5-0 out of 5 stars Only textbook I've read completely twice
I used this textbook (taught by the author) as an undergraduate, and again as a clarifier in graduate school. Not only is Dr. DeHoff's book clear and logical, it dovetails nicely with the highly regarded, and more advanced, materials thermodynamics textbook by Claude Lupis.Perhaps this is because both professors spent time at Carnagie Mellon University.5-0 out of 5 stars Great introductory textbook
This is a wonderful, well-written text in thermodynamics for undergraduates and graduate students as well. The unique feature of this book is the logical approach utilized for handling equilibrium in systems of varying complexity, which I believe is superior to many of the conventional approaches. Also unique is the procedure developed by the author for deriving relations between state variables. The problem sets are quite useful and should be very helpful in understanding the subject.A solution manual I believe is also available to instructors. What this book lacks for an advanced graduate student in this field, is a comprehensive treatment of solution models and more practical applications using many of the excellent thermodynamic software and databases currently available. I would hope with enough encouragement by readers (and publisher) that these topics will be included in a future, perhaps thicker edition. Many of the non-traditional topics in thermodynamics such as defect chemistry, capillarity, electrochemistry or external fields are also introduced in the text and can be quite useful too.5-0 out of 5 stars Best undergrad thermo text for materials science
I have been using this text for a solid state thermodynamics class I am teaching. The manner in which it is organized and structured allows one to sequentially build understanding of the complicated concepts of thermodynamics one layer at a time. For example, from the table of contents one can see a progression from the concepts of thermodynamic equilibrium to one component, multiphase systems, to multicomponent, single phase systems, then to multicomponent, multiphase systems, etc. Each chapter builds upon those that preceded it, and then becomes part of the foundation for those that follow. This organization makes it much easier for the instructor to teach this difficult subject, and I think easier for the student to comprehend it. My only objection is how phase diagrams are introduced in chapters 9 and 10. I think the presentation of the "structure of phase diagrams" in chapter 9 is confusing without the material in the first section of chapter 10. All, in all, I think this is the best undergrad text for thermo in materials science. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is the book i learned patternmaking from... its a wonderful guide and teaches you how to really learn the basics of flat patternmaking but gives you the information to take your pattern skills much further! I have looked at other books for flat pattern making and this one is the best, and has detailed illustrations that are helpful as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
I went back and forth on this one.Bought it to learn how to make a Flat Pattern.Half of this book is on construction of each basic pattern (blouse, skirt, pants etc) with minimal variations.Lots of large drawings, very little text. Not for the person who already knows construction techniques. If I were a beginner in sewing I would need more information on construction than this gives. But good instruction on Flat Pattern making if you want to not use half of the book....

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book ever written about pattern-making!
If you read only one book about pattern-making, make this the one! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great technical depth and detail, yet very easy and simple t
This was the recommended textbook for my undergraduate program in civil engineering in Pakistan for the course titled, guess what "Properties of Concrete".I am now a practising water and wastewater engineer, and my main focus is not concrete. However, I have very good memories ofthe ease with which I could follow the text even at the undergraduatelevel, and also how the book was comprehensive enough to give almost allthe answers as far as I was concerned.Excellent book, and very wellwritten.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books for me.

This book comprises a compendium of monographs on all aspects of coatings technology. Its coverage is admirably broad, and its hefty presence on your bookshelf is sure to impress visitors.Unfortunately, that's where this book will stay, because its information content isn't worth the poor trees that were sacrificed on its behalf. 5-0 out of 5 stars coating

5-0 out of 5 stars finishes the story of 1939
This book is a tour de force narrative of the modern world, using, of all things, fashion as the yardstick.Dr. Handley has shown with firm authority the relevance of fashion to everyday living using copious, well-chosen examples from haute couture, pop, and ready-to-wear markets to elucidate the link between these markets and the amazing marketing and technical campaigns of du Pont and Imperial Chemical Industries. The role of plastics in today's world starts with nylon, and the introduction of synthetic fibers. This story is seldom told, and by being sympathetic to all participants in this saga, Handley weaves an excellent story. The chemical details are weak, but everything else in this book is great.

5-0 out of 5 stars !
This is an incredibly well-researched, well-written, and interesting book on an obscure topic. The photographs included are amusing and helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabric Into Fashion
Which do you prefer, synthetic or natural? The answer is obvious to everyone, but on closer examination, the question becomes cloudy.Take fibers, for instance. There has been a boom in cotton and even hempclothing because it is "natural," but then one has to consider theartificial fertilizers used and all the insecticides poured on the land tomake the plants to make the textile."Polyester" is something of a badword to many people, as it is a synthetic, but it comes from petroleumderivatives, remnants of plants that are millions of years old rather thangrown last season.Ever since artificial fibers were invented, there hasbeen a see-saw of taste for them and against, for sensible reasons and forirrational ones. The history of this see-saw forms much of the story in_Nylon: The Story of a Fashion Revolution_ by Susannah Handley.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy intro to polymers
This textbook provides a good introduction to polymers, their processing, applications, and properties. The book assumes minimal prior knowledge of polymers, and begins with a simple intro to properties such as glass transition temperature, molecular weight, thermoplastic versus thermoset.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fundamental Concepts in the Design of Experiments
This book is very valuable for those actively engaged in the conduct ofexperiments, either operational or developmental in nature. It doesrequire someone with a background in statistical methods using analysis ofvariance. The user needs to have a good understanding of statisticalinference. There are many good working models of various analyticprocedures provided.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, if you already know theoretical statistics
This book is written for people who already know the theory of statistics and want to do statistic consulting. 1-0 out of 5 stars Statistics by example only - very little theory/concepts
After using this book for a class, we all agreed that this book was not the best for those of us who are just learning the concepts in analyzing variance. The author tends to assume the basics are "hard-coded"into the students head.Fair enough. His next step, however, is not todiscuss the theory/concept.Rather, it is to give an example of what he istalking about, hoping you will grasp the concept. It would very helpful tohave the concepts explained and then the examples given. In addition, thenotation (subscripts) are not always explained, nor are the formulasobvious/straightforward.Finally, the book has editing problems.Read more
