5-0 out of 5 stars What engineering is really all about
This book is what engineering is really all about- actually designing machinery and mechanical components to fill a need. I know that is why I got into the game several decades ago. Yet with all the management, scheduling, quoting, and clerical chores that are piled on engineers and engineering departments these days, it is easy to lose sight of why you chose this career in the first place. In fact, that's the only thanks you ever get in a largely thankless profession- the joy of occationally getting to design something that works.
5-0 out of 5 stars This Should Be the First Book in Your Engineering Library
Having started in engineering as a draftsman more than 40 years ago, Ihave seen them all ... and in my humble opinion this is the best book ofits kind ever written. The authors, Jensen and Helsel, have bypassed mostof the fluff, like how to sharpen your pencil, and go directly to the heartof the matter. They have packed more pertinent, practical how-toinformation and technical reference data in this book than you will find inany other five books of its size. The book is easy to read, and to findspecifically what you need.Proper and in-depth coverage is given to thevery latest in drafting standards in both metric and inch systems;including limits and fits, geometric tolerancing, shop practices, and alsostandard parts.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An education in perspective
This is one of the best and most informative books on the subject of perspective I've read or studied. Thank you very much for making this book available.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clear guide to basic perspective
For some reason, perspective is the boogey-man of many people learning to draw. It doesn't have to be that way. This book will help you put that sense of solidity and reality into a drawing.4-0 out of 5 stars Not just for engineers and architects.
I got this book because I had a floor plan that I wanted to make into a 3D or at least 2D home elevation.I've never taken a drawing course and before this, everything I drew was rubbery or floating. :-)Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the greatest book for me
I guess I don't understand construction details, but I didn't understand a single problem in this book.I had to refer to my Construction: Materials, Methods, and Techniques by William Spence in order to answer the review questions. The problems were writtin in short hand with abbreviations I didn't know.I think this book might be a little intimidating to someone who is not familiar with construction or detailing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Desktop Reference
I looked long and hard for a book this thorough.A buddy of mine had Crevelings tolerancing book and I thought that was excellent. As I finished my masters degree, I needed a thorough desktop reference that I thought represented best in class. That's exactly what this book is.Since each chapter is written by the major players in these areas, this book is much more than one authors views on the topics.Rather, it is a best in class compilation from some of the sharper folks here in the US doing dimensioning and tolerancing.Paul's chapters themselves are excellent and very thorough. His discussion on how to incorporate the geometric controls into stackup analyses is excellent.Overall, this book should be on every mechanical engineers desktop along with the ASME GD&T standard and Montgomery's books on Quality Control and Design of Experiments.Hats off to Paul and all the other authors for their excellent work!

5-0 out of 5 stars bought used, great value
I would say the first 1/2 is GD&T. The 2nd 1/2 covers tolerancing methods. I have learned a lot from the 2nd half. It covered a lot of new information, in clear terms. I have been through six sigma certification. This is a valuable book in my toolbox.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dimensioning and Tolerancing Handbook
This book includes an extraordinary consolidation of cutting edge information and innovative authors that are truly on the "bleeding edge of technology"!Each chapter covers different topic areas by individuals practicing these design techniques and tools in the real world today. The chapters cover everything from an overview of the various quality thursts, to tolerance allocation techniques, to maximizing GD&T, to Statistical tolerancing, to developing process capability models for DFSS (Designing for Six Sigma), and much more. This text is surely one of the best ever compiled as a consolidation of the contained related subject matter. This is a priceless body of knowledge in a single book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a bargain!
About a month ago, I bought the One Step at a Time series (3 books with the workbook) for AutoCAD 2007 in ebook format. The whole series cost me 30.24 - and I didn't have to wait (or pay) for shipping. Then I printed them all (in color) at work so I could reference them anytime I needed to.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good book/series at a good price!
I bought the AutoCAD 2007: One Step at a Time series (including 3D and Workbook) and am very please with the product.I only had about a week to get up to speed with AutoCAD (I studied it in the mid-90s but haven't seen it since), and these books were very easy to follow and left me with a better-than-functional understanding of the software.I amazed myself with my final 3d drawing!
5-0 out of 5 stars Five Stars for the Series and the Support
I've now been through both the beginning and 3D books of this series and am very happy with both. The approach is straightforward and easy to follow.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very questionable science, and many errors in text
I bought this book for a readings class this semester.I don't have a suitable vocabulary to describe how poor it is.The text is inconsistent and full of errors. The author blathers on without concluding much.He references his previous work and that of PhD theses (which I can only assume are his own students).I question the underlying assumptions of his theory but it is never fleshed out in sufficient detail to be understood and examined.
4-0 out of 5 stars What is important here?
One of great emerging ideas in the past 20 years is that there are tools to help in the design of robust products and systems. There are other approaches: TRIZ, QFD and other heuristic-based methods. There are also references to Dr. Taguchi's robust design methods (DFSS). The point is that the author here has made his point - DFSS as applied to multi-requirement products and systems... and that includes just about every product/system we use and need... has an overlooked flaw.Read this book to understand what that flaw is and how to address it.2-0 out of 5 stars A False Science

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference book for any engineer
I bought this book because I am nuts about cars, but in addition to that, I am also a professional in a technical field. I used this book as a reference during the writing of my doctoral thesis. I found that the Bosch Automotive Handbook had a very comprehensive section on hardness testing, which I used extensively in my research at that time.I am also using this book in calculating the suspension geometry for a car project at home - I use it at work so much that I'm considering the purchase of a second copy for home use.
4-0 out of 5 stars Automotive Engineer's Book
If you are an automotive engineer then you know this book and probably have an edition. As to the idea that it is "Theoretical", nothing could be further from the truth, it contains a number of relevant charts and descriptions, for instance and handy guide to the properties of liquid fuels which contains ignition temperatures, stoichometry, ignition limits and the like.Of course, if you are not an engineer, than it is pretty well not applicable. It is NOT a guide to repair of vehicles. It is NOT detailed. It is NOT intended for an audience outside engineer/technicians and automotive managers. It does contain rather a lot of basic information, for instance, descriptions of how a catalytic converter works, or how an O2 sensor works.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Automotive Mechanical Engineering Reference
This book is not for someone looking to learn about automotive mechanics or how to fix and repair cars. This book contains a fair amount of formulas and tables that are useful to those who work in the area of automotive design. It does describe briefly all aspects of the automoble such has how an ignition, starter, steering, fuel management, braking system, etc. work but not to the point that it would be useful for someone trying to troubleshoot automotive problems. If you're looking for your first automotive textbook to learn about the systems on your car then this book is not it.If you're looking for an indepth HANDBOOK for a quick reference for any automotive aspect (that you once knew but now forgotten) then it's worth every penny. The book fits in the palm of your hand and is 1-inch thick.Like a bible in many respects. ...
