2-0 out of 5 stars Needs Improving
I used this text in an elective on electrical machines and found the book very difficult to learn from.Readability is not bad.The writing is fine and easy enough to follow but the equations in the text were frequently the wrong equation for the topic.Several tables had eroneous information. While most text books contain some errata, this book contained more than any of the dozens of engineering books in my personal library.None of the end of chapter problems had any answers in order to check work. While only a nuisance, example problems in the text would reference a machine from several chapters back, requiring the reader to flip back and forth to understand the situation of the current example.I did appreciate the fact that the book includes matlab examples and exercises as to aid understanding with simulations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete without being difficult
This book may be considered a reference in the study of electric machines, because it brings the main aspects of electromechanical energy conversion devices without being difficult to understand. Its way for explaining therelations of power/current/torque in induction machines is the best oneI've seen in any book.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book !!
This is by far my favorite book on conduction.Very clear exposition on all topics raging from the classic method of separation of variables to integral transform. However i must warn that this is a book of how to solve partial differential equation of heat conduction. The reader looking for physics explanation should buy the excellent book from arpaci.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compressor Performance Monitoring Simplified
As the Lead Process Reliability Engineer in a 280MBPD refinery I am expected to train our engineering staff on monitoring strategies that will drive down our unplanned event and equipment maintenance costs.Recently I was assigned the responsibility to develop an effective compressor monitoring program to take advantage of turnaround planning and PPM opportunities within the refinery.Since my background is primarily in chemical and utilities operations, I felt that this book could assist me in meeting expectations.5-0 out of 5 stars A Modern, Comprehensive, Applications-Oriented Text
The author compiled this 550-page book because there is a real need forusers to have a single-source text that clearly illustrates, in hundreds ofrecent photographs, machines ranging from slow-speed reciprocating tosingle-shaft, cost-effective, reliable, magnetic bearing-equippedintegral-motor centrifugals. It correctly perceives the need to acquaintthe modern reliability professional with highly successful 7000 HPmulti-stage helical screw machines in dirty gas service and sees fit tohighlight such items as leading-edge flexing pivot bearings, dry gas seals, swirl brakes, sophisticated surge avoidance systems, etc. Also included inthe text are clear, easy-to-follow examples of performance calculations andgraphic shortcut methods for determining upgrade potential and the effectsof operating compressors under conditions that deviate from thoseoriginally specified. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book on design & analysis for the engineer
Mechatronics represents a process that blends mechanics and electronics with use of precision engineering, computer science, information technology, control system theory, and sensor and actuator technology to design improved products and processes. This book, unlike many in the field, is aimed at upper level undergraduate engineers, not hobbyists or technicians. Therefore a certain amount of mathematical maturity is required. The objectives of this book are:

2-0 out of 5 stars Skimming the Surface
This book is a very general view from a very British perspective.I don't think it belongs in Embry-Riddle's graduate programs because it does not meet the needs of experienced professionals. As an undergraduate overview of the systems design process, it is good. However, the author does not even touch helicopters, seaplanes, or lighter-than-air-technology.So, the book would be more aptly named "Introduction to Airplane Design."
2-0 out of 5 stars No substance
I consider this book to be a rough draft for a much larger book to come (I hope). The author just skims lightly through vast numbers of subjects, so that anyone who knows anything about airplanes will learn nothing new.Yet it isn't written on a basic enough level to have much to offer someone who knows nothing.4-0 out of 5 stars Practical guide to aircraft design
Many aircraft design books detail the 'how' of aircraft design. For example, determining the stall characteristics of a conceptual aircraft design. John Flemings' book introduces the 'why' of the aircraft designprocess. This book is a perfect companion to other aircraft design texts, like 'Aircraft Design-a conceptual approach' by Daniel Raymer ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Descriptive Non-mathematical Approach
Intended for use in an electronics based industrial/manufacturing course, this is an introductory text on process control. It stresses a hands-on operational approach rather than concentrating on mathematical design. The 24 chapters (including one chapter on the CD) can be conbined in various ways to teach courses in several areas including: electrical motors, solid-state variable-speed drives, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), servomechanisms, sensors, and various specialty areas such as instrumentation or process control.

