Great for thinking out of the square
I'm a consulting R&D engineer and this book is virtually never on the shelf. Someone always has it on their desk, browsing through it, just soaking up ideas.
Sclater's v. Parmley's books
I bought the largely similar books on mechanical components by Sclater and Parmley. Both have drawings of similar quality, to the point of having identical drawings in a number of cases (presumably because both authors used the same third-party source for the particular topic). A very few drawings were disappointing, but most were very good indeed -- and even the disappointing drawings probably would be fine for most engineers (I am not one).
Mechanisms for visual learners
Because I am one of those 'visual learners', this book is ideal for me. The concise text in this book accompanies a very nice graphic or two -- both greyscale and line art.

Makes you remember why you became an engineer in the first place
This is a textbook for mechanical engineering design and also a reference book for practicing mechanical engineers. It is assumed that the reader has had courses in statics, dynamics, strength of materials, and material science. In other words, it is assumed you are the equivalent of at least a junior undergraduate in mechanical engineering.
A broad book, but lacking in details
The book covers a broad range of problems in machine design but lacks clear explanations and citations.Often times in sample problems the author's solution skips crucial steps or fails to cite information.The section on fasteners is lacking as well.It neglects to mention counterfeit fasteners and their implications in recent years.It also does not mention AN or NAS fasteners.Too many coeficients are taken blindy from charts which are not cited.This makes the problems in the book little more than blind "plug & chug" type problems.One might expect this from a first or second edition high school book, but not a fourth edition college text.

Power Plant Engineering
This book presents the latest data on power plants and provides much needed formulas and rules of thumb for sizing equipment based on plant size and arrangement. The book has many examples of equipment and has a good section although somewhat out of date on permitting of power plants. I would recommend it for any power plant engineer especially those just entering the power generation industry.

Very good book.
I like this book a lot.Good information.One sentence annoys me though.On page 7 the author states, "Pure oxygen is flammable."This is a false statement.It made me wonder if he ever used an oxyacetylene outfit when I first read it.Who hasn't accidentally tried to light the oxygen first instead of the acetylene and found that nothing happens?Higher concentrations of oxygen increase the rate of oxidation/combustion but oxygen isn't a fuel, i.e., it isn't flammable.But pure oxygen makes things that are flammable more dangerous.
Super!Carry it in your toolbox for Oxy Welding
If you can afford only one book on Oxy Welding get this one, no make that two so you can have one in you toolbox and one to replace it when the one in your toolbox "grows legs" and walks off.This is "thee" book for the practical weldor and fits nicely into your toolbox.Read it, use it, take it with you where ever you go to work. The author is writing to you as your coworker not as an instructor or engineer though he is still showing you how to do it correctly and SAFELY.

MEEB Bow Down
If you want to know more than most Architects and Engineers about how to design the guts of buildings this is the book to use. It's a fat guy though! Sometimes the text seems to weigh you down. Most architectural students consider it a sloug! But, once they graduate, they use it throughout their careers as design professionals. If you want to know how to develop a regional climatic response strategy for your building or development, calculate passive ventillation rates or heat gains and losses on unique configurations of wood, siding and insulation; size gutters or a rain water catchment system or plan for an elevator, this is the book for you.

Pros and Cons...
This book has its ups and downs, as you might expect from a first edition.Since most people probably won't read this entire review, I'll state the Cons first because they are the least obvious.This book has a lot of mistakes.Not just in grammar, but in its example problems as well.I think it's great when I can open a text book and learn the material from the example problems.However, when the solutions to these problems are incorrect, they are not helpful at all. I found this very frustrating (along with the rest of my class), but luckily my professor cleared up most of the confusion.They also do not use units, so it can be confusing trying to follow the example.

A Must Read!
People who criticize this book are people that have not yet learned dynamics. Though this book is not easy, neither is the subject matter. This book gives it straight. It covers certain subjects rarely found in other intermediate textbooks, such as the correct analysis of nonrelativistic systems with variable mass, and nonholonomic systems. The homework problems are perhaps the best intermediate-level collection ever assembled.

Not for the faint at heart
Don Greenwood's "Principles of Dynamics" is definitelyNOTone for the faint at heart. Reason why many frustrated readers/students balk so much at it, bash it so furiously. you need to know the advanced..before reading principles....
This is not the book that you search for if this is your first course in dynamics or even your first graduate course! . It was my text book in a dynamics grauate course, and I really found a hard time understanding thetopics. I used to read other books searching for the idea of the topic andI really found it easier in other books.In my opinion,the only advantage ofthis book that it has wide range of problems (actually..most of them arevery tough)which is suitable to study for a Ph.D exam!. HERE IS MYRECOMMENDATION....There is a new graduate level book called ANALYTICALDYNAMICS by H. Baruh. I found Baruh's book the best and the most amazingbook ever been & will be, in the history of dynamics!every singletopic related to the world of dynamics has been introduced easily with veryuseful example(s). it also includes detailed advanced subjects with niceillustrations and examples...Do yourself a favor and go to Baruh'sbook..you will never forget my advice. ... Outstanding
With no doubt this is the best Aerodynamics book for college students ever written...ever!Very clear explanations,full of examples and a good set of exercises to challenge your understanding of the subject. The only negative point is that there no answers to the problems.

