Excellent Book
This is an excellent book.The engineering, materials, and physics information applicable to running common machining operations is covered.Formulas which explain how to choose what speed to run a tool at are covered.It has helped me correct problems I have had from running metal machining tools at the wrong speed.Be sure to buy both volumes.

Carl Sommer Pioneer in EDM Publishing
Most of the wire EDM information in Non-Traditional Machining Handbook came from the author's Wire EDM Handbook which was first published in 1992, it was not copied from Bud Guitrau's book. Bud Guitrau's book was published in 1997.

Almost a copy!
I did not like this book because the EDM section is almost a complete rip-off of E. Bud Guitrau's "The EDM Handbook". The paragraphs are in practically the same order and Mr. Guitrau's graphics have just been merely redone. Examine both books side by side and see for yourself. I am surprised Mr. Guitrau or his publisher has not sued the author of this book. It seems the author should stick to writing children's books as that seems to be his strengths ... Read more

Power Up!
My job recently started to include quite a bit of Electrical Engineering such as generator sizing.I also needed to specify motor controls and electrical filters to avoid interference, and other electrical issues which I had a poor understanding of. I had suppliers and contractors asking me questions like I was some kind of electrical guru.
Comprehensive but lacking detail, some errors in answers

I think its a good book !
I had engineering science program years ago , but not much electrial circuits- just the basics. I bought this book for self-study. I read through the first eight chapters and worked a lot of the problems without much problem. I then read the chapters on the smaller electric motors and some about controls. Its not a begineers self-study book. If you have the background you can learn from this book;however, I had to read some of the material over several times to understand it. I still didn't feel like I had a good understanding about the basics of electric motors. Like how to wire them up, how to read the nameplate and so forth. This book is for the classroom and lab. It has a lot of information. My local university uses it in their technology program for three different courses I think. ... Read more

A Good Book for Apprentices
I recommend this book to any apprentice or student locksmith.But the title is misleading: "Locksmithing from Apprentice to Master."There's nothing in it for a master locksmith.

A Disappointed Reader
I'm co-owner of a locksmith shop, and am always on the lookout for good books for reference and to train new people. Usually TAB locksmith books are pretty decent, but "from Apprentice to Master" is weak. Itdoesn't have much to say its 300 plus pages. I don't see it as tootechnical at all. smart reference book, easy to read
After using Shigley & Mischkes' "Mechanical Engineering Design" for years,a colleague of mine loaned me this book.In comparison to "Mechanical Engineering Design," Deutschman,Michels, and Wilsons' "Machine Design, Theory and Practice" is amuch easier (and quicker) read.I only wish my professors in school hadchosen this textbook instead of the 'Shigley' title. Information in"Machine Design" goes into great detail for given, specificapplications. An example of this would be shown in the text's explanationof Stub Acme & Buttress Threads (used extensively in my industry). Maybe not scientific, but that's not the point anyway...
Several have criticized Dyson's philosophical and historical treatise "Darwin Among the Machines" for not articulating exactly how a global intelligence might emerge from today's synthetic biological and computational networks. But as Dyson says in the preface, the past is where we find answers, and the future merely a fog of questions "to which the answers are up to us." In the next 200 pages, Dyson explores the history of an idea: that man will someday create a form of artificial life, with intelligence that may match or exceed our own.
EDVAC, Turing, Von Newmann, IAS.
EDVAC architecture by Von Newmann changed the world.Von Newmann chose to adopt the McCulloh-Pitts symbolism for diagramming logical structures of stored program codes.EDVAC had the ability to modify its own instructions similar too the theoretical Turing machine.EDVAC stored both data and instructions in mercury delay-line memory as binary and as in the Turing Universal Machine, long strings of bits represented numbers to be operated on and sequenced and potential dynamic structures of operations to be performed, such as bit shifting, multiplexing, Boolean logic, memory storage, and accumulation.
Not entirely satisfying
Though well written and informative, in the endDAM was a less than satisying read.Dyson marshals considerable data (and extensive and informative quotes) from the fields of history (of science and technology), the sciences (principally evolution and CS), and philosophy (as it has, historically, reflected on notions of mind and evolution).As an avid reader of history, with a deep interest in all of these subjects, I found the opening chapters of DAM quite interesting.That said, the history in DAM is not particularly deep.But Dyson writes well, and I appreciate his having shed light on several lesser known (and underappreciated) historical figures along the way.

Review of Slurry Systems Handbook
I found this book to be well written, informative and well organized. The book seems to stand alone as a practical concise reference. There was a well developed theoretical section and several practical design sections.

Poorly written, disappointing.
The author seems to have no graduate level education.This book is filled with empirical equations and has no academic deapth.The author himself does not know where each equations come from.Most of the exerciseproblems are the exact copy from other books.There is no referencelisted, and it seems a violation of copywrite.Too many typos and wronglydrawn figures bother readers.This book is a waste of time and money. ... Great ref book!!
I found the handbook a great reference to all types of vacuum systems. I especially liked information regarding building materials used in vacuum systems. Helps one suck
For a mere 160 dollars, I'll never be excited by anything, ever again.Perhaps later in life, when it really becomes important for me to build my own vacuum cleaner, McGyver style, this will be a cherished memory of mine.Read more
