A "practicing engineer's" Fracture Mechanics!
This is an excellent book for the practicing engineer who wants to use fracture mechanics to solve fracture and fatigue problems used in industry today.The author explains fracture mechanics and fatigue in terms the practicing engineer uses on a daily basis.For example, different material properties used in fracture mechanics are compared to Hook's Law, yield strength, and tensile strength, material properites common to structural engineers. Principles of Fracture Mechanics
"Principles of Fracture Mechanics" is the most concise yet complete survey on the equations and history of fracture mechanics I have found.Professor Sanford does an excellent job explaining how complex analysis is used to derive many of the equations governing the fracture of metals, without bogging the reader down in the mathematical details.I found the book to be enlightening.After reading it, I also found myself wishing I could have taken a course in fracture mechanics from Professor Sanford when I was in college.

An Excellent Teacher
Alright, I've haven't read the final book. I do have an unfinished version that Professor Sanford distributed when I took this class from him at the U of Maryland. The initial version was excellent. I had tried to slog through other presentations on fracture mechanics and had gotten lost in the details. Read more

Good textbook for students and junior engineers
This book is a great reading for students or junior engineers who are just starting to work in Mechanical Engineering. However, a Senior Engineer and any experienced practician will look for something more deep.

Use a different book
I had to use this book in my structures class.I had no prior experience with structures before, and this book was unable to fill the gap.As a result, I've got a D in a class, and I will have to re-take it.If you have to use the Sun's book, supplement it with "Aircraft structures for engineering students" 3rd ed by T.H.G. Megson ISBN 0-340-70588-4.It follows the same notation as Sun (even some drawings are identical), and it's much, much, much more thorough.The Sun's book by itself can be useful only to people with prior experience with structures who just have to use this particular book.

The Good and the Bad, mostly the Bad.
I was required to purchase this book for my Junior level A&AE Structural Analysis Course. Chock full of theory and derivations, it doesn't set forth a clear path for learning, but rather a thicket in which problems sets are solved by wildly searching backward in the book for equations and examples in order to help make some sense of the problem at hand. While the book is full of good problems, the concepts tested in the problems are not always clearly explained (What the heck is shear flow anyway?).
Good Book For Graduate Students
This book treats all kinds of problems in the aircraft structure. The contents are consice and require background knowledge in structure and PDE. I think it is good book for senior and graduate students of Aerospace department. I also used this as the textbook in the senior class. A decent book, but not my first pick
This book has a lot of information, no doubt about it.And you may findsome things in it that you'll be hard-pressed to find elsewhere (such asnon-linear damage theories, fretting, shock and impact, etc).However, thebook is quite theoretical, and information is scattered over variouschapters, sometimes making it difficult to find what you're looking for. And when you do find it, the information is often not presented in aprecise and detailed manner, which is important whenever you attempt toextend theory to real-life problems.I found this to be the case with thestrain-based fatigue discussion, and especially the fracture mechanicscoverage, which is cursory at best.I recommend that you first check outDowling's book ("Mechanical Behavior of Materials").I havefound it to be much more useful. ... Heavily into the Theoretical
Even though this book is primarily intended for researchers and grad students, it leaves very little of the topic of fracture mechanics untouched. All the way from calculating relatively simple K factors to the intricate J- and P- Integrals, the book provides the equations that are needed for almost any research project, especially in the Elastic-Plastic region.Read more
