A Fluid Book
Professor Frank M. White is one of the few double professors who is also an effective author and proficient teacher. As an undergrad I took an introductory fluids course taught by the author at the University of Rhode Island, and I found him to be an extraordinary teacher who could explain complex topics in a straightforward, unassuming manner. The same style of teaching is carried over to his written works, this book in particular.
Good seller
I bought a textbook from this seller. It came rather quickly and in great condition.

Cumbersome to Use
I used this book for my second course in fluid mechanics, and I thought it was terrible. THe chapters are not organized very well, the example problems aren't presented effectively, and this problems at the ned of the chapter are not well written, as well as this book contains many errors. I don't reccommend this text to other students; I would use Munson&Okishi 's text for undergrads. ... Read more

Book content value
This volume contains the most comprehensive list of mechanicalcomponents and variations on any given theme that I've seen in one place.Additionally there are significant extensions to computation methods and overviews not found elsewhere.It is an extremely high value book.

Absolute Must
The last few favourable reviews cover my thoughts well, but I would like to add that this large volume far exceeded my expectations in terms of both depth of content and quality. This is an amazing value for anyone who works with mechanical components. While its focus is on illustrations of the components themselves, it also includes detailed explanations with graphs, formulae, etc. So it's also a how-to book of sorts. I also purchased a companion volume "Mechanisms and Mechanical Devices Sourcebook", which I also highly recommend.

A terrific book
Illustrated Sourcebook of Mechanical Components has lots and lots and lots of line drawings of machinery components.The drawings are clear and simple.Each is accompanied by a well written description, usually a few lines but longer if needed.An interesting book for anyone mechanically inclined.For engineers there are tables and formulas where needed.A great book. ... Good Book-Keep These Things Mind
This book is great, whether your a beginner or an expert just wanting to go back to your roots. Every part is described and you have websites that you can order them from. It's all very good. But there are just some things to keep in mind. First of all, there's a section on motors where he describes them and what they're used for. I assumed that we needed to buy them, so I bought the 5 pack that he mentions. Now on the next chapter afterwards, it turns out that we dont need those motors, but we need gearhead motors. So to me I was a little bummed because the motors he describes are basically for you to test and have fun with. It wasn't expensive but I was a little misguided and didnt like the shipping expense I made on motors I wasn't even going to apply to the robot. This brings me up to my next point: BUY ALL THE PARTS YOU NEED IN ONE ORDER. I had the idea of slowly ordering my parts as I read the book but the problem is that places like Digi-Key charge you a ridiculous amount for shipping, and when you need only 3 resistors and the shipping is about 10-20 times its cost, it gets a little annoying. So I would suggest just skimming the whole book to see what parts you will need and then getting them all together. This will also save you time as you go through the book since you will have all the parts that you need.
This book is exactly as described in the title.
This book is perfect for a begginer or someone with a little experience. I ordered it because I had some knowldge about electronics but none related to robots. It fills in everybit of knowldge you could want, giving you the tools you need to actually accomplish something. After reading you have everything you need to build the robot in the book or something completely different and more to your liking.

Amazing Find for Teaching Kids Electronics and Robotics
I have bought other robot building books in the past for my teenage son, yet I quickly got lost in each of them. Not sure how much he retained. Then I found this book. It's wonderful!

Excellent Reference Book
I have many years of architectural drafting experience. Although this book says "Basic Skills" on the cover, it is much more than basic. It's an excellent reference book, covering everything that is needed for interior design drafting: from line weights to scale, dimensioning, plans, elevations, sections, checklists, furniture and finish schedules, contract documents, and the list goes on. A classic text in a new edition.
Having worn out my original copy, purchased almost 40 year ago,
This book is no joke
If you want to know transport well, this is the best book out for anyone.These guys weren't playing games when the they wrote this book.This book is serious, but don't use it as your introductory transport book beacues it is too advanced to start with, due to the fact that it is a graduate text.Once you have a grasp for the subject then you definitely need to check it out.Look in any other book and they will have it as a reference.I dont't know why these guys don't write more books.

Good, but not great
First let me stress, this subject is hard, very hard.This may very well be the toughest subject you take in college.Regarding the book, it has some very strong points, and some very week points.

