5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Overview of Nuclear Power as of 2003
This book is slightly marred by a somewhat fuzzy Afterword and reuse of identical language when the same information is repeated in different sections leading to a jarring sense of deja vue for one reading it cover-to-cover (As I did).
4-0 out of 5 stars Essential for any decent library
Every university library in the UK and USA should have a copy of this; and every college teaching any kind of technology and society qualification.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most important books on the environment.
For anyone who is at all interested in the environment, or the American West, or issues of nuclear waste, this book is a must.Kuletz does something that is lacking in our radio, t.v., news magazine, and newspaperreports on environmental issues--she reveals the cultural biases in ourWestern, "objective" perspective. She also listens and presentsthe testimony of Native Americans on their desert homelands. This belongson the bookshelf with Rachel Carson's _Silent Spring_ and CaroleGallagher's _American Ground Zero_. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Unsatisfying
Following the introduction, each chapter is an interview with a string-theory advocate (and non-advocate: Feynman) recorded for the BBC in 1987. If Davies actually did the interviews, he plays the role of interested layman well. 5-0 out of 5 stars High standard radio program.
BBC program consisting of interviews with well known physicists about 'superstrings'.4-0 out of 5 stars Good introdution, a bit dated.
This little book is a must for those interested in superstring theory. Those who have read books like "the elegant universe" should complement with this one. It gives a historical prespective, but unfortunately is a bit dated, given that it was originally published in 1988. String theory moves real fast, and a lot of things viewed as problems in the book are now somewhat clarified.Read more

Editorial Review

Thomas E. Patterson, a professor of political science at Syracuse University, argues that the process of electing presidents to office is "out of order." The culprits include poorly planned performances by the news media in which newscasters speak more than candidates and the numerous primaries that only weaken the parties and create a vacuum of political leadership. Patterson calls for a shortened nominating primary season--just six weeks--and an institutionalized televised forum in which candidates could speak, debate and be questioned. Until this is done, he maintains, American will suffer from a lack of communication of the issues and an incomplete translation of voter feedback, things that smack of the demise of democracy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
This book is a must-read for any student of the media or politics.Thomas Patterson writes a terrific critique of the role the media has played in corrupting politics - particularly the political election process - arguing persuasively that things are now "out of order."Patterson provides numerous examples of how the media has negatively impacted elections. Some of these are:
3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad
My jerk, hippy, liberally biased professor made Out of Order a required reading. So I went into it expecting to cringe with disagreement.A nice surprise to me, what Patterson had to say was well thought out and really made a lot of good points about the media and its role in elections. It was a bit repetitive at times but I don't even care because it was the only book that I didn't loathe reading in my government class.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must have
This book was required reading for a seminar and I found it very beneficial in understanding the strained relationship between two groups with conflicting goals:the media and elected officials.

5-0 out of 5 stars All You Need to Understand Nuclear
Although the topic is highly technical, it is written in a manner that is very understandable to a newbie reader. He explains some very complicated technical aspects in a clear and simple way using very helpful illustrations. This book is a great primer on nuclear energy.Covers the topic top to bottom.Kudos to the author.

5-0 out of 5 stars first rate
As is my usual habit, I feel compelled to review the book before I have completed it.However, I think I have absorbed the core of the material, having read 2/3 of it at this point.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is a very interesting book, Mr. Heaberlin provides a comprehensive overview of nuclear technology in a fair and realistic light. He touches on the basics of nuclear science and reactor physics without getting to technical. He also gives a description of all the major forms of energy and stresses the importance of energy in our society. He also unveils the truth about some bad things we hear about nuclear technology in the news media and from the movie industry. I also liked his use of charts and graphs to get his point across. He gives plenty of figures on our power consumption, the amount of radiation we are exposed to naturally every day, and the efficiencies of various energy sources. The author imparts that we seem to be on the downhill end of fossil fuels, all the best hydro-electric sites are taken and don't show much future promise, and further shows how insignificant and undependable wind and solar power are for mass energy generation, and how incapable they are of "saving the planet" which those environmentalists try ever-so-hard to make us believe. Scott is one of the few Americans who does not merely point a finger at the worlds problems, but is one who offers rational solutions. He is also one of the few who does not make exorbitant statements in order to capture public imagination and make attempt to decieve people into seeing things his way but instead he presents the facts and has faith that people are smart enough to make the right decision for themselves. This is a great book, but I doubt a copy will every come across any of those greenpeace fanatics that really need to read it. The book is a very easy read, not dry or sciency at all, Scott holds your hand through the whole thing. The only negitive thing i would have to say about this book is that the author seems to be an advocate of global warming and uses it in his case for why nuclear power should be a more important player in power generation. In spite of that its a great book, definitely 5 stars, I recommend for anyone unfamilar with the subject. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good arguments on both sides
Leventhal summarises a workshop in 2001 that argued whether nuclear proliferation and nuclear power were separable. The book has strong, articulate arguments for and against this claim. Whatever your current views on this issue, you might profitably gain by reading the book. It does not present straw dummies on one side.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview and Powerful Source of Information
This book is an excellent overview about Probabilistic Safety Assessment. In this case applied in Chemical and Nuclear Industries. The references are complete, but in some cases are not updated. A very well overview about data, methods and software used in this analysis is done. The relevant incidents in both industries are explain in special chapters.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book
This book takes you right into the Chernobyl disaster. From the bungling government and perverse incentives placed on the nuclear engineer teams which made it a disaster just waiting to happen, to the clean up, evacuation (largely also botched) and health effects of the nuclear fallout.
3-0 out of 5 stars Is there really No Breathing Room?
I thought this was a very good novel.I used this on several occations as a document for research papers I have wrote on the subject of Nuclear power and Chernobyl. The author is very accurate and shows the world what goes on behind the scenes.

3-0 out of 5 stars A little too technical for me.
I bought this book hoping for a general introduction to the explosion, its causes and its aftermath. The book does contain such information, but it's buried underneath a heavy layer of technical detail that can be, at times, mind-numbingly boring. Unless you are a nuclear engineer or otherwise interested in the minutiae of the reactor's workings, I'd skip this book. ... Read more
