5-0 out of 5 stars Memoir of a Technician at Los Alamos
McAllister Hull had a distinguished career as a nuclear physicist and university administrator but in the fall of 1944 he arrived at Los Alamos to work as an explosives technician. His story of how that happened gives a view of the Manhattan project different from the well told histories of the eminent scientists and military leaders.Hull knew who Oppenheimer and Groves were but his role was a niche producing critical chemical explosive components at the more isolated S-site.For that matter he knew Klaus Fuchs with out any idea of the Soviet connection.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Huizenga Will Have To Write a New Book
Since Dr. Huizenga wrote this scathing book against Cold Fusion, so much has happened in the field.Even the U.S. Navy revealed in the Spring, 2003 that they have been clandestinely researching Cold Fusion for a decade.Their conclusion?Cold Fusion is real and it warrants an official government funded research effort.Dr. Huizenga, well meaning or not, missed the boat on Cold Fusion. It's too bad he put his closed-minded scientific views in writing for the whole world to see.I wonder if he'll be writing a new book when Cold Fusion re-emerges into the scientific mainstream in coming years?Cold Fusion is being replicated all around the world, and the skeptics are just flat-earthers at this point.

2-0 out of 5 stars Story Lost in the Details
I grew up in Richland and went to Hanford High School during the Reagan/Bush years.I found her book interesting, but it seemed to lack the details I was trying to learn more about, primarily the role of HEAL and other citizen action groups to promote more honesty about the dangers of plutonium production.Growing up around "the Area" I found not a lot of awareness about these issues and even found myself avoiding them for the last twenty years of my life! Her book brought back to me the mindset of the area that allows that kind of cloud. She gives only one or two sentences each for HEAL and the Downwinders, without whose work she would not have had the material for her book.None at all to the incredible journalism of Steele at the Spokesman Review and no mention of the whistle blower Casey Ruud.I found that lapse pretty typical of Hanfordization.I remember my Physics teacher telling our class that automobile engines were more dangerous than spent uranium fuel which could be used to power everything in the future.I guess he didn't really consider the use of dirty bombs, <sigh> . . . I found the book Atomic Harvest more informative.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative, interesting, and a good digest...
Dr. Gerber reduced the thousands of documents, memos, and misc data declassified reguarding the Hanford Area and the surrounding region from the very beginning of the Manhattan Project.Having lived there for a majority of my life in what was once the "Richland Village" and going to a high school with a mascot of the Bombers, this book was particularly interesting to me. It also allowed me to carry intelligent conversation with my grandfather (who worked there from the 50's till the 80's). Highly technical in parts but with some explaination, I reccommend you read a bit about radioactivity and geology to assist your understanding of the content. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best overview of nuclear power yet written.
This is the rarest sort of book -one that is totally accessible to the beginner interested in learning more about nuclear power, but so filled with details and specifics that it is both enjoyable and informative for the reader that already knows quite a bit about the topic. The book is mainly valuable for addressing the politics surrounding the debate about nuclear power in America, and contrasting public perceptions with very well researched facts. This is the best single compendium of facts, figures, and political events surrounding nuclear power that I have seen.Replete with history to explain exactly how different aspects of the current technological and political situations came about. The book was later made into a PBS documentary, which is seldom rebroadcast -perhaps because the conclusions that Rhodes reaches through his research puts him at odds with many PBS regular viewers? An excellent book.Typical of Rhodes' thorough but readable style.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not enough specific solutions
I have read Richard Rhodes other books "The Making of the Atomic Bomb and Dark Sun; both of them are excellent books and should be read by anyone who wants to understand the history of the 20th century. This book was good but I would have like to have known more of the new types of reactors they are making that are inherently safe.He did not even mention TRIGA which is used all over the world. Why can't that be made on a power plant scale. Editorial Review

On June 26, 1995 the people of Golf Manor, Michigan returned from work to find a federal EPA crew dismantling a potting shed in Patty Hahn's back yard. In subsequent days, the crew, wearing protective suits, carted away the refuse in sealed barrels emblazoned with radiation symbols. The EPA workers refused to disclose what was happening, only offering vague reassurance that everything was ok. Ken Silverstein shows that things in Golf Manor were not, in fact, ok. David Hahn, a 17-year-old aspiring Eagle Scout, had constructed the rudiments of a nuclear breeder reactor in his backyard and had contaminated himself and the immediate area with potentially deadly radioactive material. In his brief, briskly-paced account of the events, Silverstein weaves together science, history, and testimony from David and his family in a tale both frightening and tragic.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating book, somewhat scientifically inaccurate
Overall, this was a very interesting book that was had to put down. It could have benefited if it was edited by someone with a scientific background, however.
3-0 out of 5 stars fascinating....what a teen will do with an interest
David Hahn, the teen mentioned, became fascinated by nuclear energy. He took his home research to the point that his research created a nuclear waste site in his own backyard...literally.
5-0 out of 5 stars I loved it!
I loved this book.I l.o.v.e.d. this book. It is the story of a bored, repressed, neglected, secretive, obsessive teenager with enough chemistry and physics knowledge to build a breeder reactor in his backyard garden shed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alfred Marcus, professor of strategy and technological leadership Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesot
This is profoundly important work on the culture of safety, written from an anthropologists perspective which deconstructs the meaning of people in nuclear power plants who see extreme risk around them all the time and have created devices to identify threats and respond, sometimes more appropriately than others. I highly recommend this boo.

3-0 out of 5 stars A unique presentation
I read this book in an effort to better understand the civilian nuclear industry (which I have worked in since 1986). Having held various technical and management positions in the US Navy nuclear program and civilian nuclear industry, my experience is broad enough to conclude that Constance Perin has done her homework. She brings a cultural anthropologist's view to the management of risk at nuclear power stations, which are often run by and for technocrats, so her perspective is refreshing. She takes a balanced approach and appears to have no personal agenda regarding nuclear power. Much of what she says rings true, although I found her writing style to be stilted and distracting. I do not recommend SHOULDERING RISKS for anyone looking for a casual read, but it is worth the effort for those seeking to learn more about humans perceive and manage risks in complex, high-stakes environments. ...
