The Perfect Reference
I am a plant metallurgist for a company and I constantly use this book to look at properties for various materials.The book is relatively small (unlike ASM books) and contains loads of hard to find information.

More useful data than a dozen handbooks
Smith's book is excellent for two reasons: Highly recommended

ok, not great
Used this book for a graduate level class on mechanics of materials.I found that it was ok, but very concise and hard to understand at times.I was usually able to figure out solutions to the problems from reading the chapters but I really had to dig. Definatly could have been better written but a good professor will make up for the deficiencies of the text.

Very reader un-friendly
This book is perhaps the only text book in the market which deals with this particular subject. This is perhaps the only reason why the book is still being sold. The book is very difficult to understand. The language is often cryptic and the most critical mathematical steps are ommitted during derivations which makes this book practically useless. However, if you are already familiar with the principles of Advanced Solid Mechanics, you may find this book relatively useful. Until someone writes a better book, I guess we are stuck with this.

Skips too many steps
As a university professor, I chose this book for a graduate course because it seemed to cover the same topics that I wanted to cover.Read more

Not for me
A mass of facts and data hardly comprehensible with bad explanations and exampes, in my view.

A fast track DOE (Design of Experiments) course:
If the Experiment you are dealing with requires a statistical design and you're a novice to DOE, this would be an ideal book. The book explains the basic concepts of statistics with easily comprehendible examples. The chapters on factorial design are well organized and explained with hypothetical data. After reading this book you'll have a better understanding of factorial design jargons: confounding, interaction, linearity, factors, levels etc... This not a bulky book and you can finish reading it in one week.

Practical guide to a complex subject
This book provides a simple, practical, easy to understand approach to a potentially confusing subject. It quickly brings the reader to the point where they are able to design and run basic designed experiments. Once again - Bill provides us great humor
I agree with Julian, while this particular book may be a bit more technical than his others, it is certainly worth the money and belongs on every Bryson fan's shelf.The insights into metal are as plentiful as the humor - especially when the author dives into the always hilarious topics of carburization and TTT diagrams.Side splitting!I never knew that working with metals could be so entertaining but I guess I should expect that from Bryson.He can make any topic a joy. A waste of time for metallurgical information
I am always surprized at the lack of information about the metal heat treating field.This book is definitely included in this.Although many of the processing techniques are good, some make me cringe and want to run for cover.The metallurgical information is remaniscent of Biringuccio or Agricola, both written in the 1500's.If you have enough metallurgical knowledge to know what is correct and what processing techniques are good, then you don't need this book.If you don't have enough knowledge to decipher this, then it is unreliable.On a lighter note, the other sections, not dealing with heat treating, seem good.

Best place to start for polymers
An excellent and a must read for anyone with an interest in polymeric materials. It easily is the best introductory book on the subject and I'd recommend it to all students - believe it - i've been taught by the authors! I only wish they'd also write on more specialized topics in Polymer Science.

THE introductory text for polymers
This is a lovely introductory text for polymer science, hitting on all the major concepts of characterization, structure, mechanical properties, and synthesis. Topics are covered very concisely, but with sufficient detail to be useful in several different graduate level courses on polymers. Great background for understanding Flory-Huggins theory, chain dimensions. And an excellent price as well! Just my opinions as a grad student in some polymers courses...
