2-0 out of 5 stars Not a very useful book
This book tries to cover so many subjects that it covers none of them well. Most chapters are full of generalities rather than the details needed by a practicing engineer or student. The worst feature of the handbook isthe index, which contains so few entries that it is very difficult to findinformation on a topic or determine if the book even mentions it, whichoften it doesn't. Rather than buy this expensive handbook, I would suggestinvesting in standard references for the individual topics (e.g. wastewatertreatment, solids waste) in which you are interested. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars CFD Bible
I refer to this book as my CFD bible.I first used this book approximately 19 years ago as part of a two semester course in CFD.Since that time, I have refered to this book often.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book
The book is one of best books in Computational Fluid Mechanics And Heat Transfer area I have read. It not only covers basic knowledge but also talk a lot about advanced technique about CFD. It is very helpful for students just like me. After I bought this book by using a discount from coupons-center.com, I have used the book for one year. I also found CFD code is very helpful. If you are beginner to CFD coding or want to some free code as reference, this book has many good code examples. you can learn from the code examples and then can easily make your CFD code.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have
I learnt CFD on this book. Definitively I give it 5 star, unfortunately I can't give it 6. It covers all the CFD from the beginning to the advance level. You will use it as an undergraduate, graduate, PhD, post doctorate researcher. No kidding. There are some codes, the book contains all the information you need, it is easy to read, never criptic like many others. I suggest you to buy this book without any esitation if you are really wanting to learn and do CFD. There are more specific books on some arguments, say, turbulence, but none is more comprehensive and well written like this one. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written and bound
If this book is not required for your course, do not waste your money on it.Though it covers more than Goldstein, it does so quite poorly. You will learn more from two pages in Goldstein than an entire chapter in this book. The writing is unclear and the coverage of topology is so scant that its appearance is more of a hinderance to understanding than an aid.Furthermore, the book was so poorly bound that it started to fall apart one semester into the course.

1-0 out of 5 stars Extremely unclear. Also has absurdly silly errors.
First, some background: I am an advanced undergraduate student. I have taken much quantum mechanics, have a solid undergrad. classical mechanics understanding, and am a strong math student. I am very good at reading and understanding material from books (e.g. I have taught myself Rudin's Principles of Mathematical Analysis or "Baby Rudin", good book by the way). As a side note, I have good reading comprehension. 2-0 out of 5 stars Even if you like this approach, do not buy this edition
This book is, to say the least, okay.Yes, other reviewers are right when they say it's much better than Marion & Thornton. But Marion & Thornton, I think, is geared toward a less sophisticated audience, whereas this book is geared toward graduate students and beyond. It is written essentially at the level of Goldstein, but offers more insights into Topology.Goldstein hardly mentions topology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very complete introduction to tensor analysis in 3 dimensions.
This would make a good introduction to tensors for physics students (e.g. for General Relativity), though the approach is a completely classical, using index notation; you won't find anything on manifolds or differential forms here.An interesting feature is an extensive chapter on local surface theory (e.g. Gaussian curvature, but only after introducing the full Riemann tensor), which is good for building intuition about curvature in higher dimensions. While the applications are all in n <= 3 dimensions, the mathematics is done in a way that easily generalizes to higher dimensions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aris on fluid dynamics
This book is simply magnificent. ANYONE interested in fluid dynamics should own it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for the weakhearted!
This is one of those pithy classics that one needs to tread through very very carefully. The book is an uphill task, wherein rests its utility and fun. Fluid Mechanics in its simplified diluted version is served in many OTHER textbooks. This one serves it in its raw mathematical glory, and as the author says in the preface of the book, any serious engineer and fluid mechanician must realize that math must be befriended and mastered. The author makes very terse, and powerful introduction to the field. I would recommend a physicist to supplement it with a text by Faber, for Chemical Engineer to study it after the famous BSL (Transport Phenomenon), for a mathematician to pick it on any day, and for everyone in general to approach it with determination required to climb a rocky terrain. (Ah! I guess I would write an even better review if and when I finish reading it:) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Schaum's Outline of Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics (Schaum's)
It is an excellent condition and delivered on time.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good source of solved problems in fluid mechanics
I am not a mechanical engineer. Instead, I am an electrical engineer who took an undergraduate fluid mechanics class last fall to help with some graphical simulation work I was doing. However, I still had to pass the same examinations and do the same homework as the other students who did have a mechanical engineering background, and I found this outline immensely helpful. This book is an excellent source of problem-solving techniques and exercises for anyone who is taking an undergraduate course in fluid mechanics, which is the branch of science concerned with how fluids behave at rest or in motion. This outline assumes that you are already familiar with statics and with calculus, and it makes heavy use of both subjects. There is not a lot of verbal explanation in this outline. Explanation is done mainly through the introduction of some formulas, and then some completely worked out examples using those formulas. It is not at all dry in its presentation, however, and makes heavy and appropriate use of instructive figures and diagrams. Fluid mechanics is about solving problems, and the most difficult part is analyzing the system and reducing it to a series of equations. Once this has been achieved there are a number of standard methods that can be used to solve them. This book gives a good amount of practice at allowing the student to figure out how to approach larger problems in chapters 8 through 10 - "Flow in Closed Conduits", "Complex Pipeline Systems", and "Flow in Open Channels", and also in the final chapter of the outline "Fluid Machinery". This book is a great companion to Munson's "Fundamentals of Fluid Mechanics", which is the best textbook on the subject that I have encountered.