4-0 out of 5 stars pity it's not metric

4-0 out of 5 stars A Classic in Gas Turbine Courses
This is a great book for students who face by first time a gas turbine course. The only disadvantage is the lack of explicit information about turboprop, turboshaft, ramjet and scranjet. But, overall is a good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most outstanding book on Gas Turbine Theory & Design
I have acquired the fifth edition of Gas Turbine Theory by Professor Saravanamuttoo to add to the previous four editions in my library. 4-0 out of 5 stars Fit For Purpose
This is what the title says - for engineering students. It is not really useful for the practicing aircraft structural analyst. The mathematics presented is considerably more involved than is presented in most other airframe analysis texts, with empahsis on how stress formulae are derived.A bit over the top if all you want is to know how to analyse a practical problem, but ideal for the student who needs to know the foundations of analysis.A little bit annoying how equations are quoted by number, forcing the reader to continuously return to previous chapters.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad examples, NOT clear
The examples are not clear. They only show numbers with no units and do not even explain where the numbers came from.I am a student so I had to buy this book.I would not recomend buying this book unless you absolutly have to. I have seen alot of engineering books and this one is truely one of the worst.

4-0 out of 5 stars effective
This useful book gives a strong theoretical basis on structural analysis. In fact the maths involved is advanced but clearly explained, so that it is quite easy to follow the theory presentation. Worked examples,as well as line illustrations, are very helpful, efficaciuosly completingthe expositions. In the end ,a quite comprehensive textbook. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Generally Good Information
As an owner of the second and third editions, I found the second edition's physical qualities (paper, printing quality, etc.) to be better than the third edition's. Mr. Messina is mistaken when he indicates that my previous review was based on the second edition. I had ordered (through Amazon) the book on a waiting list and got it shortly after it was published. It is sitting next to me as I type. The second edition is in my office.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pump Handbook, 3rd Edition review
I can't confess as having read the whole book as it is very extensive, but from what I've read so far I can provide the following review. 5-0 out of 5 stars Pump Handbook
Handbook is a term which implies comprehensive coverage of a given subject, so often a term which is misapplied. Not so in this case however, this book is without a doubt one of the best sources of information on pumps and related system components currently in print. For anyone requiring a comprehensive pump resource, this is it. I would definitely recommend this one for the engineering library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great SPC book
Used this book in a graduate level course on SPC.The book and the excercises were interesting and highly informative, as are all of Dr. Montgomery's numerous texts. Most concepts are backed up with liberal examples to help understand the theory and cement the concept and their practical applications, and run the whole gamut from management to electrical engineering problems. Many of the tables in the back of the book, such as the random number table, are outdated due to computers, however these may have been dropped in the new version of the text.

4-0 out of 5 stars The science of mundane
This is a very good book to have for an engineer who deal with two-phaseflows and heat transfer, for those who design and operate nuclear reactors, thermal power plants and other thermal management systems. It provides afoundation, with an extensive collection of empirical formulae which couldbe useful if properly applied. What feels missing in this book, - and isgeneral feature of BOOKS on two-phase flows and boiling - is the heavyempiricism, the lack of a scientific concept, the absence of robusttheoretical treatment that one should possess after reading such acomprehensive compilation. That is to say, it is good for some one whoknows the subject/field, not for teaching someone about boiling heattransfer and two-phase flows.

4-0 out of 5 stars Flashing Phenomena
I think for better understanding to learn about Nuclear Power Plant System (NPPS), we must learn first about Boiling and Two-phase flow as an important part of thermohydraulicssystem in NPPS

This was a good book but out of date on many topics. It is a great all around reference or start-up and go book. I decided I wanted to learn about cars so I found this book at a tag sale and now I know the basics. I wouldsuggest this book for its no-nonsense and in-depth approach.

I'm an automotive engineering student and I use this book as a reference. It provides information on virtually everything on or related to a car, tools, brakes, suspensions, fuel systems, just to name a few. Besides that,it also provides service and diagnosis information on every system of thecar it covers. The language used is simple to understand, and yet blendswell with layman's terms.
