5-0 out of 5 stars great product

1-0 out of 5 stars try another supplier
I purchased this book for classes at the community college in Arizona. Upon receiving the book, Amazon did not attach the CD-ROM that was suppose to go with it. Amazon still could not correct the order after the second try by sending me the CD-ROM that is stated in the editorial reviews. I had to return both books at there cost. Two weeks later, I am now looking for the book from another supplier. Amazon just couldn't fill the order correctly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for a newcomer to the architectural world
I bought it used (1996 edition)at a bargain rate, in top condition. I'm changing from mechanical to architectural design and the book is priceless for me. It has all the basics, and lots of details. The book is a textbook with assignments and tests. Saves going to class. The focus is on design rather than CAD. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Text book study
This book is laid out like a text book course of study, which I like, however one important thing to note is that there is no answer key for the tests. The answer key is a seperate book and I have been unable to locate it.Fortunately I work for a General Contractor and have been able to have my co-workers check my answers for accuracy. But as far as being a good source for systematic learning, this book definitely is. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Never out in print fast enough
Paul Aubin has done it again.Like my title says, Paul Aubin's books never come out fast enough for me.This book is a great resource for ADT users. There have been a lot of changes since ADT first came out.The major changes started in ADT 2004 and continue on thru ADT 2007.The changes from ADT 2006 to ADT 2007 are covered very well in this book.He takes you step by step thru a residential project & a commercial project. As you go thru the book he not only shows you how you command(s) work, but also why.He also gets into the subtle changes that have come about, e.g. Visual Styles. The books is arranged in such a way that you can be productive in ADT 2007 as you go along in the book. You don't have to wait until you are completed with the book to be productive. You can also move around in the book to go over a certain part of ADT without having to work your way up to it.For example, if you are just getting thru adding windows & doors & your work project needs to add a roof, you can go to the section of the book that covers roofs & you will be able to understand how to work roofs from reading the section withour having to do the sections before. But, if you can, go thru the book in the order that it's written to get the best grasp of ADT that you can.You can truly expect your skills to rise at least one level from going thru the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for learning GD&T
This book is an excellent substitute or supplement to a course in geometric dimensioning & tolerancing.GD&T was not taught at the college I attended and this book helped me quickly get up to speed.Within days of using this I was creating proper drawings that accuratly communicated my company's requirements for cast parts. However, the book is probably better suited as a learning tool than it is a reference as it often took some time to look up and find the answer for specific questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for understanding Geometrical Tolerances

It helps you to understand the difference between GeometricalDimensioning vs Coordinate Dimensioning. A must for Engineering DrawingStandards. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars From both the office and academia...
I'm very surprised at the two star review below. This book is one of the most comprehensive and updated books on the topic of architectural working drawings to date. Each chapter is a literal list of things to do and strategies for preparing a full set of construction documents. There is even a CAD chapter and nearly 500 new CAD illustrations. Also, an appendix is available on the publishers website that has a comprehensive amount of CAD information. If you want more CAD information, google search "National CAD Standard". You're money is well spent on this book; look at the number of people who purchase it above 50%+ of the people who looked at this book and all others on the topic. Don't hesitate to buy it now :)
2-0 out of 5 stars very outdated book
This guide is based on a few specific projects which have little relevance to today's market. No outlines, guidelines, or checklists were available to help with the process of putting together a complete set of working drawings. If you are already in the field of architecture, this book is too basic and not applicable to more modern projects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource, even for CAD drafters
I bought this book when my younger brother started taking CAD classes to come work with me.I have found it to be an excellent resource, for the beginning draftsman, for putting together a set of plans. For the intermediate and advanced draftsman it is a valuable "checklist" book. The book only has one small section on CAD, but that is not the idea of the book.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book
I have many years of architectural drafting experience. Although this book says "Basic Skills" on the cover, it is much more than basic. It's an excellent reference book, covering everything that is needed for interior design drafting: from line weights to scale, dimensioning, plans, elevations, sections, checklists, furniture and finish schedules, contract documents, and the list goes on. I highly recommend this book for students of interior design and practising designers alike. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Engineering and Design for today's ANSI/ASME/ISO standards
This book describes it all, gives the rules of the road for the changes that have occured in the last number of years in ANSI callouts, Geometric Tolerancing, ASME, and ISO practices.I've been in this business since '76 on the drafting board, and since '86 with CADD (Computer Aided Drafting & Design) and have watched the skills of knowing how to draft (a distinct language of its own) and the elements of design and engineering fall by the wayside in general as the focus now by our educators and companies is more about learning to and running a CADD program, making a picture than following the skills and practices of drafting, design, and engineering.Students today need to get back to "walking" (learning drafting) before they "run" with a CADD program. This book addresses what is necessary to create drawings and design the parts as they should be.I highly recommend it to anyone conscientiously wanting to really learn to do the job right and/or to hone their skills.