4-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for Reference/Overview
Like all of the Schaum guides for subjects in Mechanical Engineering, this outline provides a good overview of fluid mechanics, but it doesn't go into a great deal of depth. It's easy to find the equations if you want to usethe book as a reference manual or a study guide, and the problems can serveas a good supplement to an undergraduate class in Fluids. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough examples
I am a an engineering student with a gpa of 3.93 (73 hours). I have found this to be one of the least helpfull books I have ever used. The examples worked are at such a low complexity level, that they do almost no good for solving the problems at the end of the chapters. There are entire concepts that are missing explanation and you can only hope that you will have a good enough proffesor to explain during lecture. I do not have that luxury, mine will only go over the illustrated examples in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Here's hoping for a third edition of this great text!
This is the book you want if you need to solve real compressible flow problems. It covers all the basics plus there's tons of advanced materials. I especially like the fact that there are numerous detailed examples and coding templates. In addition, the book contains a very extensive reference, allowing the reader to go back to the orginal papers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Post Graduate Compressible flow
Have to agree with Mark, this book is quite superb.Professor Toro does a superb job - it took me from knowing nothing about shock capture to being able to write my own high resolution code in about six months.Coupled with the Numerica software it is an invaluable tool for learning about compressible flow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding text or reference for graduate level CFD!
By far the best computational fluid dynamics text I have come across during my thesis research! The author presents modern shock-capturing numerical methods for solving the time-dependent hyperbolic conservationlaws in multiple dimensions with exceptional clarity. Most of the textfocuses on Godunov methods and is littered with practical applications anddiscussions for those with a limited background in CFD.In addition, Toropresents a simpler interpretation of his WAF method. In terms ofreadability, I found this book to be far superior. It will undoubtedlybecome as indispensible in the CFD field as those by Fletcher, Hirsch andLeVeque! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Well explained, thorough reference
From what I've read so far (which is admittedly not much), the text makes a clear presentation of the material, both in terms of giving background on index notation, and on deriving the equations of fluid motion.
1-0 out of 5 stars Incomprehensible Flow
This book presents a horrible introduction to graduate level fluid mechanics. Some faculties like to teach from this book because of a few well-written sections near the end of an otherwise disastrous attempt on the subject.Kundu or Currie present a much more comprehensive approach to introducing the wonderful subject of fluids and the different solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations.