Decent textbook
This book needs a good professor to go along with it. The examples have little to do with many things in the text and the book fails to emphasize which concepts are the most important.

the best.
i have most of the books on rocket engines that are sold today.
OK as far as it goes, but my goodness...
I got this for one of my kids, who was young, and wanted to know why it was difficult to make rockets. GO GET IT!
As already mentioned above....do not question the price! It is really worth every single cent! I am not a LRE-designer nor do I work in any similar branche...you'll need to work yourself through the subject and especially through the mathematics, but you will be able to design your own rocket motor. A must have for all rotorcraft engineers
As an aerospace engineer I have read many books on rotorcraft and I mustadmit that this is the most up to date and useful text on rotorcraft that Ihave had the pleasure to read. There are many aspects of the text thatstand out, however the one I found most useful, especially as a graduatestudent, was that the equations are derived from engineering basics and areaccompanied by clear explanations of the principles involved. The text andequations are also supplimented by clear diagrams that serve to enhanceunderstanding of the more complex topics covered. Good Fundamentals Book by a Talented Writer
This is an excellent book for the modern fundamentals of aircraft control design. Most subjects are clearly treated with just the right amount of illustrations and examples. The author makes good effort of explaining procedures without resorting to function calls from some software package. The last of the book devotes relatively little space to modern control theory. I would hope this talented writer would create something more advanced in the future that would expand on his treatment of the state observer and the use of the cost function.

An excellent introductory book. Highly readable.
The best aspect of this book is the simplicity in the exposition of ideasand concepts while giving more than enough information for an introductorybook. Fully worked out examples are frequent throughout the chapters andhelps even further in getting good grasp of new materials. If the readerhas taken introductory courses in Vibration and/or Feedback Control, thebook should be an easy read.The book is roughly divided into two parts:The flight dynamics part and control part.In the flight dynamics part,the explanation smoothly leads the reader from equation of motion to theconcept of stability derivatives and how they relate to dynamic stability.The derivatives are very well explained and then summarized in tables for aquick reference.In the control part, the author starts from the classiclinear feed back control and proceeds to the modern state space method andintroduces optimal control design using linear quadratic regulator.Thecontrol part is an amazing time saver. I have never seen a more efficientintroduction to optimal control as applied to aircraft dynamics. If thereader wants a full fledged treatment of optimal control of aircraft, thematerials presented here are far from enough, but as an introductory book,this is an excellent exposition that lets the reader get to pace quicklyand have straight forward perspective on the subject. Although there weresome blatant typos, it is an excellent work and I highly recommend thebook.

A lot of info on aircraft control in a small textbook.
I found this textbook to include a large amount of concisely presented material on all aspects of aircraft stability and control and feedback control system design. It covers everything from the atmosphere, to development of forces and moments and equations of motion, to estimation ofstability derivatives, analysis of dynamics and modes of motion, and handyreduced degrees of freedom. It also includes many examples of designingautopilots and stability augmentation systems. I really liked the exampleswhich included both classical and state variable methods. Each chapter alsohas several interesting example problems. I would recommend this text foranyone in the field of aircraft or missile flight controls. The onlydissappointing aspect of the text is what I consider an excessive number oftypographical errors. I would caution anyone not to use the equations orformulas without first checking the derivation. The derivations are clearand concise enough that the reader should be able to find these errors. ... Does not explain well
Overall this book is not horrible, but it's not great by any stretch of imagination.Some of the chapters are well explained, but there are also a couple of chapters, such as chapter 18, that are very unclear.There are too few examples in each chapter, and they usually fail to underscore most of the theory stated earlier, some even skip the steps that are being taught in the same chapter!Needless to say, this makes understanding the material frustrating at times.There are probably much better dynamics textbooks around.

A must for anyone interested in panel methods
Comprehensive in both theoretical and numerical presentation. The authors show how to model invicid, incompressible aerodynamics using pnael methods which are based on potential theory. They also show how to incorporate viscosity inside the boundary layer. I found the book's detailed treatment of panel methods for unsteady aerodynamics particularly useful.Most textbooks only show the steady state case. The book is very practical with very good description of algorithms. At the end of the book, you can also find sample programs developed by authors' students. ... Read more

Reference Resource
Comprehensive in-depth reference tool - this is how the book has been characterized by a university professor using it for his course instruction. I concur. Amazing amount of practical detail in one refernce. Dimensionally a bit large and gangly but likely would require mulitple volumes if in standard book size. The web page link is a nice feature given the fast moving topic. Cleanroom reference is out of date and could be updated given the reference focus. Text discusssions well written and unusually pleasant to read.
