Bible of Particle Dynamics in Low Re!!
Low Reynolds Number Hydrodynamics by Happel and Brenner is one of the most useful texts ever written (in the field of the same name), and is essential reading for everyone working in this area. This includes researchers studying motion of colloidal particles say during sedimentation or through NEMS devices, cell motility and motion of bacteria, microfluidics, microrheology of complex fluids, etc. The book first introduces the required concepts of Fluid Mechanics, and proceeds to detail the theorems and derivations of how Navier Stokes equation is simplified into creeping flow equations, the hydrodynamics ofsingle particles of different shapes and sizes moving in unbounded fluid, the hydrodynamic interaction during motion of assembly of particles, the all effect and ends with a discussion of viscosity of particulate media.

good book ; bad translation
this is a classic book. however, the new 8th edition is not translated very well. i have an older english version (6th edition, 1968) that is translated much better. even where the content is the same between the two editions, the "updated" translation is worse that in the original version.

A Must-have Book for Fluid Mechanics Researchers!
This is the best and the most classical fluid mechanics book that i have read. Read it through carefully and you will get much from it. Reading it from time to time can give you many new knowledge every time.

The Book is OK
The Book is quite ok forintroductory courses as well as applications in Hydraulics.It is biased towards civil engineering and in my opinion is a book worthy to purchase.

I suffered this one...but...
Okay, I am an engineer who suffered this book through three- count 'em- fluid mehcanics subjects (Fluids I, II and yes, you guessed it, III! ah the pretentions of roman numerals should have warned me...alas I digress...) not that bad...
This book does seem to cover material in reasonable detail which makes for a better understanding of the basic concepts. Perhaps it could be written more lucidly but I don't think it's as bad as one star. I might change my mind after I read a few more chapters....! ... Read more

Competent as a textbook, but worthless as a handbook
I have no objections against material in the book - the author knows his stuff and it shows. A graduate student who starts at page 1 and goes from there will get a decent exposition to the theory, although somewhat outdated in focus. However, since the book contains no index, a sorryexcuse for a table of contents, and very few and poor cross-references, itis practically worthless as a handbook for those who have had someexposition to parts of the material.Read more

An old classic
Ludwig Prandtl's lectures at Gottingen form the basis for this, the basic building block of classical aerodynamics. Expect to learn about the basic assumptions inherent to the use of linear theory to aerodynamic problems.Be prepared for the use of conformal mapping and functions of complexvariables. Best read in combination with the companion volume on AppliedAero- and Hydro-mechanics.

Historical masterpiece
This book is a fluid-dynamics masterpiece. Maybe it's a little bit outdated now, but it's the book two or three generations of fuid scientists (30s-50s) used during their studies. Definitely a must-have for the serioustheoretical fluid dynamicist, not the right book if you're looking forcomputational methods.

A university-level text with little on aviation.
The title is misleading, as there is very little useful info on aeromechanics. If you are into balloons using coal gas or hydrogen, buy this book. As a university-level reference work, the section on vortices isuseful. For homebuilding aerodynamics, the book is of little use. ... Read more
