vast oil reserve found miles below Gulf of Mexico floor.
Last week's report of oil discovered in igneous rock many miles beneath the floor of the Gulf of Mexico led me to re-visit this avant-guarde 1999 book.
Thought provoking and just plain provocative!
It is easy to make extraordinary claims. It is much harder to back them up with extraordinary proof. While it can't be declared yet that Gold has cleared that bar, he can't be dismissed as a crackpot, either. This is a well-written, well-reasoned book that deserves wide circulation. Its implications are far-ranging in geographic and temporal scope.

Decimating info for peak oil parrots
This book just decimates all the peak oil myths.I'm glad of this, despite being born and raised in one of the most prolific oil producing areas outside of the Middle East.This info (when proven correct) will hurt the economy there immeasurably, but if it benefits our species, then so be it.The gargantuan wealth generated by oil over the last 50 or so years is obscene, which is no doubt one of the reasons why Saudi Arabia is virtually closed to outsiders.If only more of humanity knew of what goes on there...When I lived in Japan I knew someone who was an oil executive in Saudi, and the stories were outrageous in terms of materialism.Literally offensive.The kind of display and arrogance that just rubs your face into it, then stomps on your throat.The greed must stop and the info in this book is a powerful push towards that goal.The Russians knew much of the info well before Thomas Gold and have benefitted and prospered in their own right.In fact, they have sold their ideas and deep drilling technology to a number of other countries (which all just happen to be on America's sh-t list) who now export oil for huge profit.Be that as it may, this book can be a bit of a technical read in parts, but well worth the insights attained.Despite taking training in geology and biochemistry myself, Mr. Gold explains things and bridges the gap in unique ways that will cause many light bulbs to burn brightly above your head. ...
