4-0 out of 5 stars Good book.
This book was the assigned reading material for my engineering technology course. Its primary purpose was to give us an `introduction' to fluid related concepts, and in that area I would say it was very successful. This books writing style is extremely easy to follow, and unlike some of my other textbooks was actually enjoyable to read. It provided step by step instructions on how to solve problems, and also offered more than enough problems for the students to solve themselves. The only issue I have with this book relates to the rather limited examples it provides. In its solutions it illustrates how to solve the simple problems, but negates to do the more complicated ones which sometimes left me clueless on how to proceed. This book is also rather expansive and does not go very deep into the subject.. If your looking for a good introduction book for your course, or some extra learning material this is a great choice. If you're a more advanced reader, I suggest you look elsewhere.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't adapt for your course
The book is very shallow and not worth considering for any engineering or any technical degree. it might be good for high school level pre-engineering classes, but difinetly not at college or university level.

This is a great text for technology based fluid mechanics. To elementary for an engineering student, but then it was meant for an engineering technology student.I find it easy to use.My students love it.Thereare few, if any, technology based fluid mechanics texts available of thiscaliber.I only wish it were less expensive. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars This book is all metric - worthless
We use english units in my state. This book is all metric. They could have at least had both metric and english in the book.I sent mine back, as it is worthless to me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Handbook of Hydraulics
This book was a classic, but why does it have to be metric?I guess converting it gave the academics something to do.Here is a news flash for the publisher: Civil Engineers praticing in the US don't use the metric system.Even our state DOT has given up on converting.I wish that the 6th edition was still available. Its just about useless now.

3-0 out of 5 stars what a good book but poor choice in typesetting
a book covering many interesting topics and i believe a student of turbulence will be very well-equiped in the basics of modern understandings of turbulence after reading this book. but what a poor page layout. the fonts are small and the book undoubtedly is bulkier because so much space is wasted on the wide margins! i think i had read somewhere that these margins would make the book a good study tools. readers can write on them. what nonsense! they could have just used a conventional layout, save plenty of pages and reading it would be better for my eyes. i can write notes and work out the equations, etc, on some notepad i have. i think it worths minusing two stars for the layout. you can say i judge this book by its font size.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for graduate students
This text is well-written and presents a lot of advanced material in relatively short order. However, the mathematics involved are quite advanced and the book is certainly intended only for people with some background in fluids - it is far from an "introductory" text!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This book is really great! The complex things in turbulence are explained in that way I've never seen it before. There are a lot of great figures that are explaining a lot of things - for example, vorticity dynamics is followed with great pictures. Main topic of this book is physical aspect of turbulence, and that's great.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Introduction to 1-D Compressible Fluid Flow
This is the second textbook by Oosthuizen that I've used and it provides a good and comprehensive introduction to 1-D compressible fluid flow. Oosthuizen develops all of the fundamental equations in a straight forward manner and there are a sufficient number of worked examples that are oriented towards applications in other fields of engineering, not just aerodynamics. Each flow regime is developed separately to facilitate the student's comprehension of the subject starting with isentropic flow, then developing normal, oblique shock theory, and expansion waves, followed by flows with: variable area, friction, and then heat addition before applying these concepts to more complex flow regimes. There is an introduction to 2-D flow, hypersonic flow, and numerical applications. Compressible flow tables for air are provided as appendices. Be careful using the software as it has been reported that there are some errors in it and some of the examples are incorrect: e.g. E 10.6 which incorrectly assumes dA is constant. This review applies to the paperback edition. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Stay away from this
I've taken a 3rd year undergraduate fluid mechanics course and we've used this as our textbook. It was a complete disaster. Let me start by saying this book pays absolutely no respect to its readers - it's filled not only with typos (and lots of them!) but also with very flimsy arguments. Now, whenever I do not understand an argument I usually think that I did not get it, or perhaps I do not understand the material enough, or that I simply have to fill in the gaps - but in this book, there are no gaps, the arguments are just lousy. Some steps even seem to be wrong, and I say that after debating them for a long while with my friends. I strongly recommend you eye this book with great suspicion.

5-0 out of 5 stars A clean and fast presenation of fluid mechanics.
An ideal book for the applied mathematician and mathematical physicist. This little text is deceptive in scope, covering the constitutive equations of motion, vorticity, and up through problems in gas dynamics. The book is also quite appropriate for self study, even more beneficial if studied in conjunction with G.K. Batchelor's classic text "An Introduction to Fluid Dynamics" for additional physical insight. Overall Marsden and Chorin have developed a classic introductory text. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Most affordable of the classics on hydrodynamic stability
This is one of the standard monographs on hydrodynamic instabilities, considered a classic. It was published by Oxford UP in 1961 and is kept in print (at a bargain price) by Dover. It is still very usable, easy toread, and an excellent introduction, although on some points it is out ofdate. For Rayleigh-Benard convection, a reader would do well to consultmore recent books like Drazin & Reid, Swinney & Gollub,Koschmieder, and Getling. However, nobody covers the linear theory betterthan Chandrasekhar.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic fluid mechanics text
As noted by other reviewers, this is a classic fluid mechanics reference text, but not suitable for detailed explanations or beginners. It also suffers from the usual fluid mechanics problem of notation, and the notation in this book is a little dated. However, once you get used to the "short article" layout (vs chapters) and the notation, you will treasure and use this book a long time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Unique Classic
This book was written in a time when ideas established by men such as Kelvin and Rayleigh were still exciting and new, and it evolved over the decades to remain a classic reference. You'll find many interesting discussions of fundamental ideas in fluid dynamics that most modern books take for granted, as well as novel approaches to some classic problems. There is more emphasis on the set of "exactly-solvable" problems than more modern books, because of the arrival of the computer and the availability of the numerical solution. Finally, this is not quite a textbook but more of a collection of articles, so much so that the earlier articles often reference later ones in the book. It's a good place to learn about aspects of fluid dynamics, but it's not an introduction. It's often not an easy read for someone stil unfamiliar with the required mathematics or dynamical principles, but you do get a unique and valuable perspective.

4-0 out of 5 stars Important reference -- can be very difficult to digest.
This is, of course, a classic text on fluid dynamics. Expect some work to get through it, though. It is very mathematical and not for the feint-hearted. ... Read more