3-0 out of 5 stars Exhaustive theory, but inaccurate exercises
As an all-inclusive reference on Drafting theory and practice, this is as good a book as any. However: Having used it as a teaching text, I found an inexcusable number of mistakes in the end-of-chapter exercises. The dimensions simply don't stack up! My advice: Go over them yourself first, time permitting, before assigning them to your classes. Perhaps (hopefully) this has been/will be corrected in later editions. Also: Board drafting is a dying art. Thus, while opening chapters on theory and sketching methods should be retained, more emphasis must now be placed on CAD (not "CADD"); specifically, 3D CAD and downstream processes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The true value of this book . . .
I can only speculate that this book is, as was one of the previous editions I've read, used and loved, is bound to provide an exceptional foundational education in the skill of technical (engineering design) drawing/drafting for those with the natural aptitude for freehand drawing. Readers will indeed learn about and develop precision drawing skills--whether drawing with instruments or computer.
1-0 out of 5 stars Profoundly Frustrating
As a freshman engineering major, I have been compelled to use Technical Drawing for a graphics course. This has been a profoundly frustrating experience. It seems that the authors, in their zeal to attain unto the dry, lifeless style characteristic of most professional engineering publications, also unintentionally created a text which is superlatively unclear.

5-0 out of 5 stars makes autocad easy to learn
what i like about this book, over the books that come from autodesk, the makers of autocad, is that it's trimmed down. it isn't filled with lots of extra stuff you will never use. this book is simple and straight forward, which is what you need when you're using a monster of a program like autocad. the reason for the monster, is so anyone, with varied applications, can use this program. ideally, the program be would customized per use; eg there could be autocad for drawing small mechanical parts, one for designing hvac systems, one for architecture (this finally exists in the form of autocad architectual desktop), one for circuit design, etc. with specialized versions of autocad, a manual could be written specific for each use. maybe this type of manual exists already, using autocad for each specific use, but i haven't found it yet. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Cost Efficient, Methodical
Just as any study text should be, this book is plodding in its presentation. As an engineer familiar with AutoCAD 11 but very rusty indeed, this manual was a relief. I easily mastered all of its concepts and even managed to figure it out ahead of the author's demonstration. For its price, this is the place to go for any beginner or, like me, an old dog learning, or in my case, re-learning old tricks. The book starts out slow with basic line commands and builds slowly. It was difficult sometimes, and I sometimes referred to a second book as a reference; this is usually a good idea unless you are a masochist -- buy a second highly recommended book. Later, the manual goes into more sophisticated drawings. It has not been effortless but the author should be commended for achieving his goal of making learning AutoCAD as painless as possible. And, the price is reasonable. In 2002, I took an AutoCAD LT class. It was far more difficult and less comprehensible than this manual. It seems to me, that a company could save money by using this text instead and allowing self-paced training.
5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for beginners
Simple, step by step instructions make this book a very smart choice for beginners. I am a student and purchased this book for school. AutoCAD does take patience to learn. This book walks you step-by-step through the process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for Microstation beginner
This book explains every commands in Microstation, has pictures of every dialog boxes there are and the exercises inside the CD will take you step by step through everything cover in the chapter.A very good book to learn at home by yourself.Recommend for AutoCAD or beginning user.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped me go from AutoCAD to Microstation
I am fairly familiar with AutoCAD but was pretty lost when it came to Microstation.I found this book very helpful to get me up to speed in Mictrostation. With the background I had in AutoCAD I quickly got through most of this book.I spent about 3 days in the book and feel pretty comfortable with the nuts and bolts of Microstation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Preferable to _Inside MicroStation_

