5-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Approach to a Complicated Subject
The authors have managed to take a subject that can be dry and intimidating and make it readable and enjoyable.I have been in the consulting business as a hydrogeologist for 20 years, and found that I needed to review "the basics" due to a career change to Water Resources.I found the book to be well organized, well written, and especially useful were all of the examples provided.I think it would be a very good book for students (those just starting out) and for those, like me, who need to review subjects, such as "aquifer hydraulics."And, the chapter "How to Get Along with Driller's" should be mandatory reading for all students of geology/hydrogeology/engineering.

5-0 out of 5 stars Job Well Done
This book should be required reading by every professional entering the field of hydrogeology - especially those with limited experience in groundwater science. the authors present the material in an easy to read format as though they were mentoring entry level geologists.A job well done. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Classic on fluid mechanics
This is a classic text on fluid mechanics, and an essential for any serious researcher in the field. This book starts by deriving the basic equations of fluid dynamics (a few simple equations - easy, huh?), then each subsequent chapter discusses narrower topics such as viscosity, turbulence, supersonic flow, etc.As a text for a student, this book has some serious limitations in my view.I would not recommend this book to someone approaching the material for the first time, or to teach oneself, it is really best as a research resource for a professional or graduate student. One thing that I didn't like about this book (and this is a complaint about the LL series in general) is that it is very difficult to separate which topics are general and which are very specific. The reader needs to know a bit about hydrodynamics before approaching this book in my opinion. For example, LL discuss the Rankine-Hugoniot equations for flow across a shock (a general result fundamental to hydrodynamics), then in the next section they discuss the supersonic corrugation instability, a subject that is really of interest to a small number of researchers and advanced graduate student in specific fields.Overall, not a great learning text, but an irreplacable reference on hydrodynamics. If you are looking for an introductory text, start with Batchelor.

5-0 out of 5 stars A solid text on fluid mechanics
This is an excellent fluid mechanics text.It is also my first recommendation to those who wish to study acoustics. You ought to start with the initial chapters on fluids; you'll need that material for some of what follows. The 65-page chapter on sound is simply marvellous. And then comes material on a wealth of topics, including shock waves, supersonic flow, detonation waves, relativistic fluid dynamics, and a short but valuable section on superfluid dynamics and the propagation of sound in a superfluid.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Important Book in Physics
Landau & Lifshz "Course of Theoretical Physics" is a famous and respected set of books in Physics. Unfortunately,Butterworth-Heinemann, who currently prints those books in English, printsthem with very poor quality. The books seem to be "printed" inold copy machines and the paper used is also a cheap one.In many pages,it is really hard to read the text, due to such poor printing. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Probably not the best for an Elementary Fluids course
The title of this book is misleading--there is nothing elementary in this book.Flipping through this book one will probably become intimidated by sheer volume of "difficult math". This book might be of great help in a graduate level Fluid Mechanics course, but the definitions, derivations, and concepts in general are too difficult for an undergraduate. If you have a good instructor, he or she will probably be able to simplify things for you, otherwise the book will teach you nothing. Many of the problems/examples, however, seem to be simple enough and can be solved using simple equations, so one wonders why the text goes in to so much detail using esoteric mathematics. If you are an undergraduate, and your instructor makes you buy this book, be sure to get some sort of supplementary outline book, or else you will probably be lost.

4-0 out of 5 stars generally good
this is a generally good book. of course, but as textbooks go, this is worth it. the material is as clear as can be, so that makes it a little easier to deal with an otherwise tough subject. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another classic fluid mechanics text
Milne-Thomson's text is a about 40 years more recent than Lamb's Hydrodynamics, and I think it is slightly superior (but only slightly). The notation is a little more compatible with that used in more modern texts, and the text, while still laid out in the "short article" format, flows a little better than Lamb's.
4-0 out of 5 stars Important Reference
A compilation of classic results in the field. Not the book to read for an introduction to the subject but indispensable as a reference. Better than Lamb in my opinion, but if you're going to buy one you should get the other.

3-0 out of 5 stars a very good introduction to hydrodynamics
As soon as I needed to make use of this book I found how good it was at its explanantions and even for a novice in the area it was well written and clear. Somehwat old now but nonetheless a solid introduction tohydrodynamics in the tradition of Lamb. It sits well next to that beacon offluid mechanics Batchelor. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Strange but useful
This book comprises a very thorough introduction to the Finite Element Method for diffusion-advection problems and the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The authors' style is strange and often verybizarre but the subject is presented with full details. Many different weakforms of the Navier-Stokes equations are presented and compared. From apractical point of view one will find a great deal of recipes on whatelements to use, different strategies on mesh generation, time integration, etc. One will also find a useful discussion on the advantages/disadvantagesof FEM compared to some well established finite diffrences and finitevolume methods for incompressible flows. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for any analyst
This text is a must for any working engineer or analyst who deals in steady state or unsteady state fluids flow analysis. There are many texts in the field that can be very complete yet tedious for use. The physics are presented in a straightforward manner with smooth transitions to computational methods that easily translate out of the Fortran the text uses (I convert all mine into Mathcad).Read more