Good reference but dated
Not a bad reference for most users. It is a little basic and some of the info is dated. It's a little weak in more advanced areas like indiredt addressing, use and construction of subroutines, but otherwise this is a good book to keep in a general library for technicians responsible for supporting PLC based systems.

Great for AB users
I have used this text in our PLC class for three years. I really like that it is specific to Allan Bradley products. The workbook that goes with this text has programming assignments to reinforce the concepts.As I train on AB SLC500s exclusively, it is almost ideal. I say almost becaue there are many references to obsolete instructions used with a PLC no longer manufactured. It is due for a new edition. But until then, it remains a very good text to teach from, or if you simply want to know more about the subject.

Engineering and Design for today's ANSI/ASME/ISO standards
This book describes it all, gives the rules of the road for the changes that have occured in the last number of years in ANSI callouts, Geometric Tolerancing, ASME, and ISO practices.I've been in this business since '76 on the drafting board, and since '86 with CADD (Computer Aided Drafting & Design) and have watched the skills of knowing how to draft (a distinct language of its own) and the elements of design and engineering fall by the wayside in general as the focus now by our educators and companies is more about learning to and running a CADD program, making a picture than following the skills and practices of drafting, design, and engineering.Students today need to get back to "walking" (learning drafting) before they "run" with a CADD program.This book addresses what is necessary to create drawings and design the parts as they should be.I highly recommend it to anyone conscientiously wanting to really learn to do the job right and/or to hone their skills.

Exhaustive theory, but inaccurate exercises
As an all-inclusive reference on Drafting theory and practice, this is as good a book as any. However: Having used it as a teaching text, I found an inexcusable number of mistakes in the end-of-chapter exercises. The dimensions simply don't stack up! My advice: Go over them yourself first, time permitting, before assigning them to your classes. Perhaps (hopefully) this has been/will be corrected in later editions. Also: Board drafting is a dying art. Thus, while opening chapters on theory and sketching methods should be retained, more emphasis must now be placed on CAD (not "CADD"); specifically, 3D CAD and downstream processes. ... Read more

A good book for mechanical engineering, I recomnend it to my students
This book covers most of the fundamental topics in fracture mechanics. I recommend it to my undergraduate students. It is very easy to understand. This book is a fundamental source in fracture mechanics. It is a classic book recommended by numerous bibliographies regarding this field of study.

Broad overview with not much rigor
This book covers most of the fundamental topics in fracture mechanics.However, it lacks derivations of the equations, and the illustrations are a very crude.This book is probably appropriate for undergraduate level work, but not for graduate level.

The true value of this book . . .
I can only speculate that this book is, as was one of the previous editions I've read, used and loved, is bound to provide an exceptional foundational education in the skill of technical (engineering design) drawing/drafting for those with the natural aptitude for freehand drawing. Readers will indeed learn about and develop precision drawing skills--whether drawing with instruments or computer.
Profoundly Frustrating
As a freshman engineering major, I have been compelled to use Technical Drawing for a graphics course.This has been a profoundly frustrating experience.It seems that the authors, in their zeal to attain unto the dry, lifeless style characteristic of most professional engineering publications, also unintentionally created a text which is superlatively unclear.

Not worth it.
I took my undergrad fluid mechanics course using Crowe's lightweight doorstop. I took the course from Dr. Crowe himself. He certainly knows his fluid mechanics but if you go by his course and this book then he does not seem the least bit interested in handing down his knowledge to his students. At the time, about 2 years ago I gave this a 3/5 rating based upon my own naive assumption that I had a solid undergraduate background in fluid mechanics thanks to diligently studying and reading everything in this text. But it really took a graduate level fluids course to make me realize the serious deficiencies in this textbook. Save your hard earned money this book deserves zero stars and here's why:
Okay reference book
This text was used in a class where I was the teaching assistant.There were numerous complaints from students about how the text was difficult to follow, and in some cases the examples were even incomplete.This was a class for junior engineering students as a first thorough course in fluids, the text was not helpful.As a graduate student I found it to be a good reference of basic concepts (although, it was hard for me to follow some of the examples).It even goes in depth with many concepts.All in all it is a good basic reference, but totally inadequate for beginning instruction.
Undergrad Masterpiece