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow !
Informal is an extraordinary work. I guess the reason why it's so shocking is that the content of the book is not like those static structural forms or solutions that we see in structural class. The case studies that Balmond brings to the table are very recent and genuine by star architects. I guess I was shocked by the fact that all these architects are not structurally oriented architects such as Foster/ Piano/ Calatrava/ Hopkins. Rather, they are theoretically approaching architects such as Koolhaas/ Liebskind; or, tectonically approaching architects such as Siza. I never thought projects by them had anything to do with structural or mathmatical innovation. Reading Informal, one can easily detect where the originality lie in each project. Sometimes it's in the irregularity of geometry or sometimes it's in mathmatical mystery. Balmond contends that they are all in mother nature. Unlike a formal structural engineering (e.g. Peter Rice) Balmond's originality comes from the informal networks. In High-tech, the ingenuity of structural entity was condensed into joinery. Informal networks is much more diverse and complex than that. It is against the conventional formal structural idea of hierarchy/center/symmetry. Balmond argues, formal approach is defining a problem in a "fixed" or "contained" manner; hence, leading to a same old idea of solution/ detailing. In Informal, Balmond redefines it in a more active/dynamic geometry, to bring about unexpected realities. Sometimes through structural innovation and sometimes through special surface treatment, Balmond promoted and realized the ideas of star architects. Overall, he has freed architecture from the "Cartesian Cage".

It was quite interesting to get a look at the somewhat unusual engineering process of Cecil Balmond.5-0 out of 5 stars Balmond Student
Cecil Balmond is passionate and inspirational. 5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to learn Rhino ....
This book provides plenty of examples, grouped in a context in which they will be used. Some Nurbs, modeling theory and troubleshooting tips. Enough to answer questions as you go through the text but not so much as to be overwhelming.
1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
Do not buy this book. Instead buy the online Rhino video tips from Mcneel. I bought this book expecting to learn something only to discover that the stuff I learned was useless.1-0 out of 5 stars Save your time and money
Numerous omissions and typos made for a very frustrating read.Mislabeled drawings and missing or erroneous instructions made exercises difficult to follow. Fundamental exercises were superficial and fragmented without logical development or context making retention difficult.Rhino's supplied Level 1 and Level 2 Training Materials are far superior in all regards. 2-0 out of 5 stars Harnessing AutoCad LDD
I did not care for the book. I did not feel it was written very well. It does not "read" well and is difficult to understand and follow the examples. I suppose, it is better than nothing and I keep it around as a reference only. Also, hardly and time is spent on the survey module only 1 example is given on runnning traverses.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fully Comprehensive and an excellent reference.
I have more than five years using third party Acad applications for land development and I found this material systematic, well organized and easy to follow. The examples provided ( CD included) are sequential to the lectures which makes it an excellent didactic tool.On the other hand, the text does not cover the possible, or most common, types of reports that can be generated with the program in its differents applications.3-0 out of 5 stars Harnessing Autodesk LDDT2i
The overall organization is quite good..., however, if you have been using LDD for a while and have accessed the online help to learn the program, you may find much similarity in syntax. If you are new to using LDD, then it is worth the price of the book. Keep in mind though, if you need to pick up the overall working mechanism of this LDD software and civil design in general in a rather short period of time, you best bet may be going to an authorized learning center.(No, I don't work for anyone of them.) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Choice
I am a Vocational Professor at Amarillo College in the Computer Assisted Design department.I have used different editions of this text for years to teach the MicroStation courses in our department. He covers basics thoroughly and provides excellent exercises using practical working drawings. My advanced course includes customization and 3D topics, all of which are included in this text.I recommend it highly.

3-0 out of 5 stars Harnessing MicroStation/J(tm)
Harnessing MicroStation/J is an adequate learning tool for beginners, but suffers from a lack of advanced topics.Several high level features are not even mentioned, ie. b-spline curves and surfaces and plot tables.Theindex is very weak. The few entries that are there, use obscure programnames for features, instead of common subject names.Read more

This is an in depth tutorial and reference book, masterfully written and made accessible for whoever is looking for the serious knowledge, the part dealing with geometric tolerances is particularly impressive, the author did his best to nail down this elusive and often skipped subject.
