An invaluable intellectual and cultural history of technology
Lewis Mumford's, Technics and Civilization, may be one of the most important and influential works concerning technological progress in Western Civilization and its cultural and environmental effects.The study covers a wide area of historical past stretching from the Roman Empire all the way to the present (1934).The importance of Mumford's study lies in the fact that it is not just another technophilic antiquarian study of technological improvement but rather it is an intelligent and highly critical look at the cultural development that gave rise to the machine and, from there, a critical study of how the "progress"of the machine affected the culture it was developing within.Mumford shows how the progression of the machine has affected nearly every aspect of human society including but not limited to sexuality, economy, ecology, warfare, occurrence of disease, and medicine.

This book is a historical interpretation of the effect of technology on society.Mumford traces the Industrial Revolution to its earliest roots, which he argues, go back to the invention of reliable timepieces in the Eleventh Century (whose invention was motivated, according to Mumford, by the need for recognizing prayer times in Catholic monasteries). Mumford also stresses the effects mining, the military, and the production of arms had on each other and on the development of technology, from earliest recorded history through modern times.Another recurrent theme is power, and how discoveries of new ways to harness power led to economic development. The final part of the book discusses the invention and assimilation of "the machine," as a generic concept for an advanced technology item. The book is illustrated with several sections of black-and-white photographs and reproductions of artwork.End material includes a chronology of inventions, a lengthy annotated bibliography, and an index.
Worth the time spent reading!
Mumford has got to be one of the most over-looked (by main-stream) social critics of our time. He covers and unravels our confusing society so well, even though this book was written some time ago. Mumford's points ring quite true even in the 21st century.Read more

Excellent book on all aspects of power electronics
Power electronics is the technology associated with the efficient conversion, control and conditioning of electric power by static means from its available input form into the desired electrical output form. This conversion is performed with semiconductor switching devices such as diodes, thyristors and transistors. In contrast to electronic systems concerned with transmission and processing of signals and data, in power electronics substantial amounts of electrical energy are processed. The authors at MIT designed this text specifically to teach the subject of power electronics. Although the coverage is broad, they develop topics in sufficient depth to expose the fundamental principles, concepts, techniques, methods, and circuits necessary for the reader to understand and design power electronic systems as diverse as a 5 Watt switching converter and a 600 MWatt high-voltage DC transmission terminal. Topics include an introduction, form and function (topology), introduction to rectifier circuits, bridge and polyphase rectifier circuits, phase-controlled converters, high-frequency switching dc/dc converters, isolated high-frequency dc/dc converters, variable-frequency dc/ac converters, resonant converters, ac/ac converters, dynamics and control, state-space models, linear and piecewise linear models, feedback control design, components, review of semiconductor devices, power diodes, power transistors, thyristors, magnetic components, ancillary issues, gate and base drives, thyristor commutation circuits, snubber circuits and clamps, and thermal modeling and heat sinking. There are plenty of instructive diagrams shown throughout the book, and the only thing I can really say against it is that part two of the book entitled "Dynamics and Control" seems out of place in this book, since it really has nothing much to do with the subject of power electronics and seems to disrupt the flow of what is otherwise an excellent book.Also, it is very hard to cover the subject of dynamics and control adequately in just the four chapters allocated to the subject.

A good text book
This book approaches the subject from a scientific point of view rather than an industrial one, which is typical of such a book. The discussions are based on research literature published by well known people in the field of cemented carbides. This book will be helpful for advanced students, and researchers. However, some more data on commercial brands of cemented carbides (a more elaborate discussion in Chapter 14, and 16 on how to select grades for a particular application) would make it better.

A book I can relate to.