makes autocad easy to learn
what i like about this book, over the books that come from autodesk, the makers of autocad, is that it's trimmed down. it isn't filled with lots of extra stuff you will never use. this book is simple and straight forward, which is what you need when you're using a monster of a program like autocad. the reason for the monster, is so anyone, with varied applications, can use this program. ideally, the program be would customized per use; eg there could be autocad for drawing small mechanical parts, one for designing hvac systems, one for architecture (this finally exists in the form of autocad architectual desktop), one for circuit design, etc. with specialized versions of autocad, a manual could be written specific for each use. maybe this type of manual exists already, using autocad for each specific use, but i haven't found it yet. Just as any study text should be, this book is plodding in its presentation. As an engineer familiar with AutoCAD 11 but very rusty indeed, this manual was a relief. I easily mastered all of its concepts and even managed to figure it out ahead of the author's demonstration. For its price, this is the place to go for any beginner or, like me, an old dog learning, or in my case, re-learning old tricks. The book starts out slow with basic line commands and builds slowly. It was difficult sometimes, and I sometimes referred to a second book as a reference; this is usually a good idea unless you are a masochist -- buy a second highly recommended book. Later, the manual goes into more sophisticated drawings. It has not been effortless but the author should be commended for achieving his goal of making learning AutoCAD as painless as possible. And, the price is reasonable. In 2002, I took an AutoCAD LT class. It was far more difficult and less comprehensible than this manual. It seems to me, that a company could save money by using this text instead and allowing self-paced training.
Recommended for beginners
Simple, step by step instructions make this book a very smart choice for beginners. I am a student and purchased this book for school. AutoCAD does take patience to learn. This book walks you step-by-step through the process.

Excellent book for Microstation beginner
This book explains every commands in Microstation, has pictures of every dialog boxes there are and the exercises inside the CD will take you step by step through everything cover in the chapter.A very good book to learn at home by yourself.Recommend for AutoCAD or beginning user.

Helped me go from AutoCAD to Microstation
I am fairly familiar with AutoCAD but was pretty lost when it came to Microstation.I found this book very helpful to get me up to speed in Mictrostation.With the background I had in AutoCAD I quickly got through most of this book.I spent about 3 days in the book and feel pretty comfortable with the nuts and bolts of Microstation.

Preferable to _Inside MicroStation_
Looking to train our user base as part of our V8 migration, we conducted a quick study of the available published books on V8. Bentley's own supplied course material are fine as workbooks, but not much use otherwise and no doubt are gathering dust on many shelves the world over.Read more

The most practical book I have ever read
The tips and guidelines of this book helped me not only to build a maintenance management system [aluminum rolling mills] from scratch but also to create a CMMS program(database) from where I could print many reports as well as work orders. Athough I have read many many books on maintenance and reliability topics, this particular book helped me to understand and apply the proposed theories focusing on details.

Doc the Guru, its not AMPSB
This is not AMPSB (another maintenace planning and scheduling book), when you read this book you can actually feel that you are in the real working world.Doc does not talk concepts he tells what happens in real Maintenance World and how to go to World Class Maintenance Management practices using 6 planning and 6 scheduling principals. I like the way Doc takes a reader through planning and scheduling of maintenance work by examples which makes this book different from other books, you cant find other texts doing this unless you are in the classroom. The Appendix about Work Order System is a million bonus for those who want to develop their SoP (Standart Operation Procedure). I will stick to this book as a reference in the process of developing a World-Class Maintenance Organization.I will also recommend this book to Maintenance Project Managers and Maintenance Management Consultants of any system (take it from me I am in aviation and I am applying his concepts). If you want to start or improve your Maintenance Planning Department START BY READING THIS BOOK.Good job Doc. Ideal for all Maintenance Program Designers
Doc Palmer has provided a great tool for all Maintenance Program Designers and others to use. Mr. Palmer has provided good details and examples in the book while also making it as enjoyable to read as it is informative. I highly recommend this book to all who are step one and beyond in Maintenance Management and Development. One of the hardest espects of starting a new maintenance program for a company is often getting management to except the required changes. The Maintenance Planning and Scheduling Handbook helps by often having a ready example or referance to provide a second means to demonstrate to the client the how, why and effect on his bottom line. This reason alone is worth the cost of this book and then some.Read more

