A must have for anyone using the Basic Stamps!

Good, but you have to work
I view this book as a good bridge between theory an application of Linear Robust control design.I see the authors as intentionally staying away from the bowels of the theory so as to not bog down the engineer who is looking to apply the techniques covered.Sometimes the depth of the theory involved dissuades the engineer from applying this powerful tool.
Great Disappointment
This book tries to advertise using the latest Robust Control Toolbox version 3.0. But failed to mention any of the new tools that were developed in version 3.0, such as uncertainty modeling(ureal.m,..), new model reduction tools (reduce.m,..), new loopshaping tools (loopsyn.m,..). The book tries to balance the theory and applications. But failed to illustrate either of them. The theory portion (Part I) has no examples. Actually, it tries to fool the consumers that this is a modern, up-to-date book, but in fact it's not. It only uses the old verion 2 tools. It just dropped a few theories from nowhere with minimum explanation. The references for the theory/algorithms are incomplete. For example the reference for BST model reduction method coded in the toolbox is missing. It also missed the essense of how and why we use Robust Control Theory, the spirit of using H-infinity as a MIMO loopshaping tool and mu-analysis as a multivariable robustness analysis tool. Part II design examples are not challenging enough. They are all easy to solve textbook problems. It did not point out the limitations and solutions of using the tools as an honest and knowledgeableauthor should do. The Robust Control Toolbox on-line demos even have more interesting and useful industrial design examples. For example, in the book, the spring-mass-damper problem was overly simplifed by attaching one end to the wall (no rigid-body dynamics considered). The hard disk drive problem has no flexible dynamics! It missed the essense of the non-colocated actuator/sensor design problem. The mu-analysis example did not illustrate how to pull out uncertainties from State-Space setup, which is the case for most control system design plants. It also failed to mention why we go from singular values to its lower bound (mu) in the theory part I of the book. It also failed to mention the role and importance of the mu-synthesis technique, and so on and so forth. The book material is too sloppily put together in a short time and out-of-date for a beginner who tries to learn the theory and the new version 3.0 Robust Control Toolbox tools (actually none of the new tools was introduced). It's too simple for an experience robust control designer who tries to advance himself for more chalenging design problems.The new Robust Control Toolbox manual has a lot more information on "Getting Start" and "New Version 3 Tools". You proably don't need to but this book
I am new to the PICAXE so I was looking for all the information I could find. The [...] website has quite a bit but I felt like I needed more. I saw the book advertised with glowing reviews and ordered a copy at once. When the book came, I had gotten pretty familiar with the information on the web site and was looking for something more in depth. After looking at the book for quite some time, I still haven't found anything of use that can't be gotten from the web site. Actually, whenever I need information, I go to the web site instead of loking at the book. The picaxe user forum is also helpful. There may soon be other books on the PICAXE and I hope the authors do a better job than was done here.

From beginners to pro ? !!!!
I'm not a beginner, I'm not a pro.. I bought this book based on other peoples views, within an online technical forum. They have more experience than me. I have bought many books with an expectation that it was going to be tailor made for me.. i got it wrong often. This will be a great reference book when i get on further on in my studies of microcontrollers and the author clearly knows what he's talking about... but i don't. I got to page 22 and had to go back. I thought it was a bit heavy going. Now i know questions may be raised as to my ability to grasp some concepts, but, as a teacher in a particular subject, i beleive that in any subject that includes a great deal of practical work, you must take baby steps. The author gave examples of each part of the text he was explaining, but it was just more words to get into your head. You know when you read something technical - then you pause for a few seconds and try to digest it...The people who would be interested in this book would probably have some of the hardware already in their possesion and up and running, or at least some experience, to a degree and, as i said earlier, this book will be a great reference manual, but for me, i would have prefferd, "go to your text editor and type in this code" to see what actually happens, right from the start. To sumarise, this is a very good book to take you as far as you would like to go with this type of microcontroller, and the price ( particularly from Amazon, (UK) �8.00GBP less than downtown ) is just fantastic for something that you will use for a long time to come. This review may sound contradictory, but i have never written a review before so, [David Lincoln] dont be too harsh on me !! I look forward to any other comments on my review, or any other reviews.

Picaxe
As a fan of David's earlier Picaxe booklets, I see his new book as being a great aid when wrestling with applications for these dirt cheap microcontroller darlings. The book works at many levels, since with beginner, intermediate, & experienced sections it should appeal to schools as well as being a good reference for old hands, hobbyists and -gasp- even engineers.

About the latest edition
This is an excellent Manual for those working in the real world as PC techs. I would caution as I dont fell it may be for beginners. I think you should have a solid foundation in PC basics like I/O, Busses, DMA etc before coming to this. Some diagrams are not as descriptive as the could be. I guess I am spoiled with the diagrams in the Micheal Meyers series. However, I feel this is an intermediate book and a great reference for down road.It has been very helpful to me in studying for the exams in certain areas. There are only a few criticisms I have: No voltages on the CPU Reference charts. Also, I had hard time finding a few things like how many devices on Firewire chain and a few others critical things on the list of Objectives. I do believe it is all there but it seems like the author go's into to much time in giving overviews of the various new technologies. Things I feel you should already have a firm grasp of. Dont get me wrong this is huge manual and is packed with useful information. Many applications are covered and the OS coverage is outstanding. All in all its a great Reference.
