Nice but incomplete
A very nice history of fluids and the scientists who Historical episodes but without physical insight.
I bought this book hoping for an undemanding, intuitive, intro to fluid physics.Was sorely disappointed.The author does highlight somecurious episodes in the history of fluids, and agitates for the priority claims ofcertain under-rated scientists.He does quote from some of the seminalpapers, e.g., those of Archimedes, Newton, etc.But his commentary doesnot in any wise help even a trained theoretical physicist to decipher thephysics behind these arcane old documents.I had to struggle entirely onmy own, since his physical remarks added zero to my understanding.Don'tread this expecting any Feynmanesque ability to shed a keen light on theprocesses or equations--Tokaty is no help at all.The author's historicalaccount, though vigorous and polemical, may be lacking in accuracy, e.g.,he completely confuses the great thermodynamicist Sadi Carnot with hispolitician father!! So don't expect much beyond a colorful mix of keyhistorical developments.Figures and photos are a plus. ... Read more

Great Introduction for graduate fluid flow

This book gives an excellent summary of viscous flow and is a valuable addition to any engineers bookshelf. A good knowledge of fluid mechanic fundamentals is essential to understand the material presented. This bookis definitely not for a freshman. The author quickly covers the fundamentalequations of fluid motion and then proceeds to discuss the viscous flow andboundary layer theory. Laminar boundary layers, transition, turbulentboundary layers and compressible boundary layers each receive a chapter.Each topic is reviewed and examples are given. The treatment is a littleterse, which makes reading the book a tough job. Alot of excellentreferences are given and I would advise anybody serious about viscous flowto review this material as Whites treatment can be skimpy. The chapter onturbulent flow provides an excellent summary of useful empiricalcorrelations and an introduction to the K-epsilon model.In summary, thisis an excellent and reasonably comprehensive reference book(weak onboundary layers in rotating flows), but a poor book to learn from.

One of the better Fluid Mechanics textbooks
"Viscous Fluid Flow" is quite thorough and well thought out.I won't go so far as to say that it reads like a novel, but it flows quite nicely.This book is for senior undergraduate or first-year graduates.The topics contained within are quite advanced in comparison to typical undergraduate Fluid Mechanics.The only problem I had with this text is that at times (not often) the hierarchy of the topics would get jumbled.For example, the explanation for a topic might come before the topic was even introduced leading to some confusion.Regardless, this textbook is REQUIRED for the bookshelf of any serious Fluid Dynamicist. ... Computational Fluid Dynamics
This is a very easy book to read.Anderson not only explains the computational methods, he covers the basics and explains the relevance of the equations and terms.This book addresses the needs for people with little background on this subject.I recommend it for any novice interested in obtaining a basic introduction to CFD.

Great introduction to CFD!!
This is one of the best books I have read on CFD.Dr. Anderson divided the book into 3 sections: Basic Equations, Numerical Concepts, and Do-It-Yourself examples.Each section is very detailed and easy to follow.The only thing that could improve this great book is to include a CD with the examples.I recommand this book for all CFD beginners!

Best Fluid Book Ever
This is the clearest book on fluid dynamics that I've seen. It's perfect for physics students who need a quick review of the subject. It does an amazing job of relating the math to the reality. Many of the problems make reference to research as recent as the 1980's. This book isn't the last word on anything (for example the information on instability is only the beginning), but it's an amazing place to start. As for the down sides, the math requirements in my opinion are a little steeper than the back cover implies. It pretty much assumes that you know complex variables and the residue theorem, and although it avoids the more difficult PDEs, it might help to know some things about them. And this isn't really a down side, but a lot of interesting information is tied to the problems, which may bother some readers.

Very pedagogical fluid dynamics book
This book is one of the most stimulating books on fluid mechanics that Ihave come across. It is very carefully written and well organized. Thephysics behind the phenomena are vividly explained. The subject is,however, mathematically difficult and the book should not be attemptedwithout advanced calculus and vector analysis.