3-0 out of 5 stars Full of errors
The book is great, but FULL of erros. It looks like it never was corrected or edited. There are sign error on equations, missing terms is equations, bad correlation of equation numbers and so on. The overall quality of the book is excellent, but the errors kill it. Luckily the teacher of my class was the author himself so I could ask him and correct the errors as I was reading on. However, if you're buying this book and the author is not your teacher (most likely), then you'll run into some anoying troubles. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars This book is missing something
Some chapters were very useful and infomative. However I was dissapointed with most of the fluid mechanics. I would have liked more information about setting up the relevant equations. These chapters are very short and do not provide sufficient information.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT TEXT! Marciej is an idiot
I highly recommend this book to anyone new at the subject, it is really a very good text. The derivations are not confusing at all, in fact they are some of the easiest to follow. The way the book is written makes a hard subject relatively easy to understand. Converting units is one of the easiest thing in the world, and if the problems you have with this book are because of unit conversions then you shouldn't be reading a transport book. I also can't understand why someone would say that this book goes over vector calculus very poorly? It is not supposed to go over it at all!You can't expect the author to hold your hand the whole time, he needs to assume you have some knowledge before you read a book especially one on transport. Maciej should check out Harry Potter or something less involved. Another thing about Biskups review that irritates me, is how can you say you are a chemical engineer and don't know multivariable calculus? This kid is so dumb.I am chemical engineer too, and I love all calculus even easier forms like multivariable which you are required to know. How else can you get through thermodynamics genius?

1-0 out of 5 stars Under written
I believe this college level fluids textbooks is severely underwritten. The authors assume too much about your knowledge in the field of fluids. The derivations are short and confusing. There are hardly any examples that you can fall back on if you get confused when you try to workout a problem. The chapters are really short. Plus, there isn't an appendix for unit conversions but they use multiple kinds of english and SI units throughout the "examples" and end of chapter problems. As a chemical engineering student, this book is one of if not the worst textbooks I have ever used and sadly owned. I suggest you go to class and pay close attention to your notes because you will only use this book to look up the problems you get assigned. Also, this book assumes that you know multivariable calculus like you're a math major. Goes through vector calculus very poorly and does not show how to work out the problems, but rather skips important parts about it. Hope you kept your calculus book and notes from your previous semester! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 3D-Groundwater Modeling with PMWIN
PMWIN is a robust simulation system capable of modeling groundwater flow and solute transport. It is easy to use and import figures of differing formats. The GUI (graphical user interface) is user friendly. The text presents all the information, graphics and illustrations of the GUI making it easy to understand and use.I highly recommend this program.

5-0 out of 5 stars 3D-Groundwater Modeling with PMWIN
I was using earlier version of pmwin and 3-d visualisation was missing. Therefore I always in preferred to work with Visual Modflow with 3-D explorer and GMS. Now using version 5 of PMWIN with 3-D explorer, I was thrilled. Really it is wounderful and quite simple. I do not find it is less than other counter part Commercial Software. Its 3-D explorer is better than Visual Modflow 3-d explorer.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent primary text with latest software from start 2 end
To learn the groundwater modeling techniques, the students or the professionals needthe suitable software and the textbook which explaines clearly the theory and the used software. The book must explaine the procedures step by step and from start to to the end.But nowadays, if you have not enough money to purchase the commercial modflow based software, it is a pity that you have to learn MODFLOW codes. It was the undesriable things.Hydrogeological modeling means interpretation. But there is no possibility to see visual something among the codes.I created the input and as a result output errors during the simulations with codes at the beginning. There is a good words in computer technology; Gap In Gap Out.It summurizes the best what i meant.Definitely all hydrogeologists have to know all background informations on groundwater modeling techniques and the structure of used softwares. But i think, groundwater modeling is more than a science, it is a art which must have a visual effect. So that I have looked for the best groundwater modeling book and the software since 1991.At the end, i have found, what i have ever looked for. This is this book which combines the latest modeling techniques and the latest modeling software. You can learn the latest modeling techniques written by the leading teaching experts and creators of PMWIN.This 344 pages textbook walks the practising engineers or students through the modeling process from start to finish. You don't need any other additional tool. This book has also the best groundwater modeling and contaminant transport modeling software. Especially it is the best learning asistance with example problems for the students and practising professionals. Read more