I would recommend foundations of mechanics by Marsden
I have to admit that I haven't thoroughly read through this text. But judging from the first 10 pages, there is a lot of mathematical handwaving. In contrast, foundations of mechanics (hereafter FOM) is far superior in that it provides all the necessary background beyond calculus and linear algebra to the reader, and is logically consistent so far in my reading. I want to mention that there are certainly complete and excellent texts out there on functional analysis, differential geometry, and topology, but many texts include way more stuff than you would want to know. In particular, it is my humble opinion that once you get to a certain point of knowledgeability of a subject like algebraic topology, you have enough of a taste for it that to learn more of the subject would only help if you were to go into research. Therefore a book like FOM provides a concise and practical treatment of those various advanced mathematics topics.

Best book on CM
Best book on CM (based most on symplectic formulation). Extremely clear if one has enough patience to follow exactly the author's way and to work out the proposed stimulating problems. Contains an original way of introducing differential forms, integration of differential forms and homology/De Rahm's thm.: you fully get in the subject in few pages ! The first part does not make use of symplectic formalism but is also quite original and stimulating. The level is last yr. undergr. 1st yr. graduate. Very useful if used with E. ott (Chaos in Dynamical Systems) for studying nonlinear dynamics.

Encyclopedic
Extremely stimulating, uses Galileo to motivate Newton's laws instead of postulating them. Treatment of Bertrand's theorem is beautiful, but contains one error (took me 2 years before I realized where..). However, I know of only one physicist who successully worked out all the missing steps and taught from this book. I know mathematicians who have cursed it. I used/use it for inspiration. The treatment of Liouville's integrability theorem, I found too abstract, found the old version in Whittaker's Analytical Dynamics to be clearer (Arnol'd might laugh sarcastically at this claim!)--for an interesting variation, but more from the standpoint of continuous groups, see the treatment in ch. 16 of my Classical Mechanics (Cambridge, 1997). In my text I do not restrict the discussion of integrability/nonintegrability to Hamiltonian systems but include driven dissipative systems as well. Another strength of Arnol'd: his discussion of caustics, useful for the study of galaxy formation (as I later learned while doing work in cosmology). Also, I learned from Arnol'd that Poisson brackets are not restricted to canonical systems (see also my ch. 15). I guess that every researcher in nonlinear dynamics should study Arnol'd's books, he's the 'alte Hasse' in the field. ... Read more

Simplifying nuclear physics and engineering
This book is pure fun to read... easy to follow, clearly written, and full of cool graphs. It invokes the engineer, physicist, and statistician in you all at once. If for nothing else but having fun, you should get a copy and read it.

Not a very useful book
This book tries to cover so many subjects that it covers none of them well. Most chapters are full of generalities rather than the details needed by a practicing engineer or student. The worst feature of the handbook isthe index, which contains so few entries that it is very difficult to findinformation on a topic or determine if the book even mentions it, whichoften it doesn't. Rather than buy this expensive handbook, I would suggestinvesting in standard references for the individual topics (e.g. wastewatertreatment, solids waste) in which you are interested. ... Read more

well organised and illustrated.Lacking in metric info.
I find this book clear and easy to read on machiningtopics. The photographs and illustrations fit well with the text. Generally a worthwhile beginners tointermediate book for pre apprentice to 3rd year. However in future editions I would like to see ISO metric information on topics such as threads and tapers along with limits and fits. Still Waiting
I ordered this book about 2mths ago and still havenot recieved the book.

I have never seen a textbook with such a sparse amount of explanation.Some of the sections are litterally a couple paragraphs, and they repeat themselves constantly.But they do a good amount of examples and have put a lot of effort into their illustrations.So, meh.

a Lean approach to machinery maintenance processes
Provides the insight that as an organization leans its manufacturing processes, it must also address machinery maintenance processes or reliability suffers. It gives a good background on Lean Manufacturing and rationale for using a lean approach on maintenance processes, along with an excellent "how to" guide for implementing.

A Great "How To" Text
The book provided an interesting background and history. Once it got into the actual elements of Lean Maintenenance, the text was very comprehensive. It provided a step-by-step process for setting up a lean maintenance program -- a cook-book approach. Missed the Lean point
