1-0 out of 5 stars Dear Me
Perhaps I was taken in by the 5-star average review of this book when I bot it, or seduced by the reviewer who claimed even a raw beginner could profit by reading it. I should have been more cautious when one reviewer said that it was not for the timid or faint of heart.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinated by cosmology.
It included a Eureka moment for me, t' Hooft sets the elementary particles into a sensible context in his smart particle tables, it was one of those "I get it" moments, in which strange quarks (and the rest) just made sense.5-0 out of 5 stars A honest, independent and anti-irrational popularizing book
Gerard t'Hooft is a surprisingly rare example of a rational physicist who is not-so-willing to support all those main-stream paradoxical and irrational claims which often saturate works of some celebrated theoretical physicists. Consequently, Dr. t'Hooft is not so popular among the fashionable camp of string mystics, but rather remains an idependently thinking theorist of Einstein's or Jaynes' scientific ethics.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars UNDER THE CLOUD
I remember in the 50's and 60's being taught to get under my desk in case of a nuclear blast and to stay inside in case of nuclear fallout. Naturally this would only come from Russia and even our small town in Wyoming had a fallout shelter, we thought this was great as our state had several ICBM silos. After reading this book I was once again educated on the perils of nuclear fallout, NOT ONLY WAS IT ALL OVER THE USA, IT WAS MEASURED BY OUR GOVERNMENT AND AT NO TIME WAS ANYONE WARNED TO STAY INSIDE OR TAKE ANY PRECAUTIONS REGUARDING, FOOD, WATER OR LIVESTOCK. This is a crime against humanity and the fallout is still with us in the extremely high cancer rates that follow the fallout maps. The most incredible thing about this book is that it really happened and the American people were and still are totally uninformed. How many RADS were you exposed to? Check it out!

5-0 out of 5 stars Under the CloudR.L. Miller
As one who has lived very close to this subject for nearly half a century, I find 'Under the Cloud' by R.L.Miller THE most exhaustive andcomprehensive examination of our atmospheric nuclear testing program I haveever found. It's a facinating read, I've read it cover to cover, everysingle word, at least twice. The extensive fallout maps, the juxtaposing of1950's social factors alongside the myriad of events (shots) provides thehistorian as well as the curious, with an insight not only to what wedid, but why we did it.'Under the Cloud' will make you feel like you'rehuddled in the trench 7000 yards from Ground Zero or having a cocktail in'Doomtown' waiting for Apple II.If you only read one book on our NuclearTesting Program, or can only have one book on this subject in yourlibrary,EVER, make sure it's 'Under the Cloud'. Order it now, but beadvised, you're not going to put it down until the last page.

4-0 out of 5 stars Makes nuclear physics exciting to read!
This book is great for people with little knowledge about nuclear phyiscs and the Cold war.Miller writes in a way that makes you feel apart of the action. He gives great insight into the lives of the scientists, civilians, political leaders, and armed forces during nuclear testing inthe 1940's.If science is a hard subject for you to understand, this bookwill enlighten you mind and brighten your hopes in understanding thesubject. ... In this book you can find both a very brief and clear introduction to the theoretical picture ofQuantum Chromodynamics (QCD) and lots of phenomenological applications. It contains descriptions and data of manyparticles processes as some important exact calculations. It should be ofinterest to graduate students who intend to work in QCD. It is suggestedknowledge of elementary particles physics and field theory.I liked thisbook because it gave to me a comprehensive overview of the physics ofhigh-energy colliders. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A close look at quantum chromodynamics
The Quantum Quark is a close look at quantum chromodynamics that does not require an extensive mathematics or physics background of the reader. Freelance science journalist and regular contributor to "Science" magazine Andrew Watson explores such topics as the quantum world, "the gregarious gluon", quarks and hadrons, the true significance of the vacuum state, and much more. A handful of black-and-white diagrams and photographs illustrate this fascinating tour of scientific theory, recommended for anyone with even the most casual interest in understanding the fundamental particles composing the Universe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great testbook for Nuclear Reactor Analysis
This is a great introductory textbook for Nuclear Reactor Analysis/ One-Speed diffusion model/Multigroup Diffusion method and core design. It was published a while ago - in 1976, but remains to be one of the best textbook on the topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for the Intermediate Nuclear Engineer Student
This book is one of the two "Bibles" of Nuclear Engineering.LaMarsh's "Introduction to Nuclear Engineering" is the other IMHO.For those interested in a broad overview of Nuclear Engineering, it is my opinion that you should start with the LaMarsh book.Duderstadt's book contains a lot more math and can be difficult to follow without some solid math background and a few Nuc Eng courses under your belt. There are a few cases in the book where a series of equations leading to a conclusion skip a few steps. It's not as bad as the old "A=B and from this we see that e = mc2!" joke, but some work is required.5-0 out of 5 stars _Nuclear Reactor Analysis_: A Good Place to Start
A good, solid, book for a undergraduate student in nuclear engineering or anyone with a physical sciences background who is interested in learningmore about nuclear power operations and analysis. Very clear text with plenty of information on topics (i.e., reactor design) that often confuse students. -Mike Walker Thorsvedtt ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing analysis
For a long time I have been looking for a book with a coherent and convincing analysis on successful self-regulation.Well, perhaps any type of successful regulation.Books on regulatory failure are much easier to come by. And this book had such a promising setting. The claim: A single catastrophic accident at any one US nuclear plant would have ruinous consequences for the entire industry. Each licencee is a hostage of every other licencee.Safety pays!Result: the nuclear industry has founded the INPO organization, to police uniform high safety standards, simply to protect industry's huge investment in nuclear power.
5-0 out of 5 stars Persuasive Argument For Communitarian Regulation
Joseph Rees has written a superior account of the improvements in nuclear systems safety since the Three Mile Island accident. Without getting too deep into the technical details of nuclear systems or chemistry (other than a basic explanation of the general theory of plant operation and a bit of detail about the faulty PORV design), Rees analyzes TMI from a human factors and safety systems vantage point, and subsequently details the improvements made to the US nuclear power industry since the accident.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hostages of Each Other
This book is about how the Nuclear Energy Industry "bootstrapped" itself to improve operational and nuclear safety after the TMI accident. Prior to TMI, the NRC had been enforcing minimumsafety requirements, not promoting operational excellence. The industryrealized it might not economically survive another TMI, and while thefundamental design of the plants appeared to be safe, significantoperational improvements were needed to reduce the chance another similaraccident. The industry formed INPO (the Institute for Nuclear PowerOperations) to share information and resources to promote excellence andsafety in operations. The book is full of stories of what happened andquotes from the principles involved (no heavy technical stuff) and I foundit an enjoyable, interesting read. The author is a professor at the Centerfor Public Policy at Virginia Tech, and I detected no pro or anti-nukesentiment, just lots of well researched information. Probably the best bookI have read on the subject. ... Read more
