highly recommend it
Okay we followed this book for our lecture in thin films given by the first author of the book LB Freund, one of the best instructors i ever had. i will try not to be biased by his teaching skills while writing this review. i would say that its a must reference who are working in thin film area be it experimental or modeling. but i believe that you need to have a sound background atleast in continuum mechanics and elasticity to fully follow the mechanics (of deformation) part of the thin film on your own. the best thing i liked about this book is its methodical structure for e.g. deriving the basic Stoney's relation by minimizing the energy, then talk about its assumption in detail and then removing those assumptions one by one to make the relation more realistic (and offcourse more complicated). there are other things like material properties of common thin film materials used in microelectronics, topics on surface morphology etc. his writing style is very clear... again not for someone who doesnt have necessary background.

Has some good info, but unorganized
The book is somewhat helpful, but if you don't remember exactly where something is, the index will pretty much be useless. The book is also kind of hard to read/follow... I definitely wouldn't recommend this book unless you absolutely have to buy it for a class.

Help for the uninitiated
I have been using this book for my research for the past year.Over all the this design guide by Ashby is excellent.It is well written for those who do not have any background in design using metal and polymer foams.The chapters are short and concise.If, after reading this book, you want to dig deeper in the world of foam, then read Cellular Solids by Lorna Gibson.

Mediocraty at it's finest
The book isn't overall bad, but the explanations assume a strong comprehension of the subject. As for statics and mechanics, it is merely a few select cases, and fails to actually help.Several vital steps are omitted outright, so you'd be better off skipping this book, and searching for a question and answer bank. ... Not very practial
I'm a bit dissapointed with this book. It basically consist out of two parts, one explaining what molding/extrusion is, the other giving a (very) high level overview of SPC. I would have hoped to see how SPC can applied/implemented IN an injection molding environment, however it's just not there.
Process Control and SPC
In preface of the book the author states that people who does not know about process controls teach most SPC courses. I say Amen! And also it should be added that it is difficult to contain SPC and Process knowledge of an important process like extrusion together in 230 pages and most.If you are new to extrusion there is enough basic information in the first half of the book. If you are already in Process Controls don't waste your time reading. Page 130 starts with basic statistical information; definitions, control charts, then Process capability and some basic DOE and nothing about modern techniques. Even though the title of book explains SPC as Statistical Process Control, there are not much about control theories and practical controls applications. After reading this book I would say SPC is for Statistical Process Charting.There are some formulas and references to SPC software packages with no value. I am a grateful reader who used Dr. Rauwendaal's first book on SPC tosolve real world extrusion problems.His second book, SPC in InjectionMolding and Extrusion is even better and covers injection molding too.Ina nutshell, this book gives the interested reader, technical or not,management or in the trenches, everything he or she needs to successfullyunderstand and apply SPC in extrusion and injection molding manufacturingoperations.That's a big statement, but I can back it up with thisstory.Read more

Terrific study of the history of cochineal trafficking
This book is one of the very best I have seen in a long time. The author has taken great care to present historically correct and detailed information about the long history of cochineal farming, and sale of this commodity (dried beetles that can be processed to create a brilliant hue of red).

The book was very well laid out and easy to understand ex.
The book was very helpful on grasping the understandig of strenght of materials,but if had the option of having a solutions manual to know whether I had worked the problems out corretly I would have capitalized on it.
