A comprehensive and understandable work on hydraulics...
As a lecturer and graduate student in water resource engineering, I have read numberous textbooks covering the topic of fluid mechanics.I have reviewed textbooks written by aeronautical andmechanical engineers, and find that the civil engineers, particularly Dr.'s Finnemore and Franzini, have done an exemplary job in writing a book that is clear and logical, yet spares no detail, in presenting the fundamentals of fluids to undergraduates and graduates alike.The book begins with definitions, viscocity, and hydrostatics, then moves along to open-channel hydraulics and waterhammer. There isn't a rating less than 1 star?
I cannot help but feel like I would like to toss my cookies when I recall this work. Certainly, the author made a futile attempt to provide an apelike overview of fluid mechanics, as it was at the time- but did hereally scrutinise those engineering applications? Really and truly? As areader, I must judge for myself-does this textbook actually present aserious attempt to disseminate the theories and methodologies of fluidmechanics, or is it just a convenient outlet for the author to convey tohis readers his most bizarre and disturbing fascination with pipes, heads,and viscous fluids?Personally, I wonder.... ... A good book, but not for the novice
I actually bought this book as suggested by a friend, and I found it to be interesting and well written. In my opinion, the author presents a nice overview of the aspects of turbulence theory which are closer to his ownexperience: in this sense the book is a sort of 'autobiographic picture' ofturbulence, not a textbook. However I really appreciated it, probablybecause I share many of Frisch's opinion, and was really enlightened bysome of the historical (and philosophical) considerations. Important text on turbulence
This is very good book for understanding the mathematical aspects of turbulence. The book is clearly written and is dense with information. Contents include equations of motion, random flow and its spectra, the Kolmogorov theory, equilibrium flow in spectral variables and in two space dimensions, vortex stretching, polymers, percolation, and renormalization, and vortex equilibria in three-dimensional space. ... The best textbook for understanding waterhammer
I found a xerox copy of the book when I was in a Transient Flow Course. The text is excellent for the beginners that try to understand the phenomena and the engineers involved in more advanced subjects like pumping stations matters.The author use the Bergeron Graphical Method to solve a wide variety of cases all related with the common practice of hydraulic engineers. The most amazing thing about the book is that it was done in the mid-50's and is still up-to-date, because from that time on the waterhammer analysis has evolved not so much in the prevention and estimation aspects but in the computational one. Subject that is not mentioned in this book. This is an excellent book for those project engineers that are looking forward to have an extensive comprehension of this not-so-studied part of the hydraulic engineering. ... Read more

A good reference for hydrology
The book covers comprehensive subjects on hydrology and hydraulics. It is better to use the book for a hydrology reference or text in a course. It has many practical examples for hydrologic engineering:intensity-duration-frequency curve analysis; potential evapotranspirationby Penman method; Thiessen coefficient computation by grid papers; stormsewer design with rational method, etc. Although one generally describeshydraulic subjects in separate books, it includes various hydraulicproblems.
